This thread reminds me of an experience I had similar to the topic creator's. All I could remember about the game was that it was some kind of SNES 3-D shooter (ala Star Fox), the first level had lots of colorful blocks, and the top and bottom halves of the screen mirrored each other. I finally remember its name (Hyperzone) after watching a speed run of it.

I also used to wake up every morning, open my curtains, and see the twin towers. And then one day, wasn't able to anymore, I'll never forget that.

I think the Atari 2600 game I was looking for was Mega Force, though I should double-check to make sure.

Hmm... along a similar vein, there was a game, for the Genesis I believe, where you played four different character's quests (no particular order). And all I remember is the yellow character's quest involved a boss battle with a machine/tank that had an antenna on its top and when you broke it he started shooting enormous lasers out of its front. Anyone know what game it is?
An update on this, I managed to figure it out, it was Bucky O'Hare. Turns out I had the system wrong.

Is the OP even alive
"Genuine self-esteem, however, consists not of causeless feelings, but of certain knowledge about yourself. It rests on the conviction that you — by your choices, effort and actions — have made yourself into the kind of person able to deal with reality. It is the conviction — based on the evidence of your own volitional functioning — that you are fundamentally able to succeed in life and, therefore, are deserving of that success." - Onkar Ghate
