Wow, how's that even possible? (After all, this *is* an autoscroller. The only place where you can improve is in boss fights, and I don't believe all the boss fights combined take even 1 minute. Maybe lag reduction?)
Bingo. See the great WIPs Cpadolf has in the Gradius thread, they're very impressive.

Longhunter (1300 HP? I think): 00A13490, long Mantix (3300 HP): 00A12FB0, long Thunder the T-Rex (6600 HP): 00A13290, long Campaigner (3300 HP): 00A13A00, long There is no specific address that I found for jump height, but there is an address for global Z axis location (009E58CE, short). These were all obtained using MHS, but because it monitors the RAM for both the game and Mupen itself, I've heard some stories of addresses changing for no reason. I never had any problems though.

Jabo's wasn't used because it and DeHackEd's computer don't get along. I agree that there are some things about the AVI that look different from console (specifically the disappearing guns when the wall gets too close, the shadowboxed texts). Also, the wall cannon you're referring to allowed me to get to the backpack about 2.5 seconds faster than in your submitted run, but it is unfortunate it takes so long to set up.

I respectfully disagree And unlike one of the two movies above, I didn't submit this, then accept and publish it within 1.5 minutes for my personal gain. But of course everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Very cool run. I have a big complaint though: I didn't get to see what 95% of the bosses did! You should make a run that shows each of the bosses different attacks. No, I'm not serious. Clear yes vote, and one more 2004 movie on the chopping block!

You two need to ride more rollercoasters or something. :) But I did add a disclaimer. Thanks for watching anyway!

Mmkay, I know this is a dangerous ground to be making a first post on, but really. Jesus christ guys, get a hold of yourselves. All I hear is 'TAS is superior because ---' 'Fuck you regular speedruns > TAS' and it's just plain stupid.
I also haven't heard any of this. Could you cite some quotes where you think this feeling has been conveyed?

If anyone is curious, I'm continuing to slowly work on this, and I'm making steady progress (at a snail's pace). I'm in the middle of 3-1 and have gained roughly 3 seconds on Comicalflop's WIP, but since I don't know how long the last 5 or so levels are, I can't give an estimated time of completion (however between 10-15 minutes is almost definitely possible). I'll continue to chug along in my spare time, so don't expect regular updates, but if you'd like to see the WIP, just ask whenever I'm on IRC. Hey, that rhymed.

I think that's sound advice for everyone across the boards. The community as a whole seems to be getting uptight and edgy.
When someone insults what you like to do, or how you spend your time, or what you believe in, you get edgy. This happens with religion, politics, and apparently speed running. But, there can be a difference between "edgy" and "defending what you believe in". Although, from the very first post, Warp basically said he didn't like some speedruns because the graphics in some games are watered down, and there was some annoying flickering of nightvision goggles during cutscenes (hardly an indictment of all speedruns in general). I know how he feels, especially when watching a TAS full of 'quivering' (ie back and forth every frame). Annoying movements is not a problem specific to speedruns alone.

I never had a need or want to hate speedruns, or anyone associated with them. But I now officially hate Nate. EDIT: I read a bit further, and I now only officially hate his first (and some subsequent) posts.

Saturn, I'm curious how you're so confident about everything being subpixel perfect when you don't use any sort of RAM watcher?

Epilepsy-inducing flickering isn't maybe the best way to kill downtime, but I don't honestly see the huge uproar here (unless you're epileptic). I like it when there's at least something going on. Nothing is as boring as either watching the player to stare a wall or the same cut scene you've seen over and over again. And why whine here at TASvideos, of all places?
I much prefer being bored to being annoyed.

There have been instances of longer movies obsoleting prior movies, and this seems like a case where that would probably be appropriate. Usually a note is included on the published movie page explaining the difference. I'm sure getting Bisqwit to weigh in on the issue would be smart though.

With all the hacks that have been showing up in the queue recently, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw these sometime soon. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9BA8X1YBdY&NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9BNXyh09p0&NR=1

This looked well played, but I had it on 150% speed after watching for 15 minutes because it became very repetitive after that. I can see the appeal of running through a stealth based game, but as someone who hasn't played a lot of splinter cell, I just didn't really enjoy watching it. It would have made a big difference if the animations weren't as long as they were, as it seemed like many of the levels had a very disjointed feel due to the sudden change from pretty fast movement to a sudden stop to go behind some boxes. Also, after the first half of the game was over, I really couldn't spot anything that you were doing that was new or interesting. The same puzzles reappeared, the enemies didn't seem to get any more intelligent or harder to dispose of, and all of the required stealth moves stayed the same. A run half as long as this would have shown off everything this movie did. To sum up, I think you did a good job on it, but in my opinion it's just not a well suited game to TAS. Sorry, but I'm voting no. EDIT: Also, looking back at the responses that the previous movie garnered, it seems that many people had similar opinions about that movie despite it being 33% shorter.

Overall I thought it was a pretty entertaining movie, and thankfully there wasn't much consecutive jumping after you got the suit/booster. You managed to make the autoscroller parts entertaining and full of kills, and the rest of the game looked good. I only have one question: In level two, with the black ooze that follows you, at one point you reach a platform that has ooze on both sides, and ooze coming up from the floor. It seemed like you ended up being at the left side of the screen at the end, and then had to make your way over to the right side after you're able to move on again, if you get what I mean. I'm basically wondering why you didn't stay over at the right side of the screen so that when the ooze disappears, you can be on your way. If there's a reason for this, or if you actually did move over at the earliest possible moment, I won't hesitate to give this a yes, but I'll withhold my vote for now.

I watched this, and have some comments. First of all, if death could be used as a shortcut to save some time, I think it would be a good thing to go back and redo the game. I don't say this just because it could save time (hopefully some of the spikes that you're forced to wait for could be skipped), but because I think you lost a lot of opportunities for additional entertainment throughout this run. There were a lot of times with the ghosts (the mid level bosses you couldn't hit) where you just stood in one place and jumped. A lot could have been done with those to keep the audience entertained. The same scenario pops up with some of the platform and elevator rides; you don't have to just stand still during those times. Along similar lines, the quivering or stuttering you did was ok once or twice, but it seemed to be your only method of filling dead time. Since you're new to TASing I know it seems like a good idea to spam different buttons every other frame, but a lot of the time some more planned out and slower movements can make a better impression. The dead times are your chance to be creative and fun, don't just do the same thing over and over again, because the audience will get bored. I hope this makes sense to you Shiru. It is by no means a bad run, I just think that it could be made a lot better. I would suggest making a second version and try to implement some new and different things, and then I wouldn't have a problem voting yes. As for now, I have to give it a meh.

I've never played this, and thus have never found the runs to be uber-entertaining, but I do love a good glitch fest, and this certainly qualifies. Yes for an improvement, and for killing a boss below the ground, but yet somehow in the air.
