FractalFusion: The restriction "without spindash" is too arbitrary in this case. It doesn't appear to give the impression of TAS quality, and there is nothing really notable about the restriction (unlike the SMB walkathon where glitches were required to complete the game). I'm rejecting the run.

Mix-and-match of branches is an very bad idea; it gets into arbitrary goal choice territory. If there is demand for a 100%, it should be only a 100%, not a 100% combined with this.

Is it just me or does this run desync at Wing Fortress? Tried US and Japanese modes but both desync. It is nice to see something unique.

It desyncs on REV00 but works on REV01: Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (W) (REV01) [!].gen

Honestly? If this run gets accepted, I see no reason why a run of Sonic 1 with Spindash capabilities hacked in couldn't be accepted. It'd probably use similar strategies to the other hacks of Sonic 1, but without the useful ability to Super-Mario-World-Cape-Gimp the majority of levels. If this gets accepted, I say that someone should attempt that next. That said, as my actual opinion on this, I'm really not sure...I haven't watched it yet, but the idea both intrigues and disturbs me. I really don't know how it'll work. I'll probably wait for an encode first.
This is only a little obsessive.

this run is fairly entertaining, and much more optimized then your first submitted version of this run. but there are still a lot of minor (and a few more major) improvements. for instance on several occasions you seem to jump at full speed, or jump into a low ceiling which doesn't give you much benefit. every time you jump sonic completely stops moving for a frame, so even jumping into a ceiling may not be worth it at high speeds (I think with a speed of over 1100 or so jumping is never worth it) theres also a couple missed glitches, like the CN1 zip and the AR2 boss glitch. @sgrunt, I'm pretty sure the emerald hill and death egg bosses can't be beaten with out spindash with out gaps in hitting him. and the oil ocean route looks alright to me. @mike the published run doesn't use a spindash by the springboard in AR2, so I'm almost certain the lower route would be faster. also I didn't notice the breaking, but usually breaking a few frames before hitting the flag won't make you lose time. finally I think the optimized routing for this run would be pretty close to an optimized run with spindashes, which makes this category less apealing. I'm voting meh.

Still need to watch the run, but I'm currently favoring voting no. TASes get better and more entertaining as the game lets the player showcase more diverse abilities. Sometimes one ability is strictly better than another and the "worse" one ends up being sub-optimal. In these cases, a run with restrictions is more entertaining, because it ends up adding more variety to the run (think S3&K without underflow). If this was done in Sonic3&K, I'd totally approve of this, since we would see more creative shield and Tails usage. However, here, all it does is remove one tool from the player. It seems backwards in my eyes. My vote in the end will come down to if this run is Much more entertaining than the original one or not. EDIT:*would, since I can't vote...

Damn freaking right I Yes voted, that was brilliant! Obligationary HD encode coming up when SMB3 finishes. Edit: And thanks to Alexra's Quad Core beast, this'll be encoded in SD. Edit 2: Ignore the encode thing... I screwed up, bad.

I vote yes. It is similar to the "no B button" SMB run. The routes were done well in the zones. He obviously knew what he was doing.

Sonic 2 badly needs an update, and this run at least incorporates some of the new stuff that has been discovered. comments: why didn't you choose to use tails in the run? he makes the run more interesting and also helps out with like the eh2 boss. haven't seen the normal cp2 route in forever, forgot how stupid it is. without a spindash this looks like a more human run and less tas like :-\ lol edit sorry for pre-emptively voting yes after being very excited watching it once, i got :52 seconds unassisted on aquatic ruin 2 using the water route on my 1st try with no spindashes (TAS got 53...)... this has to be an instant rejection based solely on that.

I feel obligated to vote no in light of probable improvements to AR2 and possible improvements in a few other places as previously outlined by mike89 and myself. I would be interested in seeing a more optimised version of this run, however.

Yea i think this category might have merits... I think a run with the goal of having the least amount of jumps/least amount of rings(there are a lot of spots where you need to bring enemies over to damage boost you to avoid jumping) might be interesting to me but would be slow and probably others wouldn't get why its impressive. also there are a ton of areas where you have to jump obviously. But many might just view this as slow and pointless.

Is there a particularly good reason to restrict the run to be without spindashes? "More like Sonic 1" is not a good reason. We are with the knowledge that the player can and is expected to use spindash, and that spindash is what makes the current Sonic 2 and S3&K runs entertaining.

"..and that spindash if what makes the current Sonic 2 and S3&K runs entertaining." I'd be careful about throwing the word "know" around here. More like "this is my opinion", I would say.

No, those runs aren't entertaining, because Sonic goes too fast in them.

Are human skills just enough for this run?
<klmz> it reminds me of that people used to keep quoting adelikat's IRC statements in the old good days <adelikat> no doubt <adelikat> klmz, they still do
