FCE Ultra 0.98.12
Warpfull version
Bugs: I found two ways to pass through walls
  • 1: pass through wall from a corner: you must run and fall at top speed and have a good pixel alignment
  • 2: pass through a wall if the ceiling is reachable: you must run lean before jumping, you must begin to fall before reaching the wall and you must be just under the ceiling
No hit/No death
Aims: Fastest as possible and maximum score
  • score = 364270
  • life = >99
  • coin = 54
Description: in this movie, I show you these bugs and some other cool moves. I don't follow the road in the last stage because I pass through any wall which I see lol!!

Phil: Note that the movie may desync due to some random timings in FCEU when playing that game. Retry playing the movie until it is ok.

19 seconds faster yes but a lot of it is because of screen transitions being faster on USA version
Indeed. But still, all levels except maybe the autoscrollers and 8-2 were faster than in the previous version.

I don't think it does 1 second faster because of that + FCEU lags where Famtasia doesn't lag at some places.

because of what?

the US version of mario 3 saves 55 frames for each transition. counting levels 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, fortress, tank, ship, pipe, flying ship, pipe, 8-1, 8-2, fortress, pipe, tank, castle that will give a 16 x 55 = 880 frames of difference because of transitions, which seems to be the only difference. add 880 to the final frame count to know the total improvement. (880 frames ~= 14,666 seconds)
someone said that the text are longer in the US version, but i dont think it is 13 seconds longer, so more than 1 second was saved by using the US version

Great run. An amazing improvement in a game that started my (and I'm sure a lot others) watching on speedruns. At that time I was certain that no improvements could be done, just like I thought about Rygar (warp). :)

For some strange reason I must echo Bisqwit's sentiments ... Watching this video was more disappointing than anything else. I'm hard pressed to give any reason why, though, since a 19 second improvement is astonishing in concept. Maybe it just didn't seem clean to me, or perhaps there are just so many times I can watch those autoscrolling levels before I get bored of the game entirely.

Probably because you wered bored before watching it?? Personally, I think it's better than precedent version.

Could it be a case of Speed vs Aesthetics, where aesthetics would be more desirable? Bowser’s castle was a huge improvement in both sense, but as for the rest of the run, I don’t think people would mind a few frames slower if you fit in more wall tricks and better looking plays. I agree with Deviance about Mario jumping into the clouds to start off his run. That was the first thing that Wowed me when first seeing Morimoto’s clip. The new run is nice, but just some thoughts.

I liked this movie, but I agree that the autoscrolling levels are not that exciting anymore. From an objective perspective, I think they were all improved but the fast-scrolling flying ship. I (and the people I watched it with) liked how Mario stayed unhealthily far to the right of the screen. I hope this will be reverted in the next version. Also the flying to the clouds was fun, but I can let that go if the new version is faster. Besides, it's fun to see how you can keep your running speed while stopping (hmm...). Overall I don't like the goal of maximizing points. (Which is also a contradiction of maximizing extra lives.) Better just go for kills. On a completely positive note, I really liked the usage of fireballs in 8-2.

I tried playing this fmv several times already and it keeps desyncing. The fireball keeps missing Boom Boom at the end of airships (the level just before 8-1). Do I just need to keep watching it over and over until it plays correctly, or is there something else I need to do?

I think you have the wrong ROM. It does that with PRG 0.

I downloaded the AVI instead of the movie file. My Windows Media Player (v10) is refusing to find/download the codec on its own, and I only get the audio playing. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I'm downloading the AVI now since the FCM file kept desynching for me (just curious, does anybody know why this happens, technically)? Also, I must say that the submission description is one of the most boring that I've read on this site.

I noticed the metadata in the .fcm file had been cut for reducing the file size. That's my experience, FCE Ultra has desyn problem related with the metadata. So do not cut or modify them maybe a good idea. Since the file has already been re-sized, if the desyn happened at the same critical frames, you can do a emu savestate before it and then load the savestate to continue the run. Hope that can do a little help. Edit I suggest everone dont modify or cut the metadata.

This sounds strange -- superstitious at best... For clarification, this movie, and my Rockman movie, have been through nesmock a couple of times. It converts FCM to FMV or FMV to FCM. In the conversion, it deletes redundant data from the file. Including the savestate, because we handle only reset-based movies here. But it shouldn't delete the metadata (movie title). Even if it did, it shouldn't affect the playback at all.

Maybe I was confused. I meant savedata not metadata ? The data except movie title and keypress.

Even then, it sounds superstitious.

Though not technically a trick, an odd chime can be heard when a player gets 30 1-ups in a row by bouncing on enemies. This would be a nice little thing to throw into the movie, it seems, in those scrolling levels where you can't control the speed and are getting plenty of lives anyway. Something to think about?

How many lives to you get in a row there? It must be pretty close to 30, but yeah, it doesn't sound really easy and since it doesn't save time..

Is it really caused by getting 30 1ups in row? I've heard it in regular playing and I haven't really often got 30 1ups in row (I've only done it in 1-2, but I recall hearing it in other levels too).
