Tool-assisted game movies
When human skills are just not enough

Mothrayas

Hello guest!

I am a 19-year old guy from the Netherlands. In my free time I like to work on TASes, among other things such as surfing the internet and playing video games. I especially like the Mega Man series. Therefore, most of my TAS projects are Mega Man-related. Since speedy Mega Man platforming is usually nice and entertaining to watch, this can only be a good thing.

On the 14th of May 2012, I was promoted to be a judge, primarily to help out with the stream of PSX submissions at the time.

On the 18th of June 2012, I was also promoted to be a forum moderator.

TODO: Update and revise userpage

Here, you can see all of my TAS projects. All information about my past, current (active and inactive) projects and future ideas can be seen here.

These are the tool-assisted speedruns that I made and got published on the site.

X seeks to find the lost Maverick Hunter Zero, who has gone missing since X5. Of course, once found, Zero does all the dirty work, while X is nowhere to be found.

This run completes all stages, as opposed to the any% level run. You can see how nasty every level is on Xtreme difficulty. As always, Zero is much better suited to killing bosses than X. Zero also uses powerups which he wouldn't be able to use in an any% run.

In an effort to avoid status quo, Capcom decided to experiment with this game, throwing in a leveling system and story-based launch scenarios. Beyond that, it's really just a Mega Man X game Zero game.

This game is the first Mega Man game to allow choosing, each stage, one of two playable characters, X or Zero. However Zero is judged as the greater of the two, so X is left behind gathering dust. The abuse-able sword physics points to Zero's superiority, especially when the sword is used while standing on the ground. Bosses fall very quickly, even when they have 127 health. The downside to Zero's sword is the delay when the sword hits in the air.

There is about 5 minutes of action in this run, which consists mostly of flying through levels and boss rush on the hardest difficulty mode, Xtreme.

This run is ~8 seconds faster than the previous run.

We also have a run which completes all stages.

Mega Man ZX Advent is the second game in the Mega Man ZX series. What's so different between the classic series and ZX Advent? First, you get to choose between a male (Grey) and a female (Ashe) character. Then, instead of stealing weapons from the bosses, the player steals the boss itself! Instead of switching between weapons, the player switches between forms using the Biometal Model A. Finally, the player has less freedom to pick the stages of his choice.

Mothrayas picks Ashe, the female character, to minimize the cutscenes and to save time.

To play the DSM file, make sure that "Enable Advanced Bus-Level Timing" is unchecked in the "Emulation settings".

Mega Man ZX is the first Mega Man platformer on the DS. It is also the first Mega Man game to have the choice of a male or female protagonist (the latter is used in this run). Unlike previous Mega Man series, this series features a new system where the protagonist is actually a humanoid who changes forms using different biometals (collected mostly from bosses).

Mega Man X3 is the third game in the Mega Man X series, and the last one to be released on the SNES.

This is the first "100%" run of this game. Mothrayas speeds through the game very rapidly, collecting all heart tanks, subtanks, Ride Armor modules, upgrades and finally the Golden Armor. However, Zero is kept alive and his Z-Saber is not obtained, so the author could get the best ending.

The page Mega Man X Tricks explains some of the tricks that are used in this tool-assisted speedrun.

See also the any% run of this game, which doesn't collect the upgrades but does collect the Z-Saber.

Spider-Man was the first game to feature the famous hero and also the first Marvel Comics-based video game. Here, Spider-Man must use his web shooters to scale a building and defuse bombs set atop it by the Green Goblin.

After a nasty frame war, this run ended up as the fastest one through this short game.

Mega Man Xtreme 2, like its predecessor game Mega Man Xtreme, pretty much copies content and bosses from the main line of Mega Man X games. While the first Xtreme title took its stage designs and bosses from just Mega Man X and Mega Man X2, Mega Man Xtreme 2 takes its stage designs and bosses from Mega Man X, Mega Man X2 as well as Mega Man X3, and also takes other elements from later Mega Man X titles including Mega Man X4 and Mega Man X5, such as a Parts shop, and the presence of Iris from Mega Man X4 (working as a navigator in this game).

Compared to the first Xtreme game, Mega Man Xtreme 2 does have more original content, though. It has an improved story (although it's still rather shallow) and unique fortress bosses (with the exception of Velguarder, Sigma's dog, who was taken from Mega Man X for the first fortress stage, and Sigma's first form which is taken from Mega Man X2) and it has mostly new stage designs that are not so much ripped straight from the SNES games. In fact, Neon Tiger and Blast Hornet's stages have more in common with Sting Chameleon and Storm Eagle's stages, respectively.

The most significant addition compared to either the SNES games or the first Xtreme game is that Zero is a fully playable character here for all our slashing needs. He plays a bit like Zero out of Mega Man Zero, but has animations like those from X4/X5 and X6. Zero can gain weapons from bosses like X can, including an obligatory uppercut slash and drill stab, but also other, more different moves such as a variant of Mega Man X's charged Fire Wave and boss moves like Wire Sponge's Lightning attack and Launch Octopus' homing fish attack. Just plain old slashing with the Z-Saber typically remains the most efficient tool, though.

The game has a Parts system like in Mega Man X5 and Mega Man X6, although it doesn't really have a lot of upgrades, much less useful ones. The only really useful ones, that are used in this speedrun, are the Buster +1 and +2 parts for X and Saber +1 and +2 for Zero. Stacking both upgrades for each character causes a significant damage boost for both characters, which saves a lot of time on boss fights.

Other than that, the gameplay of Mega Man Xtreme 2 is very similar to the first Xtreme game. It has similar pacing and glitching.

In this run, both X and Zero are used. Zero turns out superior early on, while X is faster in the middle part. The action then returns to Zero for the final couple of stages.

Rockman DX3, also known as Zook Hero 2, is an an unlicensed pirate game developed by V.Fame that rips gameplay off the Rockman X series. Just like Rockman X, there are eight stages, and six of them contain a boss who gives you his weapon upon defeat. The protagonist, Zook, also has abilities nearly identical to those of X. Despite these similarities, the code and graphics appear to be completely original and the music is actually decent.

The author, Mothrayas, plays the most popular and widely available release, which happened to be released with the final boss stage already unlocked, leading to the incredibly short completion time.

Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22 is a fighting game based on the Dragon Ball Z anime series. The "22" refers to the number of characters unlocked at the start of the game (a few more can be unlocked). The game was panned by critics and consumers alike because of its very poor overall quality.

The author, Mothrayas, uses Goku's ridiculously powerful crouching close punch move to deplete enemies' lifebars really quickly and defeat all 27 opponents in record time.

These are my submissions on the site that didn't make it for publication.

PSX Grand Theft Auto 2 in 00:37

Submitted on April Fools Day 2011, in between a large flood of poor submissions.

This submission is actually a rushed section of the GTA2 TAS I was working on at the time. For April Fools, I decided to instead kill the player character as fast as possible, "ending" the player character's adventure.

I cancelled it the next day.

PSX Grand Theft Auto 2 "kill 50 people" in 01:00

Also submitted on April Fools Day 2011.

In this one, I used cheats to unlock the final bonus stage, where the goal is to kill as many Hare Krishna as possible before the player dies or time runs out. The original plan was to get a maximum score, but due to time constraints, I stopped at 50 people.

Also cancelled the next day.

PSX Super Adventure Rockman in 1:17:56

My April Fools 2012 TAS, it is a full and complete run of Super Adventure Rockman - an interactive FMV game, released only in Japan.

Needless to say, it eventually got rejected due to poor game choice.

A2600 Spider-Man in 00:19.78

I originally submitted this as an improvement to adelikat's submission of the game (which I was judging). Then a few days later, it got improved by TehSeven's attempt of the game. Frame war, yay!

I will list the TAS projects I am working on, in order of priority. Projects higher in the list are the ones I'm most actively working on.

SGB Mega Man V

Author: adelikat & Mothrayas
Currently at: Jupiter stage (sixth stage)
Progress: ~55%
WIPs: See this forum topic.

My current other main TAS project.

Progress used to be tracked on this page, but I lost my SVN tools and I'm not going to set them back up yet.

These are projects that I have started on at some point, but never got around to finish them, and then eventually got abandoned.

For many of these, I intend to still pick them up at a future point in time. However, I can't be certain whether that will happen too.

Arcade Street Fighter 2

Author: Mothrayas
Currently at: Second fight
Progress: 8%
WIPs: See this thread.

Another project, aiming to create a diverse Street Fighter 2 TAS, showcasing many different glitches.

PSX Grand Theft Auto 2

Author: Mothrayas
Currently at: First mission
Progress: 0%
WIPs: None yet

Even though the game has BGM emulation issues, I'm starting this anyway.

Currently trying to decide whether to use outdated PCSX or PSXjin to TAS this game.

Currently put on hold for an indefinite amount of time.

Currently put on hold until PSXjin has Skip Lag Frames option, which makes the game actually TASable.

Returning back to TASing this game, in PCSX.

Currently put on hold again to start again at a later point in time.

These are the kinds of runs (commonly fighting game runs) where I do a round of two, and the result is generally good to watch, but I tend to lose interest quickly enough that it doesn't get farther than a few stages. Common reasons are repetitiveness or that the runs would be too long or dragged out.

Arcade Marvel vs. Capcom

Author: Mothrayas
Content: Two separate fights
See this forum topic.

One fight with Strider + Zangief vs. AI Captain Commando + Wolverine, and one fight with Gold War Machine + War Machine vs. Gold War Machine + Wolverine. Both fights are quite short.

Arcade X-Men: Children of the Atom

Author: Mothrayas
Content: Two separate fights of two rounds each
See this forum topic.

The first Marvel fighting game, and also one of the most broken ones. Flashy combo's with hundreds of hits abound.

Contains one match of Storm vs. AI Silver Samurai, and one match of Storm vs. Colossus.

PSX Dragon Ball Z: Ultimate Battle 22

Author: Mothrayas
Content: Six fights
See this forum topic.

A fighting game starring Dragon Ball Z characters. Not exactly the fastest paced fighter, nor with particularly impressive juggles. Fights are still rather short, though.

Plays as Captain Ginyu (body swapping with every opponent) vs. Captain Ginyu, Goten, Vegeta, Future Trunks, Piccolo and Android 18.

PSX Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu

Author: Mothrayas
Content: One fight (three rounds)
See this forum topic.

Whereas the last run didn't quite feel speedy enough, this game contains ridiculously fast gameplay with control of up to three characters at a time. It's just a shame that every round is interrupted by (unskippable) cutscenes, and that it takes a long time to actually defeat a single opponent.

Fights with Goku + Gohan + Piccolo vs. Nappa.

Other future ideas of TASes I could do. I haven't really or seriously thought about these much, but I may or may not do some of these later.

In any case, at the very least I think these games do deserve a run on the site, if there isn't one already.

PS2 Mega Man X8

Mega Man X8 was one of my favorite Mega Man X games, alongside MMX6 and MMX2. Of course, I'd have to wait until PS2 TASing becomes a reality.

GB Mega Man IV

Should also get a published run on the site along with SGB Mega Man V.

PSX Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time "100%"

This is one of those games I really loved to play over and over again when I was little. I may do this sometime in the future. However, PCSX and PSXjin have a cutscene freezing issue shortly after the tutorial stage of the game, rendering it incompletable at this point in time.

Here's a list of tool-assisted speedruns I am currently judging or have judged. See JudgeCounts to compare statistics with the other judges.
