recorded with nitsuja's mupen64 rerecording v8 found here: Forum/Topics/2934
16-minute 16-star playthrough of the first and one of the most versatile, action oriented 3-D games for the N64.
This tool-assisted movie is over a minute faster than the original test run, and takes many shortcuts favorable over the original ones. Most of the saved time is an accumulation of bits and pieces of optimization through Mario's movement and straighter paths to whatever destination.
What was very fortunate was that I was able to record with an analog stick, thus making radial positioning much more precise and ultimately making many pathways faster.
Thanks to Micheal Fried, Weatherton, nitsuja, Atma, and GeminiSaint for the useful strategies.
Abuses glitches. Takes damage to save time.

Bisqwit: Updated this submission as well (the movie length was calculated in wrong way).

Hi, I need some help getting the m64 file to playback in mupen... First of, the playback says it needs a rec file, not a m64 file, when I try to load the file as a rec, it says "couldn't start playback", and that's it, no logs no nothing else... When I change the file to a m64, it says 'the wrong save...' it's cut off soon after. I'm using Mupen 0.5.1 for XP. Thanks for any help.

Try using nitsuja's improved mupen64 rerecording version. It's the only mupen64 that plays .m64 files.

First of all OMG!! Super sweet, dude! I was just talking about this game with a friend a while ago and this just really made my day. However, while this may have been addressed already, you can save time when you break away the wall from the cannon by breaking the wall and landing right on the star.

FODA has already found many ways to get those stars faster. Here's the topic, take a look at there ;)

Kicks: Just checked out your page...dude, your college has a fighting game club? Holy crap that is fricken sweet. Don't play much anymore, but I could type up some stuff for 3s if you guys want...I can explain basic and advanced techs for almost all the characters (Urien's about the only one I don't really know much). Oro especially, as he was my main character... Just wanted to see if you'd be interested. =) Thanks, Josh.
but then you take my 75 perchance chance of winning, if we was to go one-on-one, and then add 66 and two-thirds ch...percents...i got a 141 and two-thirds chance of winning at sacrifice

I've made this video available on youtube and google videos. Google video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6493722340610946105 youtube: http://youtube.com/watch.php?v=fJ7RfTl7jYc Sorry if I messed up with the credit giving... :-[
Any chance you could modify the video information on the google video link to point out that it's a emulator/tool assisted run, like you did on the youtube link? It'd reduce the amount of people thinking it's a non-tool assisted run. EDIT: oops :P Thanks for pointing that out, DeHackEd.

.. Looks fine to me. On a partially related note, I put this movie on archive.org for direct HTTP downloading. That way you can watch it on a proper movie player and not a CPU-guzzling piece of crap flash plugin.

K, I've just seen this video and have to ask. Could this be done on a console and is there anyway of doing this without tools besides the recording one of course?

yes it has been done similarly by speedrunners (18 minutes movie i believe). Repeating this exactly is possible, but unlikely because it involve precise control.

The "this is tool asissted" disclaimer? It doesn't show up until control is gained, after Princess blah blahs her letter and Lakitu wastes some more time.

Yeah, the first part shows up when Lakitu appears, and then the second part shows when Mario starts yahooing to the castle.

Wow, just WOW. I used to play the hell out of this game when I first got my N64 a few days after it was released, and this TAS just blew me away. I had a huge grin on my face while watching this and was completely dumbfounded seeing some of the stunts pulled off in this run. This run is probably my #1 on this site because it is so unbelievable and entertaining. :)

Wait'll you see what FODA is doing in the 120star run. (See the Mario64 thread in the N64 games section).

Oh thanks for the heads up or I might not have seen it! I think the highest I ever got during normal play was 116 or 117, and that took quite a while. lol

I heard Foda won't give out partial runs of it anymore so people can't tell him to improve things until it's all done.

I can't say anymore about this than what's already been said, but why is it that you press Start and then that's it? Don't we get to see the credits?
