All hail Neo-TASVideos! The tier names could be different to differentiate them from current stars and moons. Perhaps the top tier could be something like Spotlight, Pedestal, Showcase, or Greatest Movies, the moon tier could be something like Bookshelf, Counter, or Good Movies. Vault or Archive sounds good for the bottom tier. Edit: if the moon tier uses a different name and icon, the existing moons can be easily used in the new system.

The more I watch this run, the more I'm liking it. The notorious game is perhaps the most famous one for the system, and beating it this fast isn't trivial. It's a bit low on the entertainment, but it's enough to be interesting for 25 seconds.

By the way, the encoding hides E.T.'s health at the beginning because of the TASVideos message. This should be fixed if this is published.
There's no easy way to fix that - putting subtitles on the map would cover E.T. at times, putting them at the top would cover the symbols there, and translucency would make them somewhat less legible. Out of the available options, obstructing the number at the bottom seems good to me.

I was also unaware that a ROM file could be a zip file... And I am similarly waiting for an encode.
MAME ROMs are ZIP files.

Downloadable encodes have been redone with a dump from Atma that doesn't have the texture error. The new youtuber is coming up in a day or so.

The Spiritia run was dumped in a similar VM with different graphics hardware/drivers on the host system, and it doesn't have the anomaly. For unknown reasons, on the particular setup I'm using, the anomaly happens and there's not much I can do about it. Also, get your ass on IRC, you've been missed.

Archive collection Against all odds, Hourglass managed to sync without week-long voodoo magic rituals. This run is great, too.

Cutscenes and overworld segments seem all too frequent and the game is quite slow even during levels. The painful music doesn't help, either.

The sound errors weren't particularly distracting. You constantly switched weapons much earlier than necessary, which looks rather un-TASy. Were downtime antics not possible? In many boss fights, you were standing still for extended periods of time while pointing your weapon at the boss. The autoscroller section also looks like it could be much less dull.

re: revisions I'd say use the latest revision for publications because it's the "official" (most complete) game & shows more of the game, and previous revisions with their glitches for playarounds.
All published revisions are official. More recent also isn't necessarily less glitched - sometimes game-breaking glitches only exist in the latest revision. There's also funny cases like Commander Keen 1 where 1.34 was only released in the UK, 1.32 was part of a special Gravis deal and the most commonly encountered version is 1.31. What would be the preferable version in such a case?

For maximum power abuse, you'll need both me and Nahoc on the project. Throw in adelikat so that we can get authorization from the highest level.

I have been told that isn't as miserable to casual viewers but for how many times I have watched this run now it can be annoying and I apologize for that as it cannot be skipped. </div>
This is not true. It can be skipped by pressing either A or B (not too sure right now). Have this FM2 as proof. (done unassisted, by the way)
Well damn. Where were you 3 or 4 weeks ago? It can indeed be skipped through hitting A or B on the exact correct frame. It doesn't even affect a single bit of luck. Mods/Admins... I will leave this at your mercy but I have to ask do I need to resubmit this file to get this faster time published? I literally click A 80 frames after the end level screen begins and press B 65 frames later and it saves 5 minutes and 7.1 seconds without changing a single frame of input in levels. Is there a way I could just have the file change or do I have to go through the submission process again? I know this will greatly increase the entertainment so I don't see why it wouldn't be accepted but I don't want to bog up the submission feed if I don't have to.
Just resubmit.

The "Mine Missiles" are clearly labeled as bombs.
So what do everyone think? If I made a real TAS with a little better gameplay and increase the total time by perhaps 4-5 times, would this be considered a publish worthy game, even though it's obviously inferior compared to using a mouse? I'll still be continuing this test run with my keyboard either way, though I'm curious what people, and judges, think.
I'd reject any keyboard-only Tyrian TAS. As for goal choice, the game's scoring system is largely useless so I wouldn't consider highest score a viable goal. Maximum destruction in Full Game and Arcade would require using a largely identical cookie cutter setup for most of the game. Aiming for fastest time would require nuking bosses and scrolling pauses with powerful weapons and sidekicks, which would once again mandate a cookie cutter setup. Since weapon choice isn't a concern in Super Tyrian, maximum destruction could be an excellent goal for it. The twiddles can deal extreme damage right off the bat and the difference between unassisted and tool-assisted play is enormous. For Full Game and Arcade runs, going for a full-out playaround would seem to be the only goal that allows omitting a cookie cutter setup in favor of greater variety.

At 22:45/22:46, the sound cuts out entirely for a brief moment. Was this in the original movie file, or is this an encoding issue?
It's caused by a Hourglass deficiency. Hourglass developers seem to have bailed, so it's probably here to stay.

turska, this submission had 56% of total votes being "Yes", and it still gets accepted? Makes me wonder what does reasons like: "Rejecting due to poor audience feed back. " even supposed to mean. :P Btw, your reason for acceptance seem to disregard the audience's opinions, but whatever. :P
The numbers might look grim at a glance, but consider the following: 1. Many viewers thought that the game was a romhack. 2. I took feedback on the previous three submissons into consideration. Curiously, audience response got worse with each subsequent submission. Due to these concerns, I found the support% to be skewed and gave it less weight than normally.

Turska, thank you for adding me as a co-author of the submission movie. It's good to see my demo smvs can see the light of day by the emulator advance. However, the movie has two unoptimized sections compared to my demo. Crono's house You can move farther before Mom talks to Crono. Leene's Bell When you return the pendant to Marle, Crono and Marle must be on the same pixel. Otherwise an extra waiting time occurs when Marle joins in Crono. I wish I could fix them, but I've been away from TASing for almost two years and I've never used Lsnes. It would be nice if you can fix them.
I fixed them. Redoing the delayed resets will take a while.

All the information regarding this submission is out in the open - the decision about whether or not inichi is a coauthor in the context of a TASVideos submission is not mine to make. The rules don't have an exact precedent regarding something like this; if someone with sufficient authority makes a decision about this, I will follow it. Even if inichi is not semantically a coauthor, he would be credited in the publication text with some blurb like "inichi demonstrated the strategy used in TAS back in 200X. Only recently did tools become advanced enough for it to be possible".

Also, for the above reason, there is no way to confirm the validity of the movie, but I don't care. The reason is this is just a demo movie to show the further possibility of Chrono Trigger TAS. Hopefully this movie will work as a good reference when a new re-recording Snes9x that enables the reset between a frame comes out in the future.
Edit: also, I'll clarify the seemingly conflicting opinions I posted. The quip on IRC about not being against having inichi be a coauthor referred to a hypothetical scenario in which someone with sufficient authority deemed that to be preferable. The part in this thread where I say that I couldn't list him as a coauthor is based on my interpretation of the rules at the time of submitting.

And here is the original version of turska's run. Posting this here because I believe inichi should be at the very least listed as a coauthor, since the only thing that prevented him from submitting it back then was the lack of accepted tools, and turska didn't make any improvements, to my knowledge.
I mentioned inichi's run right in the first line of the submission text. I assumed most viewers would already be familiar with it. The run was used as reference - strategy-wise, I didn't find any improvements. Without inichi's demo run, this run would never have been made, but since he had no direct involvement in making this run, I can't list him as a coauthor in good faith.

Judging from his posts about the run, it would seem that inichi would be satisfied with how things worked out.
(Actually, I think it would be even better to PM inichi first, asking if he would like to play the run on lsnes himself, but it's too late for that.)
I considered approaching him about this. Howewer, I didn't see inichi idling on #tasvideos nor had he posted in over two years - in the time it would've taken for him to react, I could already have implemented the run myself. I also highly disagree with idea of certain games or categories being exclusive to certain people. TASing is about the runs themselves, not the particular individuals that happen to work on them.

I found an improvement near the end of the movie. Here is a very rough demonstration. Once you've implemented the improvement, just post the movie in this thread and I'll replace the submitted file.

Hourglass movie files contain very little useful information. As such, providing necessary information is up to the author. Providing this information will result in the submission being judged and processed faster. The DxDiag log and hashes of the directory tree are required. For a simple way of acquiring these, follow the instructions below: 1. Click Start->Run (Win+R) and execute dxdiag.exe. 2. Click Save All Information at the lower right of the DxDiag window. Include the resulting file in the submission text. 3. Download and install HashCheck. 4. Right-click the game folder and select Create Checksum File. Include the resulting file in the submission text.

DxDiag output from the author or anyone who got it to sync would be particularly desirable. For reference, here's what this particular system looks like.
I made a test run from where you can't get sync, if you can get it sync over that, I don't mind to continue it.
There's no problem with your movie - the desync is caused by Hourglass's limitations. The DxDiag log is essential in trying reproduce the conditions required for playing back the movie. To get the DxDiag log, do the following: 1. Click Start->Run (Win+R) and execute dxdiag.exe. 2. Click Save All Information in the lower right of the DxDiag window. Post the resulting file in this thread.

Everyone: please relax and stop minimodding. Marx: if you improve your movie again, you will post the movie file in this thread rather than submitting again. Now, let's proceed to discuss the movie rather than going on and on about this, shall we?

Wiki: SubmissionRules Wiki: SubmissionGuidelines Good job cancelling your old submission. If you have any further improvements you'd like to submit, please post the movie file in this thread instead of making a new submission; the movie file can be updated without having to resubmit.
