Now Chamale and I can be super excited to TAS on our Macs! (even though I do all of mine on my Dell laptop anyway). Thanks Nitsuja! EDIT: Thanks to zones too!

I play on full tilt also, haven't played for a while because I went bust, but with some free time coming up I figured I'd split it between TASing and playing some poker. But since I'm a poor grad student, with no steady employment, I do the cheap SNGs, most the 1,2 and 5 dollar ones.

Does not having the shrooms influence things? Sure it was faster, but I can't see the differences in play in terms of sloppyness(although I don't have a good eye for MK64 too much). Is there a run around w/ the grand prix mode to give a better comparison?

By being unrelentingly methodical, I guess.

I agree that speed should not be the only aim for a movie, not at all. However, when you have a movie that is 70 seconds long, almost (and I say almost because I don't want to sound like I'm discouraging anyone from trying) any entertainment thrown in will make the run noticeably slower, which IMO looks sloppy and actually less entertaining (although I know there are bound to be people who disagree with me). However in a longer movie, say one that is 15 minutes, the few seconds spent on entertainment may not even be noticeable because of the extra length of time the person is paying attention. 4 seconds spent for entertainment in DK is 6% of the entire movie, whereas 4 seconds of a 15 minute movie is less than a tenth of a percent. The ratio for entertainment vs speed is just wrong for this movie (still not dissuading anyone from trying).

Because I'm relatively new, I'm asking this in all seriousness, and not sarcastically: How many times has a movie been obsoleted by a movie that is longer, but more entertaining? I assume this would fall into a similar category, and if it has been done before, then you certainly have a point that speed isn't all we care about. But speed certainly seems to be the one criteria that is considered above all others.

mmbossman, so you're saying, because you think this movie cannot be made more entertaining, so nobody should even try?
Not at all, people can try all they want. But it's a minute and 10 seconds long. If someone, Phil included, can put something in there that makes me laugh or think "wow, that really was entertaining", I'll certainly vote yes. But I have strong suspicions that there can't be much done to dramatically change the movie for entertainment purposes, while still achieving the same time. As I said, the inherent entertainment from a run this short is the speed at which it is beaten. But anyone can feel free to try, I'm certainly in no position to tell them what they do with their time.

God there's that word again. It's like the batsignal for JXQ. It's a JXQignal. Oh, and a one minute movie can't very well be improved in the entertainment area. IMO, the entertainment from a movie like this is the speed at which it's beaten. In longer movies, there may be time for other 'entertainment factors', but gimme a break. Jumpman doing something different for 2/10s of a second is supposed to be more entertaining? Not even if he bent over and mooned me would I be more entertained. (Ok, I'd be entertained at that, but only that).

Amazing! An excellent example of why I really believe that no run is "perfect", and anyone who thinks so has simply stopped trying to find new techniques. Thank you for this movie, it means so much more than just the 8 seconds it saves.

Can someone please lock this now? I've seen enough examples of pride in this thread to know I shouldn't be worried anymore about why I make a run, or what other people think of it, since so many more people seem to have bigger egos than I'll ever have from making movies out of video games.

There's been debate over exactly what type of game OoT is ever since it came out, but all I said was that it had elements of RPGs, not that it was one. It's not too important anyway, it's still a great (and broken) game.

But it does have RPG elements that can change strategy such as items and magic. I've always thought of it as an action/RPG hybrid.

While I think that "simpler" games such as platformers do follow the logic that TASes should never come in slower than SDA runs, RPGs are an entirely different realm than them, especially a game as deep and complex as Chrono Trigger. It was the first RPG I ever played (on an emulator none the less), and I'm still finding out new stuff about it 9 years later. In terms of time comparisons, genre is everything.

After watching both this and the WIP, I'm glad you went back and changed up some things in the autoscrollers, they had some extra flair compared to what you had before. I think the later levels are definitely the better part of this movie, and I almost laughed out loud in class when you started turning the back towards the viewer so it looked like you were taking a leak. That was funny. One thing I wish I had brought up before when I watched the WIP was that I didn't like the random hit taking. I know they're all at the end of the stages, so it's intentional, but it still looks kinda sloppy. Unless taking damage actually speeds things up by allowing you to stay closer to the edge (which may be the case in a couple of the stages), that's a major problem for me. Again, I wish I'd brought it up before in the other thread. I meant to, I swear:( Overall it wasn't super exciting, but it was more enjoyable to watch for me than some of the other published movies. However I need to hold off my vote until I find out whether taking damage actually saves time, because that is what stands out for me as bad in this movie. And I feel really bad I didn't bring it up before you submitted too. EDIT: Decided the damage taking doesn't make enough of a difference to vote meh. Voted yes.

Considering there was almost a civil war here about whether a run without swastikas should obsolete a movie with swastikas, I can't image trying to get anyone to agree on something that's so arbitrary and subjective.

Ok, when I made this thread I never intended for it to become yet another pissing contest. Either get back on topic like thegreginator tried to do, or mods can feel free to lock it since circular logic like what's being shown always leads to spam and more pointless arguments, instead of actual discussion.

My original one, the 8 point interlacing star with a dark blue outer half and a light blue inner half, is a design I drew back in high school. I usually have about one creative idea about every 5 years, and this was it from age 14-19. It started out as a blank outline, but when I was a freshman in college I wanted to get it inked, but the tattooist told me to spice it up a bit with some color. Blue has always been my favorite, so the resulting image has been between my shoulder blades for the past 4 years. The other, newer variations were just created about 2 weeks ago using artweaver... I like some of them more than others, but I think they're all pretty cool.

Last I checked there wasn't a concensus reached at the "official" petition, and that all sorts of options were still up in the air.

The game was playing perfectly until i reached the final level. There is some flying eyeballs that comes out in series of eight. This creates some pretty obvious lag. When i destroy them, they explode creating even more lag. When i run into them, they disappear, this creating no lag at all. So my question is.. Should i take the damage or take the lag??
Whichever is faster;) No, seriously, I learned from two of my runs being either bettered or rejected from not taking damage that it's best to just do whatever takes the least time. Health is just another resource the game gives you to make the best movie, and although I used to think it looked sloppy to lose health, now I'm of the opinion that if taking damage leads to faster levels, it should be done whenever possible.
