Forum Rules

The rules

These are the rules of the TASvideos discussion forums. Most of this stuff is common sense, but as we all know, not everyone is endowed with much of that common sense.

It is mandatory for everyone to read these rules before posting at the TASvideos forums.

Breaking these rules will lead to consequences varying between ignoring the incident to permanently banning the offending user from the site, depending on the magnitude of the offense and the mood of the moderator.

To stay civilized

Language

The language on this board is English.
Posting in other languages is allowed, but all discussions should be at least translated to English.

If you write (a response) to a person who does not handle English as well as you do, please refrain from using idioms that do not translate well (hint: try interpreting them literally). This includes expressions like "give a hand" (help), "break a leg" (good luck), and deceitful styles of speech such as sarcasm.

Post content

The posting is encouraged to stay civilized. This means that flaming, trolling, insults and acts of retaliation are not allowed. If you are angry to someone, it is recommended to wait for 24 hours before responding.

Spamming and other selfish advertising is not allowed.

Advertising is allowed only if it provides something (valuable) to discussion.
The moderators reserve the right to delete posts that are deemed as advertising.
The administration deletes accounts that were created only for the sole purpose of advertising.

Please try to concentrate posting encouraging posts and not discouraging posts. Do not bash newbies for their lack of knowledge. Pointing out a FAQ is helpful, but turning it into a mockfest is counterproductive.

Please try to make your posts worth reading. Do not quote for truth, great justice or teh lulz without expanding on your point and providing some amount of additional commentary.

Please do not mislead readers with your posts. Do not "fix" quotes by changing what the original author wrote.

Decorating your appearance (posts, signatures, avatars)

The focus on every post should be your message. This means that overly big signatures (more than 3 lines), graphical signatures, signatures and avatars that distract from the posting (such as graphical advertisements or bbcode abuse) or overly big avatars (larger than 100 pixels in width or height) are not allowed.

The administration reserves the right to delete users' signatures or avatars at their discretion.

Using the bbcode elements, such as colours, emphasis and fonts, is allowed, but in an civilized way that improves the understanding of the message. It is usually recommended to not use them.

Registering users

Each user is allowed to register one (1) account on these forums. Registering multiple accounts is not allowed.

If you need to change your username, contact Bisqwit. If you forgot your password, contact Bisqwit.

Multiple users may not share the same account. Accounts are personal.

Passwords

Weak passwords are not allowed. A weak password opens a possibility for someone to crack into your account and impersonate you, posting messages in your name, possibly leading to the banning of your account.

The administration reserves the right to probe the accounts once in a while to see if someone has an easily guessable password. This probing is done confidentially. Users who have a weak password will receive a private message asking them to change their password, and a week of time to do it. If they don't take action, their account will be terminated.

"Weak" is a relative term. The password strength meter listed in profile and registration is a rough guideline, not a rule. Use your head when deciding on a password.

¤Examples of weak passwords: qqq, asdfasdf, <username>123, <username backwards>

To stay legal

ROM requests are not allowed. This also applies to private messages.

Posts that contain pointers to copyrighted material (such as ROMs, warez) or to pornography, or to any sites that endorse illegal activities, are not allowed.

The moderators reserve the right to edit your posts if they contain links or mentions of such sites.

To stay coordinated

Submitting movies

If you want us to publish your movie on the TASvideos site, you must submit it at http://bisqwit.iki.fi/nesvideos/SubmitMovie.html. This is the only way the movie can be published at the main page.

WIP movies (work in progress)

The TASvideos forums offer a place for people to discuss movies they are developing. It is recommended for people to start a thread in the relevant forum about the game they are playing and post samples of their progress for others to comment on.

Do not use the movie submission mechanism for this purpose.

Resurrecting threads

We prefer having one thread per game, so that relevant information is kept in one place. It is preferred to reply to an old thread about a game (use the search function to see if there are any) instead of starting a new thread.

Do not resurrect irrelevant threads, for example questions that have already been answered or WIPs which the author has clearly abandoned.

Double-posting and editing posts

Double-posting about your progress is okay if some time has passed since your last post - one day is a good rule of thumb. People will not notice new content easily if you just edit your last post several times.

For other cases, correcting mistakes etc., you can edit your old posts.

Asking questions about movie files, emulators and so on

You are not allowed to ask questions that are already answered in the FAQ.

Read the FAQ. It provides answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

This applies to everyone, but especially to users who have never posted before!

Other

Requesting or asking for anyone to post messages that break these rules is not allowed.

Disclaimer

This text may change in the future to accommodate the needs.

Complaints

Complaining about the decisions made by moderators and the administration may either help or make the situation worse, depending on how you present it.
