Another Duck Tales run by the dynamic duo.

This run came about due to the fact that the Duck Tales games or so fun to TAS :) Guybrush mentioned doing this run some time ago, and I said that I don't think that OmnipotentEntity's run could be improved by even a single frame. He proved me wrong, and soon I was working on it along with him.
This run is a modest 85 frames (about 1.5 sec) faster than the current published run. It comes from several minor tricks that all saved a handful of frames (some disappointingly small compared than what I would have thought).

A few tricks: (but not all)

1) Upon obtaining a treasure at the end of the level, Scrooges vertical velocity is carried over to his descent in the next level. This means that grabbing it while accelerating downward will make him fall to the ground faster in the next level (as opposed to walking into it for instance). Unfortunately scrooges initial vertical velocity of a level is only relevant in the moon level. By minimizing my velocity, I was able to pass over the two enemies without losing horizontal motion.
2) Maximizing vertical acceleration. Scrooge's y coordinate was particularly helpful here. When going up a rope, it is best to get as much acceleration from a pogo jump (or regular) jump before going up even if it means the screen scrolling at a later frame. Scrooge's height carries over to the next screen. Creative uses of this makes up much of the improvements.

Special Thanks

I'd like to thank my partner Guybrush for his eye in spotting small optimizations. I'd like to thank the previous authors OmnipotentEntity & Genisto who contributed a majority of the tricks/routes etc. (This run is only 4.5 sec faster than Genisto's famtasia run)

Summary:

  • Uses FCEU .16 (Luke's latest release)
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Manipulates Luck

adelikat: Canceling due to a found improvement. A jump in level 1 saves 25 frames (first estimated to be only 10). We will be working on a new version.

Wait, where does that 1287 number come from? The last submission I can see is 1201.

uhhh, submission threads are just like threads in any other forum/subforum, they're in order of most recent posts. 85 frames of improvement over a presumed perfect movie? I like dat. That's dedication to perfection right there.

I'll give you a cookie if you can link submissions #1202 - #1286 for me :) EDIT: Apparently they do exist: it seems they are pseudo-submissions created by NesVideoAgent when Bisqwit added the old movies into the database.

Haha, it would be much less time to create a run for submission 1337! Fine run, voting yes.

Guess I'll also vote yes even though you hardly cannot spot the differences (in my opinion) between this run and Omni's.

JXQ's idea was to die after getting the remote. I optimized that route and it fails by 50 frames. Oh, well.

Good movie. I liked this more than the previous one even though they use exactly the same route. Somehow your playing looked more interesting. So voting yes for being faster and more entertaining that it's predecessor. I have also encoded and .avi of this already, because i'm 100% sure it'll get accepted.
Which run should I encode next? :)

If you're wondering why this hasn't been accepted yet, I'm not sure what to think here. Feelback would be appreciated. I noticed and Guybrush confirmed a possible 10-frame improvement on the first level (pogo off the bees while climbing up). Now usually a 10-frame mistake is nothing and would not be an issue for accepting a movie, but in this case the improvement from the previous version is only 85 frames, so 10 frames feels more siginificant. It would feel silly to have another movie later which improved this one with only 10 frames.

I voted yes, but that was before seeing truncated's post... Since there is no major difference between this run and the previous (i.e. no major route changes) and since there is another [small] improvement to be made, I think this needs to be remade with the improvement added (is hex editing it in possible?). Still can't believe this run isn't frame perfect - sure looks it.

We might have to redo the whole run, because the improvement is actually bigger than expected.
