i think thats the biggest one, because after getting the baseball i sill have to get the will on the house on the right, and that isnt too far away, and after that the road doesnt backtrack on itself like at the beginning of the area.

great idea nitsuja, i forgot about the whistle! an even better place to use it might be around frame 12400 to skip to the section of town with the baseball. or even better yet from an earlier point all the way up to near the baseball. i'll give it a try! i also just realized that i don't need to switch to the whistle when i first get it, which might save a few frames. while i'm at it i can see if i can't improve the doom fight even more and try to give him one continuous pounding. (by the way when i make a new version should i edit this submission, or create a new submission?) edit - I think someone asked about avoiding the toon patrol, and I managed to do it one time, but it was in a weird 3-way collision involving another of the cars on the road, and I think I found it was faster to wait until they were behind me before going.

if youre using the same item set as I did, just load up that movie, then start playing once the game starts in valiants office. otherwise, i dont know! the randomization is pretty frustrating

here 's the route that picks up the whistle. I hit the toontown tunnel about 2000 frames ahead of my last run. movie

Well, i've mapped out 9 different ways the items can be placed and none seem as good as the first one i did, so i guess i'll work on improving that one. Rick - youre right, the wills do change... I'm thinking of changing your suggested path a little, because i'd really like to get the whistle to skip the long road in the north of the map. this means one more death (because its guarded by a cat at Maroon Studios), and so I would have to get the rattle to avoid the two other deaths (but I would die getting the rattle too). I think the trade-off would be quicker though. DJ Fozz - the whistle can be found usually at the Maroon Studios or buildings 23 or 20. Also, with animals that guard items its possible to get the item and die without using spring shoes - just charge ahead. but i think this only works with cats and dogs - the rats get me every time.

I'm finding that the wills are always in the same place. so for now i'm trying to find games with more desireable item locations, then hopefully work from there.

I think thats a good idea to get the absolute minimum number of items. Other ideas i had for improving on the time were to use the whistle to avoid having to drive that long zig-zag stretch of road (i dont think possible on the item set i had for my run), and to switch items whenever Eddie has to stop, because to switch items Eddie has to stop and start again. There are always 4 will pieces, and are not always guarded. One time i happened to find the spring shoes sitting on the sidewalk in front of store #1... too bad i didn't save that game! Ideally would be to find the spring shoes, whistle, and detonator somewhere near the store. that way with your spring shoes trick the wills could be gotton if guarded or in a cave. oh, and on the wider roads of toontown oncoming cars can be dodged. also, when playing through a game to see where the items are, the search can be more efficiently by knowing that the essential items (spring shoes, detonator, whistle, will) will always be laying around, and not in a desk or mousehole or something.

sorry, i wasn't clear - store #2 is the one down near benny that's locked, and store #1 is the one near valiant's office. so store 1 always starts with the dynamite, and store 2 always with the cigar.

anythings worth a try heres some rough frame counts for store #2 - for some reason they're a little different from the other store cigar cheese ~9400 rose ~17600 shoes ~25900 dynamite ~34000 whistle ~42000 flashlight crowbar cigar

I can't figure the randomization out, maybe someone with a better knowledge of those things can take a crack at it anyway, heres the frame counts for the first store's items: 9184 - whistle 17730 - flashlight 25967 - crowbar 33895 - cigar 42132 - cheese 50369 - rose 58605 - spring shoes 66842 - back to dynamite

Yea, I forgot to put the finishing touches on the last few seconds of the run. a rookie mistake, i guess! In toontown i was chased by the toon patrol for much of the map, but once I go inside a building, then they go away. after i come out of that building i'm not on the road long enough to trigger them again i don't think. it would have been nice in L.A. if i could have gotten them to chase me sooner, during that long zig-zagging part when i'm heading north, but the trick there is to somehow get them to appear behind you instead of in front of you (passing cars without hitting them is impossible except on some of the wider roads in toontown). when i came back they were in front of me, and i wasn't able to get them behind me then.

to get the whistle, enter the shop door after frame 9184

For me the earliest frame to press start is 535, and doing that several times produced different item placements each time.

I believe so.. or are you saying that pushing start at the earliest possible time always results in that item arrangement? after fooling around i think the shop items are on a timer, and it doesnt matter how many items you got, how many times you went in and out of doors, or how many steps youve taken. i went and stood outside of the store for almost 3:00 (only ducking inside when the toon patrol came) and finally got the whistle. this timer also runs when youre in buildings - i stood on the sidewalk screen in front of the store for the same amount of time and got the whistle that way too. so this wouldnt be useful in a run i dont think unless the items were laid out such that they are nearer to the store than benny.

I've been having the same problem too lately of only getting the dynamite in the store, but i swear once i got the whistle or crowbar first. i dont know why. oh, and all the items change from game to game. i think the arrangement of items i happened to get for my run seems like a good one since the wills are in the caves closest to the road. some caves you would have to hike a long way to get to otherwise

DJFozz, thats interesting that in your run the items are in exactly the same place as in mine... i'm wondering if the only items that are random are the will and things for sale in the store. It looks like you handled the crowbar and picked up items much more smoothly than i did :)

Thanks DJFozz. I made a movie here of a run up to Doom. i havent actually tried to beat doom with only fists yet, so i dont know if it works or not. But it shows how a run could be made - its pretty straightforward, it just takes a lot of planning. Once the game starts all the items are locked in place, so i went everywhere and found every item, then tried to map out the fastest route. Once i can get the whistle to work it would probably be best to find a game where the whistle is sold first thing in the store, and get it immediately. The driving can probably be cleaned up, and at one point i actually passed a car without hitting it, so maybe its possible to do that with every car. its also hard to plan the quickest route because Benny gets bumped around as soon as you get out of him. In this run I also manage to avoid running into Psycho.

I know what people wrote, but can anyone be more specific, like what button to press, and how long it takes for Benny to get there? I selected the whistle, then went to the world map and pushed all the buttons, but nothing seemed to happen, or if something was happening Bennie was really slow getting there.

One item i still havent figured out how to use is the whistle. it doesnt seem to do anything. And the heart as well... From playing w/ judge doom it seems like only the fist is needed to kill him and sometimes if you punch him fast enough he seems to freeze. that might leave for a cheap way out. i think it might also be possible to quickly switch from the fist to spring shoes to dodge, then attack. as for the randomness, it seems that people/enemies are random, whereas the items are in a set place once the game begins. but i could be wrong :)

Does anyone know what triggers the shop item to change? and does it go in a set cycle, or is it random? I'm also wondering when Psycho appears, because sometimes I go outside a building and he's there, but then i reload the save state and he's not...

I wonder if the randomization continues during the game, or if once you start the game all the items are in a set spot. if its the former, it could be a real pain... maybe one would have to make a list of all the possible places the items can pop up, or if some items are random and others aren't. Like once I found a piece of the will outside the Gag Factory, but when i reset it wasnt there anymore. Also, are there any good walkthroughs of the game? the one on gamefaqs was just mainly an item list.

aaaaaahhh! I got through the run of the four levels (same link as above) and found that FODA was right, it just keeps going! a lot of the levels are improvable (by jumping early onto the trampoline when changing directions, and by not getting the torches in 3-3 and 4-3, which would make the cave in 3-4 and 4-4 be completely black) but i dont know if i should redo it since it doesnt seem like the kind of movie that should be submitted. maybe someone with a lot of patience can see if if there really is an end. also the movie can be shortened by using the level select and going to 1-7 immediately.

I got through level 2, the movie is at the same link as above. I found one trick that you can see at the end of 2-7 where if you jump at the right time you can fall through the end of the walls instead of falling towards the middle of the trampoline, but i think its only useful if you want to go back in the direction you were coming from. i'll have to check to see if i can use it in the earlier levels.

I noticed one stop before a trampoline at one level but I guess that was necessary because a cat was there, but that's all I could think of. Edit: I don't know the physics of the game, but maybe you can jump on the trampolines (if you didn't already do it) instead of walking on them, to save a few frames maybe?
Yea, the stop was to avoid hitting the cat. I still havent figured out how random the game is, because it seems like sometimes when i load a saved state twice the cats do different things, and even stopping one frame can make them do something different. I'll have to see if jumping onto the trampoline is any faster. In general jumping is slower than walking, and if you jump onto the left side of the trampoline it makes you jump to the center once before jumping off again. The levels get harder and harder, and have more side-levels sometimes, so hopefully they will be more entertaining. the finished movie should be four times the length of this one.

I made a movie of levels 1-1 to 1-8 to see if anyones interested in this game. I remember renting it, its one of those games where you die all the time at first, but gradually get better at it. I think the strategies of doing a speed-run are similar to DK, but its much longer. There are 4 levels total and the kittens get faster and faster, and the gameplay for some levels is a little different, the hardest probably being the fourth stage with the moving trampolines. Since this is my first run I dont know if it was difficult to make or not! http://home.uchicago.edu/~keller/Mappy-Land%20(U).fcm (youll have to cut and paste, i cant get it to appear right)
