The submission message follows:
Wooo finally done with this. This was quite the pain.
Alot of planning had to be done for this game.

It took me roughly almost a month to do this game.

I apologize for the length of this movie. The sims really are the main reason for that. ( and I'm sorry if they bore you. I tried to make them look as interesting as possible.)

Actraiser is basicly two games in one. Theres the action side scrolling stages and then theres the sims. In the sims you must seal all the monsters lairs by directing the people where to build. You also have magic in this game. You find them only in the sims. I get magics Magical Fire and Magical Stardust (which just plain rocks most of the bosses)

You find mp for your spells in the sims. I only take 5 out of the 7 because the others waste too much time getting.

Some Notes:

  • Each area has a level requirement. You get levels based on population. There are 3 places where I have to take some time to level so I can move on to the next area. (Kasandora, Aitos, and Marahna.)
  • In Aitos Act 1 stage I take a moment to get the sword power up as it beats the boss faster then magic. (doesn't do crap to it)
  • Using magic on the Act 1 boss in Marahna is useless. Jump slashing him is the fastest.

Tricks:

  • Doing a jumping attack at the right frame results in a bigger jump. I use this alot to save time.
  • I defeat the Act 2 Bloodpool boss fast so he doesnt go into his 2nd form.

  • Warpless
  • Takes damage to save time.
  • Aims for fastest time.
  • Recorded in Snes9x

Special thanks to Zurreco for his greatly appreciated feedback during the course of this movie being made.

Bisqwit: I like this movie. Maybe because it has so good music and I don't understand the half of what's going on.
This game reminds me a bit of Bahamut Lagoon. It's a similar crazy combination of unrelated game types.
But it's so long... over an hour! I'm almost sure there will be nobody who won't use fast-forward to skip over some parts of this movie when watching.
Regardless, I like this movie, and I will process it.
However, if someone else submits an Actraiser movie, I have no idea what to do with it :)
Ps: All that idle flying around in circles is going to affect the size of the AVI file created... Well, don't worry about it. :)
Ps2: The screen shaking (leftrightleftrightleftrightleftrightleftrightleftright etc) is headache-inducing. Please don't do it the next time.

Bisqwit: As to be expected, this made a huge AVI file...

Couldn't you have entered the code for the Proffesional mode, which only contains the arcade levels?

I'll check this out anyway though, loved the game.

I'll check this out too when I have the time.

I strongly disagree with using the professional mode, because the simulation parts are what made this game so special. Using the prof mode would be blatantly cheating those who remember this as a good sim game. (Though I admit the sim parts can make the run look boring)

I also loved the sim part, I didn't mean that that part was boring, I just meant that it might be boring to watch when watching a speedrun. Maybe someone should make a professional vid too?

On the other hand, don't you have to finish the game before being able to select Professional? I never finished that damn game (stupid final bosses)

Yes, there has been much talk of this. You must complete the game beofre you can select the pro-mode. You cannot avoid the sims without starting from a savestate (which is against the rules).

I've watched it now, and as I suspected, it was a bit boring during the town sequenses, I even fell asleep twice... But then I always get tired of watching speedruns for some weird reason.

I think there was a bit too many health losses, where all of them really nessecary?

In any case, you've spent so much time on this one, and the amount of re-runs was extremely high, so I think this should be published just because of the dedication.

Yes, it has been measured and any point I take damage is faster.

I can second that. Any time where damage is taken, the character chooses to fall instead of jump, or pauses for a moment, it is due to random circumstances that would slow the movie.

Great movie. You handled the Death Heim better than I had expected.

OK, it would still look cooler if you wouldn't have taken damage though :)

I'm gonna say yes to this one, because the general familiarity of the game and the quality of the run shadows the low entertainment level in some parts.

edit: and I think the majority is with you on the decision to take damage for time.

You people should try European version Action mode with expert difficulty first before publishing...

Every monster does 3-4 damage instead of one.

Every monster takes 2-3 hits (or more) before dying.

Bosses are harder (well... they are like in Death Heim in Sim mode)

There's no Sim mode and absolutely no magic scrolls or powerups before stages (you can find magic scrolls and powerups in the stages itself, tho)

I think this would suit more as a time attack. Much more careful planning must be done.

1. As I've understood it, PAL versions are normally not allowed.
2. You still have to complete the game to access Professional, even on the PAL version (I played this game like crazy when it first came out).
3. You're not allowed to begin recording a movie inside the game, thus starting the vid when professional is accessed isn't possible.
4. The game won't be really complete without the sim levels, even if they might be a bit boring to watch.

No problem with PAL versions on SNES9x.
On Famtasia, they're troublesome because of emulator restrictions (it only supports NTSC).
On Gens, they're troublesome because the movie file does not tell FPS, thus the site can only try to guess what is the movie's length.

Would it be feasible to allow movies from save states in some exceptions(such as this one), then put the save state as an additional file if it is published, allowing access to the starting point for anyone who wants to try their hand at it? For instance, the save state in this particular case would come right before the title screen pops up after beating the game for the first time.

The only possible downside would be that some might try to cheat, making their own save state a few frames before the "official" save state begins. But this should be easy enough to detect.

Err... I have a European version that has Story Mode and Action Mode selection right at the beginning of the game..
So "only action mode" is possible.

Actraiser (E) [!].smc

I have completed that until Aitos Act 2.

This topic seems to be quite dead, but here goes anyway.
I downloaded the SMV file from the Tasvideos.org site. And when I played it through the Snes9X, it was defenitly not the speedrun I watched. I think it was a failed try, but not sure about that eiter... am I doing something wrong, or is the SMV file not the correct one or not working?
