skamastaG, I did some testing on YI4 and actually came pretty close to crossing the gap. I realized early on that I suck at doing it the traditional TAS way (pick up the shell, hit the star block, drop the shell, then kick it), so I came up with a new way to do it. Instead of picking up the shell and dropping it again, I just kick it right away, when I first get to it. Depending on the speed you kick it and where you jump, 3 different things can happen. These three things are all shown here, played "non-tool" (except for the savestates). Yoshis Island 4 Tricks Option 1: This is the very first thing you see me do in the video. For this, you kick the shell slowly and jump into the star block. When you come down, you will bounce off the shell as it is over the pipe. This really has no chance of making it, but is pretty entertaining if you cant get anything else to work. --The second thing I do in the video is a rare mess up of this, I usually get it every time when I try. Option 2: The third thing you see me do in the video. You kick the shell so slowly that Mario runs into it, but doesnt kill him because he's big. Ideally you jump as close as you can to the star block without hitting it, and like Fabian said, keep your jump short. This is really just an easier (and worse) way to do option 3. Comes pretty close to making it. --The fourth thing I do is a semi-rare mess up of option 2. Option 3: The fifth thing I do, this is really the best option. It's pretty much the exact same as option 2, but Mario doesnt get hit by the shell. This comes really close to making the gap, but is harder to do than option 2. Its not actually too hard to do though, I can get it probably 1 out of 3 tries. Can anyone verify if it is indeed possible to make the gap using option 2 or 3? This would make it much easier than the current TAS way.

What exactly did you have in mind? Dont forget to leave out Yoshis Island 2 as a cool level. That is the first level and is also really boring, so the tricks you pull on it set the tone for the whole run. The way you did the 2 up at the beginning alone convinced me that this run was going to be awesome. The way you switched the green and red shell is exactly what skamastaG does for our run on console. ;) I second all the levels JXQ mentioned plus any level where you flew through the ground and Castle #2 and FoI4.

Fabian, that run was amazing. Congrats on winning the race and producing such an awesome run. ;) When I went through and watched the video the second time, I decided to write down various questions I had as they came up. Sorry if some of these are stupid, it's just what popped into my head as I was watching the movie. First some general questions that apply to the whole run: You do a lot of kamikaze dives in this run. Doesn’t pressing forward to do these restart the fast flying oscillation and thus make you lose a bit of time, even if you come out of the kamikaze at the fastest oscillation? At the end of many levels, you come out of a pipe and then have a short distance to the gate. Is it ever possible to save time doing medium speed hop glitch or 8/5 over these stretches? It seems like you try it some times but not others. And now some specific level questions, in the order that the levels are done in: 1) In Castle #1, it seemed like you turned around for kind of a long time for the p-switch jump. Why didn’t you just do what JXQ did and just not turn around in the first place? 2) When getting to the first door in Castle #1, why didn’t you jump to do one hop glitch before the door? 3) In the second room of Castle #1, why did you take the fireflower? I though it was faster to avoid it. 4) It seems like you missed a few corner boosts in DS1…And maybe VD2 5) Was slowing down for that line of piranha plants at the end of VD3 absolutely necessary? It seems like they could’ve been hop glitched through if you were facing forwards. 6) I know you missed some corner boosts in Soda Lake. Why have you been missing them? Also, when you come out of the pipe at then end, you do what appears to be the hop glitch for medium running speed, but you don’t carry it through all the way to the gate, you walk the last couple of “squares.” Were you not actually doing the hopping glitch or is there another reason for walking at the end? 7) Why no 261 on SW2 (key)? 8) It seems like you fly unnecessarily high at the start of SW5 (key). 9) Fast p-ballooning on Tubular. “Allow Left+Right / Up+Down – off” was pretty clever. ;) 10) On Awesome, VIPer7 gets a 262 while you get a 261. What accounts for the 1 timeunit delay? 11) For FGH (FoI1 exit) you do a run at the very beginning without doing hop glitch or flying. Isnt this slow? You don’t do it the second time you play FGH… 12) Why didnt you get 99 lives? Or 99 gate points or 99 coins for the end? If you decided not to because VIPer7 did it, I think it wouldve been original and fitting to get 96 lives, 96 gate points, and 96 coins. ;) Overall, this run was pretty much flawless and *very* entertaining to watch. I loved the parts where you flew through/under the floor. I also liked all the autoscrollers and the parts of levels that you hopped through (Awesome!). Definately my favorite TAS so far.

BEST TAS EVER! Seriously, I have never seen a TAS that comes anywhere close to comparing to this one. It is without a doubt my all-time favorite. Not only will I vote a definate and resounding yes, but I will insist that this movie is given a STAR and even go so far as to say that it should be the first video in the "movies recommended for first time viewers" list. I have been following this run's progress from the beginning, and I had very high expectations for it. After watching it, my expectations were completely shattered. I was absolutely blown away. When I first saw VIPer7's run, I thought to myself "Wow, thats as good as it gets. You cant play SMW any better than that." Boy was I wrong. The way Fabian effortlessly destroys everything in his path while never slowing down is a thing of beauty. Fabian, I may have lost our race, but it was worth it. Seeing this run completed is something I have been waiting for for a very long time. Congrats on an awesome run! Now, I'm off to go watch it again. ;)

So did you do Yoshi flight for VD3, VD4, or CBA? Was it faster for any of these levels? Just got a 298 on Sunken Ghost Ship. I only paused once to get through a boo circle, so this time may be improvable by 1 (maybe 2) timeunits. Making videos is getting to be really annoying so right now I'm just getting the levels down, I might make vids later. EDIT: 299 on Sunken Ghost Ship.

Fabian, I just thought of something for your run, sorry if you are already doing this. Would it be faster to do the glitch that allows you to do regular flying with Yoshi in the levels where Yoshi is necessary? If it works the same as regular flying without Yoshi, it should be faster than doing the Yoshi flight the traditional way. I'm not exactly sure how the glitched fast Yoshi flight works, but even if it takes a little time to set up, it might still be faster than the traditional flight alternative. The levels VD3, VD4, Cheese Bridge Area, VoB2, VoB3, and VoB4 could all benefit from this, unless, again, the setup time is too long, but I dont remember it being too bad. Sorry if this is late, but hopefully you can still do it on VoB2, VoB3, and VoB4 if it is actually faster. You would only need to do the flying glitch once at the beginnings of the levels, and then you could use the hop glitch to maintain the fast flying speed. Hope this helps.

This sounds like an awesome run. Good luck. You didnt explicitly say this, but I'm assuming you're going to get 128 pokeballs (or some kind of balls) as well as the rare candies, right?

Tompa, for CI5, what time did you get into the pipe at? I'm wondering if you saved time there or at the chucks. For the chucks, I hit the one on the pipe and went a little backwards and hit the first one in the line of three but it launched me forwards (I know its still slower than not hitting it). Did you ever get run coming after the pipe? I have gotten it before the pipe. Also, for the Fortress, are you using Switch Palaces? Because it makes it much easier and lets you keep your run at the beginning. If you are using them, you can use this to get a non Switch Palace savestate, up to Castle #6. Fabian, thats funny. Did you test out exactly how much faster going left was? EDIT: For CI3, I tried to get 257 but I couldnt. I did the vine perfectly and it was close to a 257, but still a 256. For CI5, I get in the first pipe at 293, is this what you get Tompa? I also tried out Castle #6 and got a 228. This was my first run of the castle but I think its a pretty solid time.

Here are some random times for just messing around. Keep in mind these are very improvable, just a starting point. Chocolate Fortress - 235. My spike room sucked, I never got run because the spikes always blocked me. I got to the thwomp room at 271. In the thwomp room, I never lost run and got to the Reznor door at 246. Chocolate Island 4 - 259. Never kept run (except at very first tar pit jump). Chocloate Island 5 - 279. I dont know if this time could be improved, this level's pretty straightforward. Fabian, way to go. I'm getting my ass kicked in this race, but it doesnt matter because your run is almost done! :) Cant wait to see it! I'm sure you already know this, but remember to go left instead of right in the second room of Valley Ghost House for the key.

Video for CI3 small is done, ends in 256. Chocolate Island 3 Small (key) - 256 I can get a time of 361 by going into the pipe, but this is slower in realtime. Making a video for Chocolate Secret is gonna really suck, it wont be for a while if I even decide to do it.

Well I just finished the first half of the OoT run, up to where JXQ's commentary ended. That commentary is the only thing that made the movie worth watching in my opinion. JXQ, when are you going to record the second half? I want to wait for it before I finish the video. Tompa, I'm going to be working on CI4 next as I'm recording CS and CI3 if you want to help me test out some stuff or figure out some routes, I havent even tried the level yet.

Okay turns out VIPer did have the fastest method for CI2 gate. Tompa, didnt you work on CI3 small at one point? I'm curious what times you have gotten. I have gotten 261 with taking the pipe and 256 without taking the pipe, which is actually faster than the 261 in realtime. Also, are you still working on Chocolate Secret? My OoT bittorrent is running at 340 KB/s. Way to many people want to see this movie. ;) And again, anyone know how to edit out parts of a video using Media Player Classic? Or something similar?

Fabian you're killing me! What time (in timunits) did you end up getting on CI2 gate exit because I have done some testing on this. Also what route did you take? I actually dont think VIPer's is the fastest. I have gotten the ideal times down for Chocolate Secret and CI3 gate (I cant really do key small). I just havent recorded them because recording is a huge pain. If you ever mess up you have to go back, stop recording, and go through this big menu to start it up again. Does anyone know an easy way to edit movies? It would be easier for me if I could just record continuously and edit out all the mess up parts. I have Media Player Classic, and I've heard you can do it with this, but I'm not sure how. Well I'm off to watch this Ocarina of Time video that everyones been talking about. I'll be sure to play JXQ's commentary while watching so its not a total waste of time. ;)

Why would I ask at SDA? I dont plan on submitting these videos for anything official, they're just there for entertainment and showing my routes and strategies. The only reason I even asked here is so someone wouldnt find these videos on YouTube, think they're tool-assisted, and then get mad at me for not properly labeling them as tool-assisted (as happened with spezzafer's Mario 64 video on YouTube). If you want to see how they are "labeled," see here.

Okay for the second room I just did it perfectly with a p-run never being lost and got a 259. Then I tried doing some sliding and got 260. Weird how sliding is faster than keeping your run. Also, I redid Chocolate Island 1 using Fabian's advice to do the hop glitch at the end and improved it from a 261 to a 262. Thanks Fabian. Here's the new link EDIT: The third room is easy. Got out of the pipe at 225 and finished the level with a time of 223. Now I just have to make a video.

Yeah Tompa I've done that at the beginning before but I figured it wouldnt save a full timeunit so I didnt do it regularly. When I did it I just did a normal jump though, not a spin jump.

But I keep my P-speed at the beetles in beginning and I'm not losing it in the end either. Just jump up at the checkpoint and you can reach the pipe with P-speed.
I keep my p-run at the beetles at the beginning too...not sure if you're suggesting I wasnt. At the end I've reached the pipe without losing p-run by doing it your way but I always hit the checkpoint which isnt allowed. My way is still fast enough to get into the pipe at the fastest possible time (as far as timeunits are concerned). Since going into a pipe or door resets the timer at the beginning of whatever digit it is on, it doesnt really matter if you get in at a "good" 282 or a "bad" 282, it'll be the same in the end since were just going by timeunits here. Let me know how you do in the second room. My 258 was just with sliding, but it is possible to keep up a run the whole way I just realized. I'll make a video of this sometime.

Okay, heres that 282 for the first room (.smv). Chocolate Secret Room 1 - 282 Also, I found another "Mario goes through the floor" glitch on accident. I initiated it just by jumping at the right spot, which is weird because usually you somehow have to "push" Mario through the floor. Mario goes through the floor with a well-placed jump (.smv) My best time for getting into the second pipe is 258 but this can probably be improved. I'm done working on this level for now.

Tompa, good luck with Chocolate Secret. I absolutely hate that level. What are your best times for getting in each pipe? I've gotten in the first one at 282, but only once. Not sure about the second one yet.

Tompa, I dont think the CI1 p-switch jump would be any faster. Plus its way harder to do. I just now watched your CI2 video and its funny how we did things almost exactly the same. Chocolate Secret is a pain. I cant get past the first room without losing run, I'll keep working on it.

And he pulls ahead! Chocolate Island 2 Small (key) - 268 I tried every possibilty for the third room with the chucks. My way looks sloppy, but was the fastest.

I'm right behind you. Choco-Ghost House Small - 240 This level sucks small, as you will see in the second room. Really nothing I can do about it.

Yeah I always play with a 91 file on console because I find the "fall colors" annoying.
