Is getting one of the "Through the Jet Stream" stars without Metal Cap considered a glitch? What about getting up the sand drifts that are supposed to be too steep, for a quick complation on something like Shining Atop the Pyramid? Those are probably more illustrative of having to draw the line somewhere.

Still... What's a glitch? Is BLJing at turbo speed a glitch?
Tell me you are jokeing... Obviously, right?
No. The programmers knew that with long jumping, you speed up, and they must have known about stairs, but they decided to leave in the code. So arguably it's not a glitch.

it's a glitch because in mario 64 for Wii's virtual console they have fixed that. edit: really, jweb guru? I could swear i read somewhere that it was fixed.

What? No they haven't, I was able to pull it off the other day, so unless they changed something within the last week it's quite doable. Edit: That said, it's obviously a glitch. There's no way it was intended for Mario to be able to clip through walls, get to Bowser early, etc.

I seem to remember that it's possible to get infinite coins on bowser fights due to his flame breath. It's been several years but I remember screenshots of people with over a 1,000 coins in bowser fights alone
That's possible only in the Japanese version. In the American version the coin counter stops at 999.

Also, on some sub-courses, such as Tower of the Wing Cap, it's actually impossible to collect all of the coins in one go.
That's not true. :P Watch this video made by DigiLuigi (it's very bad quality, but it's enough proof that it's possible to get all 63 coins in one go): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8s9BvHq6gA BTW, the all-coins run would need more than just 16 stars... For example, in BoB the Koopa Troopa appears only after you get the first two stars from the course, and in JRB you can't get all the red coins without the ship being afloat. Also, in LLL you don't get to use the Koopa Shell until you get the first four stars; not using the shell would make the coin collecting much slower. I'm looking forward to this run, but there are some little details that need to be corrected. ;)

Yeah, it's the original unmodified rom. I've done most of the glitches possible to do in real-time on my VC version of SM64. Also super mario bros on VC still has the world -1 glitch, so nintendo doesn't change the roms of many vc games.....

*jaw drops open* I've never seen that... Well, that can change things... I have no problem bumping it up to 2672 coins by including EVERY coin.

Yeah, I would actually go for both high scores and "cleaning out" the levels of their coins. So you would collect every coin that is normally produced in every level, even the special levels. But then in any of the main levels where there's a duplication trick, you would fill in the total to 255 with duplicated coins to get a perfect score. Except I can't decide how many coins to get from Bowser's flames...

I know I don't want to see him wait around for 999 coins fom Bowser, but the rest of it sounds very fun, I remember trying to do this on my 64 and getting really pissed at the tiny goombas... although I think I did actually complete it eventually. Wish I had my cart with me to check. But anyway, I say it's a novel idea, and if any game is worth of having 4 published runs, Mario64 is certainly it.

Erm, I dunno about getting 255 coins from every level where it's possible (it might get pretty boring and un-entertaining), but I think the entire coin collection is a good idea. It would be completely different from all the other Mario TASes; even the Bowser levels (which are the same in 16 star and CCC and similar in 120 star) would be radically different. Like I said, I thought it would be a good idea to get one infinite coin from each level where possible, so: 1 Chuckya glitch in WDW 1 Moneybags glitch in SL 1 Piranha Plant glitch in THI As well as: 1 box glitch in BoB 2 box glitches in WF That's what I can remember.

One infinite coin? That doesn't even make sense. It's like, you get this exploit, but you're all like "I'm only exploiting in moderation! I am not getting the intended high score, but I am not getting the real high score either!" It's like, you're having and eating your cake, but not enough cake to fill satisfaction!

Okay, then maybe just the glitched coins from the boxes?

makes sense to me, doing them all once to show the tricks, but not maxing out, unless boredom can be avoided. I wonder what Rikku plans for his next project, maybe he is willing to do this coin collecting task =) someone could start thinking about routes / strategies and such for the time being :p

If I recall correctly some Stars are going to have to be collected in levels before Hi-Coin scores can be achived. For example in Stage one does the Koopa Troopa only appear when you select acts 3-6 at the level entry? (ie after beating Koopa the Quick.) Also for what its is worth would love to see this run in whatever form it eventually comes out as.

Yep, I'd collect whatever stars necessary to make all coins available.

Exactly; every non-infinite coin in the game (so probably no Chuckya, no coins under the bridge outside of the castle, etc). EDIT: Then again, I could get the two under the bridge after coming from VCUtM. The four coins in the Lobby would all be collected at least once from Lobby Glitching. If that were to happen, then, yes, every coin (except Chuckya, piranha, etc).

Once again, amazing. Sweet collectioning of the red coins both times. But what happened on the red coin star? Why did it stop in the air? D:

Looked good, although wouldn't it have been faster to delay the jump to the red coin star for a few frames so you could buttslam under it?

Ten stars left: Rainbow ride, the last bowser star, the last toad star, and the red coins in the clouds star. Very impressive
