history Metal Slug - Super Vehicle-001 (c) 1996 Nazca.
A scrolling 'run-and-gun' platform game for one or two players, Metal Slug is a humorous parody of war and specifically of World War II and the Nazis.
The game features six enemy-packed levels, referred to as 'missions'. Players start the game armed only with a pistol, but extra weapons can be picked up and used for greater firepower. Also, at certain points during a level players will find an unused 'Super Vehicle-001' - or Metal Slug - tank which can be entered and driven. The Metal Slug is slow-moving but has very powerful weapons. If the Slug takes too many hits it will break down and start to flash, the player must then quickly exit the vehicle before it explodes. The enemy troops also have vehicles at their disposal, such as tanks, boats and helicopters.
The levels are littered with bearded hostages who, when rescued, award players with either points bonuses (in the form of medals) or weapon power-ups. Available weapons are Heavy Machine Gun, Flame Shot, Rocket Launcher and Shotgun. Hand grenades are also available.
Each level ends with at least one large enemy 'Boss' vehicle that takes many hits to destroy. Once the boss has been destroyed, bonus points are awarded for each prisoner rescued. Further bonus points are awarded if the player's Metal Slug vehicle has survived the boss battle.

Summary

MISSION 1 Get Shortgun and Mechinegun to fight with boss. Jumping over tank to avoid another tank and control the dropping place.
MISSION 2 Gun and Bombs are enough.
MISSION 3 Gun and Bombs are enough.Manipulate luck to get shortgun and mechinegun.
MISSION 4 Getting Shortgun and mechinegun.Bombs are too many.
MISSION 5 There is not many guns can be used.So dying player-1 2 lives for the dying in the MISSION 6.
MISSION 6 Add coin this time.If player-1 not die.One more group of the enemies' soldiers will climb down. Shortguns are not enough to reach the boss.The mechine gun won't disappear for waiting such a long time in metal slug 1. Hitting boss and control the way he go.
End this movie.

This does not get the good ending. Using death as a shortcut, is not really acceptable in this kind of game. It cheapens the run if you ask me. Plays at level 8 which is the max level. It's quite impressive in terms of playing up to the point where the player dies on purpose to get the continue for heavy machine gun. Then it's not so impressive. I will say Meh. I want to say yes, but get the good ending (hit the boss after he falls from the chopper) and don't use continues.
When TAS does Quake 1, SDA will declare war. The Prince doth arrive he doth please.

Who set this rule for this game?Who knows? I set the target for this game and complete it.What's wrong? Death was inextricably linked with continue.They both aid to save time. For the fastest version.Neither of them would be ignored,otherwise it is not the fastest.

I said that I will make a no damage version for this run for people in this forum who want. But I will use the same method in Metal Slug X.Because I have very important reasons for continues.That related a lot of improvements and entertainments.Only who do this movie knows why.And I will list out them in my submission.I wished that I had not deleted the copy files that I can show the run by no death in Metal Slug X. If this one is not acceptable.Someone will have the same reason vote no in my X.Because they don't believe my word and stick on their unwise decision.

It seems most of people want a new rule for Arcade Games, but i think it would be unfair. Nobody is playing on Arcade, the same way nobody is playing on Snes, Sega Genesis, Master System... Everybody is playing on Emulator and the rules, as far as i know is for all games. Tons of games use death/damage as a shortcut/time saver. I think most people still think this is the original Arcade where we used to see people loosing lives and we thought "Noob!!! I can beat the game with just one credit/life!" or somebody say "Man, i managed to beat the game with just 2 coins!" and we say "That's not big deal, i can beat it with just one!".

People who think continue cannot be used just means that they are mean to the money for coins. If the rule limited that it cannot take death,damage or continue on the arcade,that means all the no damage,no death,no continue run will obsolete the run use death to save time.Only because Arcade's life need money. did the 1p die in this run means that I only can finish it only by using 2p?

Basically, I am against using deaths in this game. Like I said to Atma, it affects the entertainment in a negative way. Anyway, I look forward to any future Metal Slug X runs from you. I've said this a few times before, I would have gladly improved my own run if it weren't for shitty Finalburn Alpha. Even I have to draw the line when it comes to having patience for an emulator.

Your word just means this game is just for entertainment and not for fast time. I agree death kill the entertainment in this movie,but I disagree death kill entertainment in Metal Slug X,however,death improve the entertainment in X,but nobody believe me without my experiment showen. This one is only for the time. Why so many differect opinions between this game and others?Because it is a nice game.

I acknowledge that you aimed for fastest time. You used deaths to achieve that. I am saying that doing that affected the entertainment. Many runs use death as a shortcut. Often, visually they are appeasing to the viewers. In my opinion, in this case, that is not the case. Entertainment and speed are intertwined into each other, remember that.

To clarify my objection to publishing this run, using deaths is fine to me as a category. The thing that makes this run seem like a cheated run, is the fact of feeding coins mid-game. An emulator has an unlimited amout of coins and using them costs you nothing, so it's nothing but a cheat to me.

Since this run will most likely be rejected, I guess future speedruns will be forced to be slower. Also, when will this debate on the use of continues end? I can't find anywhere in the rules that all arcade games must use 1 coin only, unless of course, the rules have been changed since I last read them.=p

If continue is not allowed,Metal Slug X run would be limited,and it will kill a large entertainments.So are the other games by using continue which have a shortcut to die. Who set the rule that we play the arcade only can feed 1 or 2 coins? If limited to 1,two players run is not meaningful because it is like what you called "cheat",because adding the fire is unfair to using 1 coin.

X2poet, your objections to people disliking your use of continues have been noted. The way this video stands, quite a few people have voiced opinions against this movie, and against the use of continues in arcade games. This alone makes it hard to accept this movie. You can continue arguing your point, but it appears a large percentage of people dislike the use of death in metal slug games. The votes alone make it hard to judge this movie favorably.

X2poet, do you think it's possible to shave some more frames by using more coins? Like maybe in earlier levels as well as in mission 6.

Couldn't care less about whether extra credits are used or not, what I care about that nobody can be arsed to sacrifice a few extra frames to turn blood on so everyone doesn't bleed spooge which makes the game looks retarded.

If the TAS were playaround or "speedrun with entertainment tradeoffs", sure. But since it's targeted as pure speedrun, unused coins are nothing but missed opportunities. I asked the author about effectiveness of coins-feeding, so that I'll be able to base my vote on something more or less objective.

I also think death kill the entertainment in Metal Slug 1,if you like no death,I will make it.But Metal Slug X,no death in the train will make it more foolish that will have bad influence just like the time "Fat Getting Thin","waitng the player hitting the iron door","rough boss battle",not only in 5-2 but also in 5-3.

In X I think there's plenty of entertainment to be had watching the players shoot down an incoming train with their pistols. And would the rest of the stage really be that much slower? You replace your weapons when you enter the area after the trains, and the Slug's twin machineguns should be only slightly less powerful than grenades against the boss, right?

Yes,you are right.It will be 800 more frames slower only in 5-2.This is not the only reason. Using pistal to hit the last door in 5-2,it cannot reach the farthest right,because when the door is destroyed,you cannot have movement.And You cannot it destroy before you reach by using pistal,and there are some enemies' soldiers in front of the door. And 5-3,if no death in the train,you will wait the Fat player getting Thin,lack of time hitting the first door.The first iron door,using mechine gun may make the jump smoothly. Second iron door,use some bombs hitting the door to control the position jumping on the Frameshot. Two frameshots,The tank before boss battle,if not hit it on the top of it,more tanks will appear.This cost some frameshot. In the boss battle,I tried many different experiments without what you see. 1.Using 1 frameshot and the 10 bombs in robot. 2.Using 1 frameshot and 5 bombs in the robot and give up it. 3.Using 1 frameshot and 6 bombs in the robot and give up it. 4.Using 1 frameshot and give up the robot at first and pick two R.That is still not enough to beat the boss.And it is in Level 4. 5.Using 2 frameshots and give up the robot at first.If not use bombs,it is not enough to beat it. 6.Using 2 frameshots and use the robot' 2 bombs. 7.3 bombs. 8.All 4-10 bombs. 9.At first give up the robot and use normal bombs 1 or more. 10.At first give up the robot and only hit it by frameshot,that is also not enough. ...... And more on it,not only you see in the screen.How many efforts I paid to trying making the final decision.Continue in metal slug X will get more entertainment and improvement.Especially the member changing which is not related to save time. And metal slug 1,I also do some experiments in the mission 5 and 6. 1.get 2 mechine gun before the boss in 5. 2.Always hit the position that can take damage on boss. 3.Using slug to the end. 4.Getting the first bomb at Mission 6 boss battle. 5.Get the slug to the boss 6...... I forget some of them I tryed. You see I finish a movie in a short time.But you are wrong.I do many movies together,and keep the entertaining heart on this.And this one was planned before Metal Slug X.

Here is one argument against the people who say "using continues is not god like". Think of it this way, this "god like" player CHOOSE to use continues at his/her convenience aka whenever he/she feels like it. It wasn't a mistake continue. It was an intended one. He/she choose it in order to beat the game faster. The fact a continue was use does not make it any less god like since this god like player intentionally meant for it.

Maybe to you. What might be more entertaining to you is not more entertaining to everyone, and assuming that your way is the most entertaining method while dismissing everyone elses opinions is senseless. I am outright telling you that I would find a nodeath TAS of Metal Slug more entertaining than one that uses continues, regardless of the time saved.
