Kid Niki 3 TAS by TaoTao

This is my first submission.

Essentials

  • Emulator used: FCEU 0.98.28
  • Aims for fastest time.
  • Takes damage to save time.
  • Manipulates luck.
  • No death.

About the game

Kid Niki 3 (aka. Kaiketsu Yanchamaru 3 - Taiketsu! Zouringen) is the sequel to "Kid Niki", "Kid Niki 2". But it looks quite different from previous productions. You are a ninja who is a master of Bo-jutsu (stick art), and, you defeat enemies and get over obstacles with your staff.
To complete the game, you must clear 7 levels. You meet a boss at the end of each level.
This game was never released outside Japan.

About the run

To save time, it is important to use sliding and Bo-jutsu action well. The ninja moves fastest when he slide. And you must use Bo-jutsu action (mainly, somersault and bounce) to get over obstacles.
I discovered a technique (glitch?) named "forward somersault", and I achieved significant improvement with this technique. The ninja usually can do a somersault only backward, but you can let him do a forward somersault by quick turning before doing a somersault. Furthermore, you can climb a vertical wall using forward somersault one after another.
The enemy drops an item which is determined randomly when you beat 5 enemies. A scroll makes the ninja invincible for a while, and it is very useful for TASing. I manipulated luck to obtain scrolls by watching internal random number. But it is not easy to predict the random number for a long period, because the random number is affected by the timing which enemies appear.

Researches not useful (for now) for TASing

Invisible walls at the edge of screen

There are invisible walls outside of screen. For example, in the left picture, it seems as if you could go through from right to left on the left wall. Like the right picture, you can climb over the left wall using forward somersault, all right, but actually you can't go through the boundary of left side.
It seems that these invisible walls have infinite height. I tried to climb over some invisible walls using forward somersault, but it failed. I put a movie attempting to do it.

Scrolling bug

Screen scrolling seems a little buggy. In the picture above, the ninja have gone out of screen from right side. It is caused when scrolling doesn't works, but for now I have not discovered the strict way to cause it. I have encountered this bug only in stage 2, and could not clear the stage after this bug occurred. I put a movie reproducing this bug.

Others

Because I could found few resources about this game, I had to analyze the game almost by myself. But, I don't have great confidence in my analysis. So, there may be several rooms for improvement. But, anyway, I did my best.
Enjoy!

mmbossman: A colorful and short game, with a fair amount of variety, and it looks pretty well done. Accepting for publication.

Congratulations for your first submission, TaoTao! I liked watching it. Everything seemed very precisely planned and executed. Funny how the boss fights were almost copied from Rockman. Especially the final boss, which was just like Dr. Wily with his bizarre machine.

Wow, I really liked this movie... lots of action and it appears well thought out. This is a great game to TAS. Very unique and lots of varied movement and attacks, plus too short to get anywhere near boring for me... if anything I wish it were a bit longer. I will say congratulations to you as well TaoTao, and look forward to more of your work. Oh, and I want to learn "Bo-jutsu" now :D

Oh shit I remember this run, I watched it when it was submitted, then I forgot to vote, and now I can't vote! I do remember feeling that it was a good enough game to be published.

Thanks for watching! I added some researches to submission page. Because they are not useful for now, I omitted them at first. But I have come to think it is important to share (even trivial) information.

A good amount of action, a fun game, and no noticeable technical flaws. Couldn't ask for better.

I voted 8.8 for entertainment, but I didn't vote for technical because I'm not familiar with this game. It doesn't matter anyway, as this run has been recently accepted. Here is an encode of this, even though I'm starting to lose the hope to become an official encoder :\ Disclaimer: the encode proposed in the link above is unofficial and hasn't been used for actual publication, despite having higher video and sound quality than the published one.

I appreciate all the encodes you've done, Nineko, and I'm sure plenty of other people do as well who don't want to wait for the movies to be published before watching, but can't/won't deal with emulators and movie files.

I'm happy to know some people enjoyed this run and it is accepted. This game is not so famous in fact, so I have been a bit anxious about the evaluation to my submission. Thank you for encoding, nineko. I watched the encoded movie. I think it has good enough quality. I had been also one of publication-waiting people.

Perhaps the old voting system is so ingrained in our culture that saying, "Voting yes," has become slang for, "I approve."
A hundred years from now, they will gaze upon my work and marvel at my skills but never know my name. And that will be good enough for me.

I can see why this title wasn't ported for the US. Were those little boys using their penises for weapons in stage 2?!? Good run though. I enjoyed the first Kid Niki title so I watched this.

I want to join the others in saying that I appreciate being able to see the movies without having to go through the trouble of finding roms (from whatever dubious sites found with google), the proper emulator version (which might or might not work in my linux system) and get them to work. This allows me to more easily participate in the voting. Have you contacted the admins about your desire to become an encoder?

No, I decided to give up, I'll keep on making encodes just for the sake of it, to help people watch the movies without the trouble of setting up rom and emulator (as you said). That's enough for me to be happy :) I will use higher quality settings, too, since my AVIs won't be used for actual publication I won't stick to the low quality settings listed in the FAQ anymore, in favor of a better audio and video quality, as size isn't really a problem when you're not downloading from a torrent.

No
Well, maybe the reason why you haven't been promoted to official encoder is because the admins haven't noticed you? (OTOH, one could argue that *that* is precisely one reason to give up in the first place... :) )

I'd disagree. Also, the video quality in run movies is usually enough to be pixel-perfect- these games aren't very high res. On side note, I believe that those "little boys" are supposed to be the typical fountain cherubs that fountain like that, but...

Huh... the movie listed for download from archive.org on the movie page is for Kid Niki 2... I watched that run thinking I was watching this. That would explain why I was so confused reading the comments.
