But if they required anything other than effort, not everyone would be able to beat them!

I attribute the problem primarily to the influence of emulators, save-states, speed-runs, and TAS runs.
Perhaps misplaced sentiments ... it seems more likely you focus on beating instead of playing simply because you are getting older. As we age, the exigencies of life and society at large pressure us into becoming more goal oriented people. How many of us take the time to "just play" any more?

I was thinking of a screenie either in the upside down level, or when he's glitching and it looks like Sonic is running downhill while simultaneously sinking through the floor.

Well he doesn't have the record for Sonic 1 and 10 bucks says that even if he attempted to obselte the previous run he wouldn't be able to beat it by >3 seconds.
$10,000 says there is a single level that proves you wrong. Seriously, though, if you cough up $10,000 I'd be happy to show it to you.

First of all, I voted yes. And you know what? If this game beats it so quickly, you probably have enough time to go into 8-4 with level select, win, and STILL obsolete the published run. Legit, right?
Hahahahahaha, I really like that idea, actually. That'll shut everyone the !@#$ up P.S. Angerfist, you're being a dick.

I recall timing myself at 5'12" when I was 8. I think that means I have the highest speed quotient in the world! Call me Mario Vos Savant ...

Trippy! I vote for publication in its own category, like the ALttP and Zelda 2 glitch runs.

I didn't know what the heck was going on, which I like! But Atma says he can beat you like the red-headed step-child you are, so I'll wait and see what happens!

Man, I'll vote for pretty much anything under a minute. I guess I'll watch it first, though.
