anyway, i'd do a proof of concept testrun to decide which stars WORK, before doing the final thing.

<UoBtEx_FODA>what will be time consuming? <mr_roberts_z>Picking up the 100-coin star wouldn't do anything except look good <UoBtEx_FODA>not if you need it for MIPS <UoBtEx_FODA>after mips, let it appear but don't get it <mr_roberts_z>But we have other stars for that, like PSS and TotWC <UoBtEx_FODA>will they all count enough for MIPS? if so, never get the 100 coin star, but why would you consider breaking the level in two just to avoid it's appearance? <mr_roberts_z>I never suggested that, I think someone else did <UoBtEx_FODA>what about not getting the red coins star last? <UoBtEx_FODA>except for LLL i can't think of any level where that wouldn't be the fastest <UoBtEx_FODA>in LLL you'd want to let it appear but ignore it and get one inside the volcano <UoBtEx_FODA>Baxter also thinks that you should only get the all coins in the main 15 courses <mr_roberts_z>If the red coin star is closest to the last coin, we will...but for example, in CCM, the last coins we get might be the arrow shaped coins near Wall Kicks Will Work...better to get that star than go all the way back up to the red coin star <UoBtEx_FODA>I see <UoBtEx_FODA>that's fair enough too <mr_roberts_z>So whether it happens to be the red coin star or not, we'll get the nearest star to the final coin. If the course is in the Lobby, that may be the 100-coin-star (and then Exit Course right after)

Collect 100 coin star, collect the rest of the coins and then collect the red coin star. what's wrong with that?

IF you're going to collect it, WHY don't you collect it AS SOON as it appears????? I really have no idea what you're thinking! ¬¬ I really don't think it'll be faster to avoid the 100 coin star appearace... But you may not disconsider it then if you're thinking about that. The time to count coins after the level's end is insignificant to be considered. OBS.: don't forget that the 8 red coin star will ALWAYS appear, unless you break the level in two, but the time it takes to exit and re-enter the level AND activate a new star can never be faster than just going from the last coin to the 8-red coin star. Also, won't the coin counter on the lobby menus be not fully counting all coins on the level if you take some coins, exit and then take the other coins? I think it counts the maximum amount of coins you had at any given time on that level, but correct me if I'm wrong. I just think it'd be troublesome for the programmers to give each coin an unique tag.

Why do you want to get the 100 coin star "last"?

keep in mind that when you get 100 coins there are still many coins in the level, so the star wouldn't appear at the end or something. it would be pretty clear that the star appears because it has to.

Why not just get the red coin stars as well, with exception to the Bowser stages and secret star levels, you should end up with 30 stars overall.
why would you want 30 stars? the 100 coin star is not needed after you can make MIPS appear (15 stars).

It would be a minimum star run, collecting all coins. Note: he needs to collect a star that ends the level in order to compute the acquired coins. So he can't grab the coins and then exit the course (pause menu). That being said, he'd get the 100 coin stars in the first levels (pre-mips), and then the 8 red coin ones. And then, after MIPS, I believe he can ignore the 100 coin star after it appears, and go just for the 8 red coins one.

I have suggested for them to make it like this: - aims to acquire maximum amount of coins of the main 15 courses as fast as possible. But it'll also need to have a restriction not to use any "infinite" coin multiplication glitch, because that'd make the run hours long.

I got the same sense Bisqwit got about the restrictions being arbitrary - caps I can see, and maybe cannons, but coins?
Each level in mario 64 has 2 statistics (you can access the statistics screen by pressing START): how many stars were collected on each level AND how many coins. You can have a save file in the game with 0 coins on all levels, but with the most stars. That's where the challenge originated. Mario 64 allows 4 save files, and they are generally used by speedrunners to store these separate challenges, which gives the game a bigger replay value: 1 - full completion (120 stars + all caps) 2 - least stars completion 3 - CCCless run 4 - Maximum coins on all levels All of these can be verified legitimate by loading the game. Except in CCC you can't count all coins in the game (only the coins inside the levels), but for the TAS it was decided to be simpler to just say no caps, cannons or coins anywhere in the whole game.

70 stars is way more "random" than CCCless, for many reasons already discussed on the mario 64 threads.

Guys, this is mario 64 we're talking about. It can generate more interest than 40% of the games on the site, which are quite obscure. Do you really think this will get less views than dunno, GBC Deja Vu 1&2 or NES "Sypha path" Castlevania 3 (JPN) (examples picked for no particular reason)??? I think this game deserves more than 2 runs... I voted YES.

These conditions used in the submission sound somewhat arbitrary to me. What next, a play that completes all stars that can be done without bringing a piranha plant, bobomb or goomba into camera's view?
It is simply THE most classic challenge in the supermario64 community.

I think it's necessary, so it's a tie. DK64_master wasn't talking about my idea.

When i said that the message would not be open for everyone i meant that anyone can send, but it would only be visible to the author. Sorry bad choice of words. @xkeeper: read the post, and not only the thread title. actually, you can read just the thread title, but then don't reply.

comment about what? i'm talking about comment to the game, not comment about religion, my mood or chain letters :P about your other comment: if the person is sending the comment, that's because it was enabled. if it was disabled, the "send a message" link would never be there, of course!

exactly. not only you're not bound to get a response, nobody will see your "ultra funny" trolling, so that's a great discouraging feature. i see it like this: "send the author a message" *click* small pop up with text box and another small box for contact email, and a send button. *send* popup closes. if the author is getting a lot of spam on a certain movie (like, super mario movies), he will disable the option to send messages. in fact, i think it should be disabled by default. this send comment option is important for not so famous games, because it's hard to get feedback for them.

I liked watching this movie as a TAS maker, but not as a NES player. The impressiveness here for me, was the technique, and not the result. But I'm not the biggest megaman fan ever.

What about then a "send a message to the author" option? this could be turned on or off by the author (allow or not allow), and it would send a message to the private message box on the forum. All it would ask is for an e-mail "so the author can contact you back if needed".

How many times have we seen someone introducing themselves and mentioning that have been frequently visiting the site for years? several.. A simple and easy way to say something could produce interesting results. edit: @ Bisqwit: I see... I'm thinking. you're right that it's a bad thing to discuss the same thing on two places. the only way to implement this then would be move all post-publishing comments about the movie to this comment section. but that sounds like a major change.

What about adding a comment section on the published movie page which doesn't require registering? just like blogs have... It could encourage people to give their feedback on movies. We must admit that only the TAS enthusiast is willing to go on the forum and create an account just to make a comment. These comments can help identify what people find more entertaining, but it can also help on the discussion of movie improvement ("Hey, why didn't you jump and find the secret powerup block at section 1-2? that would be faster"). We may be losing information by not allowing the casual viewers to say something. But, I also wonder that this creates extra technical difficulties for a website with so many published movies, and that it would require some sort of spam/troll control...

If this had been done by me, I would have done some fooling around and funny stuff on the faster games so they would all end on the same exact frame. I think that ending each one as fast as possible is a waste of entertainment possibilities. But the movie was VERY impressive as a TAS, and must be really great to megaman fans. It is of course a YES vote.
