The Game

Rainbow Islands (レインボーアイランド) is a 1987 arcade game developed and published by Taito. The game is subtitled "The Story of Bubble Bobble 2" and is the sequel to Taito's hit game Bubble Bobble from the previous year. It is the second of four arcade games in the Bubble Bobble series (followed by Bubble Symphony and Bubble Memories, but itself has two direct sequels: Parasol Stars and Bubble Bobble Part 2). The game was ported for numerous home computers and game consoles.
The basic premise of the game is that each level is an island which is slowly sinking into the sea. The player must therefore get to the top of each level, by jumping on platforms and making use of the game's most distinctive feature: the ability to produce solid rainbows, which are used both as platforms to stand on, and as a weapon.
One of the features which sets this game apart from many others (and has no doubt been responsible for the game's popularity) is its 'hidden depths'. While initially appearing to be quite a simple game, Rainbow Islands in fact has a vast number of secrets for the player to discover, including secret levels, secret power-ups and riddles. Because of these elements, completing the game properly requires a large amount of dedication from the player. The scoring system also has secrets, which allow vastly higher scores to be achieved than normal.

Summary

This is an American version, this version cannot jump at the start of each stage. Japanese version can jump.I choose this rom for the music I like better.
The item dropping is related to the number of enemies that have been killed.

Look

The time that turn to black screen are different. This is not a regular time. And the time for roll the map to the end can change this randomly. For example,if you finish a map 1 frames faster, that may cost 10 more frames for the black screen. So this is one thing that I consider. And also,I must say thanks for Deign's insperation.

At last

If this is acceptable,I will complete the 100% version soon.

DarkKobold: Claimed.

DarkKobold: The audience reaction to this was generally negative, and I have to agree. The run was extremely repetitive. The Rainbow movement basically allows for all levels to be completed in the exact same fashion, and after a few levels, becomes boring. I am rejecting this for poor game choice.

I finally found the time to watch this movie. Obligatory yes vote for one of the best games of all times (though I still prefer the arcade version), a very entertaining speedrun. Nice work, x2poet. I, too, think a 100% version with the 7 big diamonds and the 3 secret worlds would be more entertaining. By the way:

I don't know very well how the NES version works, but in the Arcade version there is no luck involved. You get a big diamond if you collect the 7 small diamonds within a world. They are given if you kill an enemy via rainbow dropping (not direct rainbow killing) in each of the 7 vertical slices of the screen (e.g. x position from 0 to 36 pixels, from 37 to 72 pixels, ...). At least -- in the Arcade version. edit: I almost forgot, suggested screenshot, from level 4-4 (probably the best level in the movie): (from Youtube, not an actual screenshot)

NES also use dropping rainbow to kill the enemy for collecting diamond. The colour of the diamond is also decided by the x-position of enemy. If I can use 2 players in Arcade version,I have no doubt to select that rom,but not. This is not worse than that,at least the music is good.
Do the work.

This nico's run is 100%, and he use the J rom. But he can't get the 8th big diamond, the 8th diamond is not very necessary. http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm6194864
