hmmmm that savestate tree could be interesting, but it has to have some limitations, like you need to especifically create another branch with some hotkey, or else it can go branch crazy

Im having major desyncs when I try to playback a movie with 3 players. I have done everything necessary to record the movie, the opening and menus are fine, but once I'm able to control the player, it pauses. I'm also having problems with making the movie. I'm not able to press A+B+C using frame advance (this is needed to switch players).

The ABC problem sounds like a keyboard problem. I don't think the keyboard supports so much key pressed at once. A solution would be to use a game controller. Or one way to hack it out would be to make a special key bound to all 3 buttons at once. As for the desync problems, I will investigate. Edit : Found a problem with playback of 3 players movies. Shouldn't affect anything else.

I found (through the show button input) that X+Y+Z is possible, but not A+B+C. Thanks for your help. EDIT: Actually, that's wrong. You can press A+B+C. Just only on the 1st player. Maybe it has to do with the 6-button configuration? EDIT2: Hmm. It seems the 3rd player is able to press A+B+C also.

Have you tried moving the 2nd player's keys around?

Some keyboards don't allow too many buttons in the same area to be pressed at the same time. I guess it's to keep fat people from making too many typos or something. Example: my keyboard used to not allow me to use LA or RB combonations with VBA since I use the set up L-A R-S A-Z B-X. Once I shifted L and R up to Q and W, I was able to use the LA and RB button press combos.

I'm sorry to report another bug. When I was player 1, the XYZ buttons wouldn't record to the .gmv. As I was recording, it would perform the action, but once I played it back, it didn't. Another thing, what nifboy said about remapping the 6-button configuration to whichever viking is player 1 isn't happening. I'm not able for player 2 or 3 to use the XYZ buttons( even if they're player 1 at the moment), which are essential for completing Lost Vikings with 3 players.

Er, no, that's not quite what I meant. I mean the game's controls are different based on whether you have a 3-button or 6-button controller. And from what I can tell the 3-player mode only works properly with three 3-button controllers.

Hmm. That's not good to hear. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

New version released. It's not a new file format (still backward compatible with the first release, except for 3 player support). The 3rd player take the place used by XYZ keys of Player 1/2. The file format switch will come with Gens 3 (with 8 player support)
Ouzo, you cannot use more than 3 buttons when using 3 players mode, since that's (X,Y,Z) where the third player commands are stocked. you'll have to wait for the next "official" version. Jyzero, I guess that we'll have to wait for that version to have the SMS support and that you'll implement the rerecord feature ? or is it already based on the gens/gir format ? I'm a bit lost with those versions... http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2363 sorry, I might be biaised since I think SMS support would be much more interesting than 3 player support :)

I would like to implement the GIR format right now but unless Gens 3 is released, I can't be sure the spec i'll be using will be official. I'l try to contact the official Gens dev team, but I may hit a wall.

You can, in fact, play the game with a three button controller. The intro levels will instruct you differently based on the controller you have - switching vikings in one-player mode with a 3-button pad, for example, is accomplished by holding start and pressing left or right on the d-pad. Start by itself goes into inventory selection. Hope that helps.

Wow. Never bothered to read the "?" buttons. Thanks a lot! BTW, are you sure it's "start+d-pad"? It doesn't work for me. A+B+C switches players in 3-player format.

I may have been misremembering, but I do believe in 1-player mode start+L/R switched vikings. It's possible that A+B+C is used in two or three player mode in order to change focus from one viking to another - I know in the SNES version of the game, there were different controls to switch between vikings as well as switch focus to a different player.

I just tried it. Works with 1 and 2 player, but not with 3.

Small bug report: - The teamplayer/pad settings effects the timing of the movie and should be included in the movie file. As should the other 6 controllers. The Lost Vikings movie in progress desyncs with the wrong settings. - The second/third player still isn't shown in the 'show input' field. I can understand if you withhold updating until Gens 3 is released... I really hope it will be soon.

Me too. I just really want a emulator that has the rerecord function for the SMS format.

If you are terribly desperate you could always use DrSMS to convert SMS ROMs to GBA ROMs and then use Visual Boy Advance. It would also be pretty entertaining to have a twice emulated movie on the site.

Erm.. I just thought of something... Would it be possible to sort of "bake" save states into the GMV for the possibility to rewind and fast forward? Well.. Fast forward is no problem since there is Frame skip. But say I wanna jump 20min into the movie and I don't have a save state like it works today, what could I do to jump 20min into the movie?

The only advantage of an AVI movie over GMV (or any other emulator movie) is the "seek" possibility. Would be REALLY good to have some "keyframes" (like mpeg movies), so we can rewind/forward to them. Savestates, however, are big, a lot of data must be saved. We need a way to solve this (compress all data in a save state before embedding in movie?). Maybe put all savestates together and compress them all in one (to archieve better compress rates).

I like the sound of those compressed save states.
