Let me make ONE THING clear: any Harry Potter 7 love/hate discussion will not be tolerated. To all Deathly Hallows lovers/haters: shut up. Just keep your debates AWAY from this. I think there's an old thread I started way back when the book was first released; if you want to, bump it and garble on to your heart's content (Yeah, I'm being a hypocrite, but in this thread alone I'll change my ways).
Anyway, what was the most disappointing sequel you've ever experienced in any medium (books, games, movies, TV seasons, second music albums etc.)?
For me, there are a few. Starting with some obvious ones: Devil May Cry 2 and The End (Book 13 of "A Series of Unfortunate Events") come to mind. Here are two others which I'm not so sure if you know.
First off is HAMISH X GOES TO PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND by Seán Cullen. I'm sure that most of you haven't heard of the series, so it basically goes like this. Hamish X is this robot kid sent by the Orphan Disposal Agency to monitor various companies who are using the orphans as cheap labour, but Hamish turns rogue and starts rescuing kids, and - oh screw this, the storyline's stupid and if I didn't know any better I would have thought Hideo Kojima ghostwrote it. But the thing is, the Hamish X series has always had that balance between serious and silly storytelling, combining Douglas Adams' total randomness and Lemony Snicket's black comedy. HAMISH X AND THE CHEESE PIRATES and HAMISH X AND THE HOLLOW MOUNTAIN were great. But having read through half of the third book so far, it's much more inconsistent. There are flashes of brilliance but mostly it's just dull, with a mediocre plot and uninspired humour. I am, however, still holding out hope.
Another that comes to mind is FOLKLORE, Nelly Furtado's second album. I don't know why, but it didn't seem to have nearly the same amount of imagination, care or spirit that WHOA! NELLY did. Maybe it's just me.
Soooo...what was YOUR biggest sequel disappointment? Spit it out! Or else I'll count this thread as a personal disappointment...:(

Last book in the Dark is Rising Series, the ending of a war which was brewing for the entire series is completely anti climatic.

Batman & Robin. To quote a friend "I love it because it is Batman." Otherwise, the movie sucks.
TMNT 3 is a horrible, horrible movie.

I've never been very badly disappointed by a movie sequel, as many of my favourites don't have sequels, but that just makes the worst sequel ever a more obvious choice.

Cube 2 was written by a completely different director than the original director, and it's about something very different. In the original, the cube was a mysterious enigma, physically possible but with no known motive or designer. However, the sequel is all about time travel and alternate dimensions and the designers of the cube are revealed. Which is ridiculous. It's like if you made a sequel to The Sixth Sense about Bruce Willis' ghost's adventures in the afterlife. Actually, it's significantly worse than that. Cube 2 isn't a terrible movie, but it's such a bad take on the original that it isn't worth watching.

Also, Nanosaur 2 was the most disappointing video game sequel ever. The original was one of the best alternative third-person shooters in existence, and still is if you can find a computer that will run it, but the new one is like a dinosaur-themed flight simulator. It's as if they forgot what movie they were making.
Hmm, there's quite a few I think, but those I can recall off-hand are mostly:
Final book of THGttG, I believe. It might have been more than one book, but I clearly recall that the part which started the spiral into badness for me was when that woman disappeared in some freak warp accident or some-such while traveling.
Final two books of The Dark Tower series. The 6th book is way too boring, and the "ending" at the 7th is the type I hate most.
Dungeon Keeper 3 and its non-existence. That's quite a disappointment for me.
Cube 2 was written by a completely different director than the original director, and it's about something very different.
Personally, I don't think Cube 2 is much of a "take" on the original. I prefer thinking of it as a "concept demo" rather than a sequel. Maybe it helped that I watched it before the original Cube, but to me, it's a fine movie by itself. Probably because I'm a sucker for odd sci-fi concepts (even if they're just technobabble with flashy effects).

Did you see the same movie as me? Because when I watched Cube 2, I saw a badly written, badly thought out, badly executed ball of crap with some horrendous acting to boot. Everything about it was pure suck.
The original Cube, on the other hand, is absolutely fantastic.

I didn't really enjoy either Evil Dead Movie, the 3rd of the trilogy is a complete departure, but one of my favorite movies of all time.

The second season of Heroes was disappointing, but probably only because of the writer's strike.
Also, not really a sequel, but D&D 4.0 is making me mad at the moment, due to the blatant fanservice. I can imagine dumb kids sending in letters talking about their needs for "demon-like characters that like to wear buckles and chains and spikes and Invader Zim patches". Some fool at the company reads the dozens of letters like this and decides that it MUST be a good idea.

I've only seen cube 2 once, and when it first started, I was excited. A third of the way through, I was pissed. After it was over, I could only shake my head at how much of a crappy movie it was compared to the original.
I've always had a secret liking of the two Matrix sequels but I know a lot of people hate them, so I'll throw them in for everyone else in the world.
Turok 2 & 3 weren't incredibly bad, but they were certainly worse than the first. After all of hype for #2, I tried really hard to like it, but it's just not as fun. And I hear that Evolution sucks even more balls.
Zelda 2. Yeah, I said it.
Perfect Dark Zero. The original was so, so good, and a great successor to Goldeneye. Zero was pretty much worth just that.
Yeah, well, accusations of "sucking after X" for bands have always been around and always will be.
Truth be told, most people think of the band in terms of that one album they really like; the next album cannot be identical, and therefore does not fit into the old view of the band, so is considered inferior.
Or they're just a bunch of sell outs ;)

I wouldn't use the term default, maybe you hype sequels up so much that you can only end up being disapointed. A minor reason for the decline in some of them is that the actors know they have to be in it and can hold the studios to ransom like in Terminator 3's case.

Batman Begins (not a sequel but better than the orginal)
Oceans 11 (yes there is a film which predates this)
Kill Bill 2 (debateabul whether this is a sequel, it's more of a planned continuation)

I think the topic title should be renamed 'Jumped The Shark Moments'
In terms of the newly mentioned title I'd have to say Karate Kid 3 really jumped the shark, but more ironically it had a far worse sequel which I'm too traumatized to even mention.
In terms of games I'd have to say Resident Evil 0, the main gameplay concept had clearly run it's course and new systems that were added made the game less playable. Thankfully it had the greatest comeback of all time in the name of Resident Evil 4.
