Movies / Gruefood Delight

Gruefood Delight is a list of movie submissions that entertained some viewers but not enough to be published on TASVideos.

Please post in its forum topic if you have suggestions for other submissions to include.

Bon appétit, fellow gruefood gourmands!

Due to the significant number of video modules that need to be displayed, some tabs may take a while to load.

#1896: FractalFusion's GBA Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow in 53:17.47
The meme of the game is a mouthful, and so was this movie apparently, which is similar to the published movie of this game's prequel. Stealth done wrong, or very, very right.

#1576: SuperHappy's SNES Puzzle Bobble in 25:44.12
This game is also known as "Bust-a-Move".
The run completes 100 stages in total!

#2682: MUGG's GBA Wario Ware, Inc.: Mega Microgame$! in 29:19.45
Um, everything in this game takes the same amount of time no matter what you do. Still an entertaining game to watch though.

#1791: Flip's Genesis Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine in 07:15.7
Considered to be too similar to the "Kirby's Avalanche" game, but they both steal from Puyo Puyo.

#2043: GeminiSaint's NES Chack'n Pop in 06:56.32
Cute little prequel to Bubble Bobble.

#1500: Samhain-Grim's SNES Virtual Bart in 19:06.58
Yet another crappy simpsons game what were they thinking arrrrrgh

#1939: Samoht's GBA Ms Pacman in 06:26.4
This arcade port is a bit repetitive and has a fairly arbitrary end point, but it is interesting to see the Pacman genre TASed.

See also Randil's NES run (forum post by Randil + YouTube video)

#863: Aqfaq's Genesis Rolo to the Rescue in 09:04.55
"Rolo to the Rescue is a cute game about an elephant who tries to save her furry friends from an evil circus master. In this any% movie however, Rolo runs home as fast as possible using her friends only for selfish purposes. So, Rolo aims for fastest time and even forces her poor friends to absorb damage for her."

#1582: Cardboard & Vidar's SNES The Firemen in 15:26.67
The best darn firefighting on TASVideos.

#1668: kirbymuncher's NES Gyromite in 23:10.0
This game was intended to be played with ROB ... gets a bit boring by the end but features glitching and a totally corny premise.

#2015: Dammit's Genesis Might and Magic: Gates to Another World in 06:15.33
This is an enormous, convoluted games, torn to pieces.

The action is a bit repetitive and hard to follow, but quite astonishing.

#2236: Kyman's SNES Clue in 00:26.92
Clue (or Cluedo) is a boardgame where you try to deduce who committed a murder. In a TAS, you can just look in RAM to figure it out! So the challenge is only to manipulate luck to be able to answer as fast as possible. It's pretty ok!

#2677: FractalFusion's NES The Chessmaster in 00:07.12
Rejected for being too short a chess TAS. Computer opponents on the lowest difficulty are known to be bad. But this opponent was so good it lost amazingly fast.

#1460: ECCO's NES Code Name: Viper in 11:06.48
Discussion forum of this game has the new slogan for Gruefood Delight "You find this game boring and the music bad? It's easy -- don't play it and watch the run then, but don't bury it for those who care, OK?" -- kay

#1950: BZero's NES King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder in 33:30.93
A classic Sierra game.

The sound and graphics are not quite up to snuff, and the movie is somewhat repetitive, but an interesting watch.

#964: Hiryuu's SNES Ranma Nibunnoichi - Chougi Ranbu Hen in 11:10.3
Fighting game base on the manga/anime/whatever. Involves a fighting panda!

#1851: xipo's NES Top Gun - The Second Mission in 12:54.85
Strangely hypnotic movie...

#1924: Yunshui's NES Tiny Toon Adventures 2 - Trouble in Wackyland in 14:00.48
A lot of autoscrolling, but some of the sections are very interesting as a TAS. Is also purported to be improvable, though it's doubtful anyone will bother to attempt it given the reception.

#1163: dave_dfwm's NES Rambo in 18:40.43
Spectacularly bad game. From the submission text: "This game starts with Rambo killing wasps and snakes, and moves up to him killing robots that shoot fireballs. Needless to say, this is exactly like the movie the game is based on."

#2003: max12187566's NES JAN Lion King in 05:24.38
A really terrible "port" of the interesting Genesis/SNES games.

#1816: AngerFist's SMS Kung Fu Kid in 07:59.55
Bunny hopping.

#1882: Warp's NES Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in 18:04.85
What a terrible game. Fun with Rolling Rock though.

#1677: Twisted Eye's NES Archon in 01:15.52
Don't expect much from this movie — it's about 5 chess moves long. But it does feature a Unicorn vs Dragon matchup.

#1627: weatherton's Genesis Outrun in 04:25.73
Racing games that don't feature Mario or Captain Falcon are often neglected here, usually deservedly for being very repetitive.

This one is nice and short, and unlike some racing movies actually finishes the game.

#700: Mechakoopa Revolution's NES Road Fighter in 04:36.4
A short, simple tas, which is allegedly funny.

#2331: was0x's NES Front Line in 02:38.97
This is held up as the pinnacle of bad game choice. Your mileage may vary...

#881: tool23's NES Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom in 37:23.28
"Storybook" game that is very peculiar.

#2037: DarkKobold's SegaCD Dragon's Lair in 10:45.65
This full motion video game was quite the "breakthrough" technologically in arcades, but this run of the Sega CD port reinforces how simplistic it truly is. Movie added because author mentioned this page in the description :)

#1934: Chamale's NES North & South in 01:20.15
An example of a bad game to tas. Features mild animal cruelty.

#2180: was0x's NES Cheetahmen II in 02:20.27
Possibly the worst game ever. [1584] NES Action 52: The Cheetahmen (USA) by Swordless Link in 03:56.06 makes a case for itself though, despite being published.

#1786: mz's NES Snoopy's Silly Sports Spectacular in 02:14.5
The name says it all.

#660: CtrlAltDestroy's NES Rocket Ranger in 03:37.53
A strange, really quick game. "...[T]his movie is a strange slideshow of random scenes flashing across the screen [and] ... a strange mix of many different game elements ..."

#1848: Aqfaq's Genesis Ka-Ge-Ki - Fists of Steel in 15:35.93
"1) If you don't like watching movies of bad games, don't ever watch this movie!

2) If you enjoy bad games, then this one is a killer! "

#2423: Fladdermus's NES Where's Waldo in 02:12.5
A movie of one of the least TAS-able games ever.

#2281: Randil's NES Fire n' Ice in 1:03:32.6
Good movie of a nice game, but rejected because the result looks more like a walkthrough.

#957: slash_star_dash's N64 Castlevania in 45:19.97
Author canceled due to improvements.

#1840: maTO's Genesis Rambo III in 08:51.88
TODO: expand the description

Using a new shortcut, maTO has improved this run by 18 seconds, but hasn't submitted it to TASVideos yet. The improvement can be watched on maTO's YouTube channel.

#2069: turtle's GBA Screw Breaker - Goushin Dorirurero in 1:54:27.92
A game — released in North America as Drill Dozer — where you dig and stuff. Canceled by author due to improvements.

#1944: symbolic X's NES Magic of Scheherazade, The (U) in 1:13:44.32
Canceled for improvements, also a bit of a long run for some.

#1580: BagOfMagicFood, FODA, Randil's GB Super Mario Land 2 in 18:21.73
This relies on an emulator glitch rather than a game glitch so is not really legitimate — but it's still pretty funny. We now have an "official" run...

#1493: Bisqwit's DOS Star Control II in 35:03.5
OK, this one isn't too fascinating in and of itself, but this stands as the first ever PC TAS submitted to TASVideos.

#1968: Swordless Link's GB The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening in 03:36.37
It's over 20 seconds faster than the (U) version, but we certainly don't have any Japanese roms on this site.

#1036: SuperHappy's GBA Astro Boy: The Omega Factor in 31:01.17
Canceled due to not completing the game. It only completes the interesting half...

#3589: Crash41596 & Hutch's PSX Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon "Enter the Sorceress' Lair with 100 eggs" in 55:16.45
Plays a nearly full run throughout the game, but then the problem is bad emulation doesn't allow the player to finish the final boss fight. Whoops.

#1030: catnap222's SNES Metroid Legacy "100%" in 1:26:37.05
One of the better Super Metroid hacks.

Hoandjzj improved this run in 42' (in-game time), but didn't submitted it to TASVideos. You can watch the run in this YouTube playlist.
Try searching through Hoandjzj's channel to see more Super Metroid hacks beaten in an incredible time.

#2042: HappyLee's NES Full Moon Mario in 05:11.58
Another Mario hack ... it looks better than most.

#1819: mushroom's NES Hard Relay Mario in 09:56.98
Another wacky SMB hack...

#2544: true's NES Somari in 24:14.09
This notorious pirate cart features Mario in a Sonic-like game. It is also an enormous pile of crap.

For your viewing pleasure, Flygon also made an HD encode of this run

#1991: AngerFist's NES Mega Man 1 & Mega Man 2 & Mega Man 3 & Mega Man 4 & Mega Man 5 & Mega Man 6 in 02:42.9
The next step after the 4 Mega Man movie, this completes one stage of all 6 NES Mega Man games with the same set of input.

#1572: mr_roberts_z's N64 Super Mario 64 "Coinless-Cannonless-Capless" in 1:03:10.8
This collects as many stars as possible with the restrictions laid out in the title. Some stars are very difficult to get this way ... there's even an "epic" glitch that should be seen to be believed.

Note that the sound in the YouTube video has not been fixed yet.

#2976: Eru & Kyman & Mickey/VIS & Moltov & Nahoc & SilentSlayers & snark & sonicpacker's N64 Super Mario 64 "16 stars" in 13:28.4
This run completes the game after collecting a mere 16 stars. It was originally intended that the player collect a minimum of 70 to finish, but a few bugs allow Mario to pass through doors and barriers that require a minimum number of stars to open.

#1533: Weatherton's N64 Mario Kart 64 "Any%" in 06:43.23
#1515: Michael Fried's N64 Mario Kart 64 in 00:43.6
A full run of this game is highly anticipated of course, but these will tide you over. They are almost overly glitchy for some, especially the special cup.

The video displayed at the left is weatherton's "Special Cup" run, but you can also view Michael Fried's "One lap" run on Dailymotion.

#2001: mike89's Genesis Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog "No ring" in 16:44.43
A "concept movie" that defeats a Sonic game without collecting rings. Turns out it's not possible in any "official" game so the author used this famous hack.

#2704: Kregorio's Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog 2 "Without SpinDash" in 22:29.52
TODO: add a description

#2449: NameSpoofer's SNES Super Metroid "glitchless low%, Speedbooster" in 44:18.62
Say what you will about this run, it is LEGIT!

#1502: skamastaG & thegreginator's SNES Super Mario World "walkathon" in 14:03.7
An interesting idea for Super Mario Bros applied to Super Mario World. Instead of "Does not use B" the rule for this one is "[no] pressing Y/X and left/right at all on the ground or in air ... y/x are still pressed in this run, but only for holding items, never to increase mario's speed (except for underwater)".

#2624: MUGG's GB Super Mario Land "walkathon" in 15:00.23
ALL MARIO GAMES MUST HAVE WALKATHONS OK? THANKS

#1783: Genisto's SNES Super Mario World "Playaround" in 52:39.23
#1801: Genisto's SNES Super Mario World "Playaround" in 45:30.42
These two playarounds include some interesting bits left out of the many other SMW runs.

The video displayed at the left is Genisto's playaround v2, but you can also watch the first version on Dailymotion.

#872: Genisto's GBA Mario Kart Super Circuit "Playaround" in 43:37.43
TODO: add a description

#1660: Hongbaichaoren's NES Super C in 12:35.93
Dismissed as inferior to a 2 player run. How cute, he's flossing that skull with a gun.

#1654: xipo's NES Ninja Gaiden 2 in 09:14.05
While about 30 frames faster than the published movie, the excesive use of "gliding" (holding L+R to move which suspends running animation) was deemed less entertaining.

#1503: Xkeeper's NES Tetris in 00:08.92
A game over in Tetris quickly. "The amount of frame optimization to keep the possible avi as short as possible is stunning!! Anyway, it's much more entertaining than if input had ended on the first possible frame." — bkDJ

#1901: Deign's NES Color A Dinosaur "Stegosaur" in 00:41.83
Not sure why this got rejected.

#1904: adelikat's NES Color a Dinosaur "Pterodactyl" in 00:43.58
By popular demand: "This movie is slower than Deign's movie, but FAR more entertaining as it takes the most entertaining path and executes it masterfully." -- adelikat, from the submission text.

#1504: curtmack's NES NES Test in 01:31.68
Wow.

#1908: Chamale's NES Nintendo World Cup in 00:03.15
Could also be under Technical Foul ... but it does beat the first half of the game with practically no input.

#2211: alden's Genesis Desert Bus in 41:17:15:06, or in 1001:15:05.68
The entire game compilation is a joke, not to mention the TAS. This particular game, a real-time bus driving simulator, became so famous that an annual charity event was created, where people play Desert Bus just because. This TAS goes on for 41 days and 17 hours.

#2611: adelikat's N64 Elmo's Letter Adventure "Playaround" in 01:12.4
Because we needed more Sesame Street. Elmo loves you, but he also loves drugs apparently.

#1903: Sticky's Genesis Barney's Hide and Seek in 00:02.75
Not only does this beat the game by itself, it does so nine times.

Images were for the most part plagiarized from our friend NesVideoAgent, and anything in quotes is from the movie's submission text except where noted otherwise.
