yea but nistuja, it's better to start the playback, choose "pause at frame x" and put max speed and go do other things so when you come back, the game will be paused waiting for you to resume recording. it's boring to pay attention to a long movie waiting for the moment to pause.

thanks for comments maza :) and asteron, what is a see-saw? you mean that loose bridge where you step on it and it loses balance? i don't think it can be done there at all, it wouldn't move up fast enough..

you must select "read-only" or else you start to record over the movie file as soon as you load the savestate. redownload because you just wrote all over the file hehe ;)

I vote no and yes and meh on my own movies. When i feel that i need to. Because the movie is meant for people to watch, what difference does it make if i made the movie? i submit even if i think nobody should watch it, but if they think they should, then that's what voting is for.

yea i was thinking 70-star run will be very much like the 120 star run, i mean, they should be if played perfectly. but its hard to decided on a 70-star route without a 120 star timeattack, so i don't know. i guess "gets 120 stars in less than 120 minutes" is a cool goal.

Getting through walls require a really high speed, i don't think such high speed can be gained by doing the trick on such a small plataform, but it can be used to simply move quickly.

http://www.angelfire.com/ex/uobt/sm64-foda-120stars-testrun-test24.zip thats the completed test run. i found a trick it may be usefull on some levels i hope, its the backwards longjumping but on a upwards moving plataform. doesn't have much ground to gain speed there, but if i go diagonally i can get some good speed i think. we'll see. when using the savestates make sure to replay the movie using the "read-only" option or else you will "erase" the movie file. the movie is 2 hours and 10 minutes long, so i put a savestate at start at snowman's land. (slot 7) http://rapidshare.de/files/8262033/sm64savestate7.zip.html the dire dire docks savestate still works, so grab it if you haven't watched from there yet. (slot 9) http://rapidshare.de/files/8217977/sm64savestate9.zip.html

Nitsuja, i think mupen64 can use savestate slot 0 as well, but i can't find a way to config that on your patched #8 version.

A 4-game run would be cool, i agree because those games can be completed very quick. wait a minute, there are 5 games on SMAS + world... 5 mins + 18 (lost levels) ? + 11 + 10 + ending scenes (maybe pick the biggest ending last, probably mario world) = 50 minutes movie? am i far off here? and thats 5 games... As for willywars how big would the movie be?

Maybe you didn't have enough speed going towards the stairs? after you go up one stair mario needs to have enough speed to get to the next stair in at least 3 frames, or else he jumps out of it. As it is not a slope i'm 99% sure it will work. There are some oddities to the game that i have ommited from route planning but i will carefully put into thought when going for each star, most especifically slopes and rails because they sometimes give some extra sliding speed that can be usefull.

Nitsuja, if i provide you with the graphics for it, would you like to implement (if feasible) an image of a n64 controller being displayed at the corner of the screen when toggled? button presses would lit respective buttons (by simply swapping the image of the button) and the analog stick would be the circle top of the stick image moving analogicaly in the n64 range. The Z button could be displayed by the side of the controller, separately. Would that be too hard? The input display is a little confusing the way it is hehe and that would look so cool... imagine being able to really see how fast one is spinning the stick vs bowser for example..

BTW, Foda, maybe you should test if it's possible to do the backwards stair jumping from the stairs that go down into the basement, if it's possible it would probably save time in reaching the ghost house down that hallway.
You're right, i realized that at those stairs it'd be a good idea to do that, but i didn't think wider, it really will save time and the route should be kept the way it is in the test run (with ghost house after coming out of the basement). nice thinking here is the WIP of the test run 96 stars, in 1 hour and 44 minutes. And here is a savestate (slot 9) at dire dire docks (after having taken the "chests in the current" star). comments: - dire dire docks: i will try picking a different star to see if manta will appear. - tiny huge island: route needs a little tweaks that are obvious when seeing the run - wet dry world: i opened the cannon only to show then that it's totally useless in this level. won't open it in the final run don't worry - tall tall mountain: entered the slide for 100 coins, i should have taken the 5 coins in the bridge instead of fighting chunkya (if thats his name, the purple bob-omb like fellow). other than that, i think the route is good...

humm what do you mean? i need the vanish cap inside ghost house, and in dire dire docks for some stars. in my test run i too get the vanish cap star without a vanish cap, but i need to activate the switch anyway

ok, in the test run i did all basement levels, including both caps and bowser. and only then i went for ghost house. that is wrong, after beating bowser one should re-enter its level and choose exit and that brings back to the lobby. i'd like to do ghost house before going to the basement, but i need the vanish cap for it. gotta think about that...

But to do that route one has to fall in the water several times, are you sure that having one pole here and there wouldn't prevent that?? i'll have to try using the poles, i watched the vid but i'm not convinced yet. hmmm ok ok i got it falling in the water only once. yea it's probably faster... funny thing is that i found out bowser's sub won't go away untill you beat bowser. its not the "board bowser's sub" star that makes the sub be there. that means i could get any other star than that, beat bowser and then "board bowser's sub" star should be floating there in the middle of nothing. but i guess it's faster to get all stars before fighting bowser i got all stars and manta ray didn't appear, but i didn't try picking one of the stars that i had already gotten, i always picked "board bowser's sub" star. anyway, if manta ray can appear before defeating bowser, let me know, i'll do that in the final run. for now i've completed ghost house, have 74 stars in 1h 22m, going to the upper floor now.

Excellent!! very nice use of glitches, very inventive! :) good job nitsuja you're one hell of a timeattacker! but i don't know what to vote either, because... 1 waprfull super mario 3 run is enough? this one is more interesting, but i tend to stick with the orginal games. dunno.

humm if i put mario64 in high speed (1600% to force maximum fps), with all graphics enhancements, 1280x1024 resolution, i still get the fps ranging from 60-140 My pc is pentium 3 ghz dual something, with a fx5200 video card. Yea it runs faster than playstation emulator EPSXE.

I very much doubt I would, busy with a lot of things, wouldn't know how to connect a controller, the ROM I have seems to run way too slow, 1.2 can't strafe using keyboard, have almost zero knowledge about how to do a TAS (how to rerecord and such, haven't looked into it much at all, and I wouldn't want to have to find everything out myself = only more work/time for me then, so if I'd do one, I'd need someone to guide me and help me whenever needed) etc
it's easier than you may think. remember when you started playing NESticle back then and used a lot of savestates to beat the game? its the same feel, except that it's being recorded and will look good after you're done.

ok sure thanks, maybe i should watch the 70 star run too, because, obviously i tried to get in the island many many times and didn't bother to re-record, so it's full of trial and error, but if you're saying the way i got on top of it wasn't good (backflip jump) then i guess i'll have to watch it. And no i'm not planning the in-level stars, i'm just finding a quick way to get the star and then i go and grab it. The purpose of this test run is to see if the castle route works and it doesn't matter much how i get the stars inside the levels (with some exceptions, like DDD now, where the castle route influence the time to take the star...). This is all because i don't want to start optimizing the movie (which is hard on a 3d game) and then just find out that i have to redo something. I won't like to redo things that were agreed to be the best strategy... unless it looks REALLY wrong. That's where the joined effort will be very helpfull, to keep the comments coming while it's time (like you're doing now). I'll read your post and download the 70-star run, but those might not make a very big difference at this point. On the other hand, i hope i finish the test run by this weekend, so we're not far from starting the real thing.

thanks for comments but i didn't really plan much the in-level stars. Yes i too got the center island star without even touching nessie. I had no idea someone could do it too, it was difficult to do even with tools (haven't watched the 70 stars run).
