• Used Nitsuja's rerecording VBA version 10, lag reduction turned on.
  • Doesn't use warps or passwords
  • Doesn't use any blantant programming errors (at least not to my knowledge)
  • Uses some minor luck manipulation (mainly for enemies that can spawn from either side of the screen, I made them always spawn from the closest side of the screen. This only applies to a relatively small amount of enemies though.)
  • Doesn't get hit, except in 2 VS fights you're meant to lose.
  • Plays on Hard difficulty
  • Tries to complete the game moderately fast, while showing off different things you can do and getting a high score in progress.
DBAA is mainly a platformer/beat'em-up, with some one-on-one fights with more important characters thrown in. Despite the reputation of DB(Z) games, this one is actually well-made and fun to play.
General notes:
-Doing 1-frame jumps cancels most of the recovery for ground attacks, and keeps you moving, so obviously it's used quite a bit. Also, if you jump at an exact frame you land from a running jump (there won't be a cloud of dust to signify a landing as normal), you retain running momentum even if you turn around, allowing you to save some frames whenever you jump in platform-heavy sections where you don't have to fight any enemies.
-The "rush" special attack serves as an useful way to change directions while keeping you moving at a decent speed while also ignoring momentum. The reason it's not used more often is because it can't be cancelled out of and there can't be any enemies in its path or the actual attack is triggered.
-I chose to collect all 3 optional Ki upgrades to be able to spam the rush special attack on bosses as much as possible, as well as being able to do high-leveled Ki blasts in VS fights, as those do the most damage.
-The dive kick seems to be the fastest way to move, but each kick has around 6 frames of startup lag. If used at a height where it won't be cut short and if it doesn't connect with any enemies, it seems to break even, though.
-As seen many times in the movie, the best way to rack up insane hitcounts and score multipliers as well as killing all bosses in one combo is to use what I call Dive Kick Infinite Of Doom, which involves hitting a (preferably airborne) enemy with a dive kick, cancelling that into the upward kick, cancelling that into dive kick, and repeating as long as the enemy doesn't drop low enough to touch the ground. What's interesting is that doing this combo repeatedly actually lets you gain height, which means its use is only limited by what height the enemy is at when you connect with the first knockdown hit (which occurs either when a grounded enemy dies or a grounded human boss gets hit enough times in a row)
-Obviously running is the main methoid of movement, as running speed carries over to jumps, and the running elbow attack can be used to start ground chains and kill enemies faster.
Stage-specific notes:
-I picked the lower route in Pilaf's castle, as the other route has rolling boulders you need avoid by waiting under ledges which cause unavoidable waiting perioids.
-The cavern has 2 different routes for the first section as well, but I doubt the other route would've been faster, as it involves taking a long detour.
-As the enemies aren't nearly as agressive as in in shmups and because Goku isn't as nearly as manuverable and as small of a target as, say, Vic Viper, and because touching enemies doesn't harm you, trying to do any acrobatics around them or their bullets in the autoscrolling flying stage isn't really that great of an idea. Instead I opted to do what Goku does best, kick a lot of ass.
-You aren't meant to cross the large pit in the 3rd section of the Red Ribbon Base, but I managed to do it regardless. This allowed me to skip a ! fight.
-The ending requires user input to go through the text boxes, so that's why I didn't end the movie any quicker.

Like Gunstar Heroes with more platforming and less weaponry - Yes vote because I know how tough and unforgiving the game is and for Chibi-Goku asskickery.

Yes, mostly because its a highly entertaining run with the flawless fighting. Especially if you are a DB fan. Unless someone comes up with some revolutionary new path or bug abuse I don't see this being improved by much more than nitpickery.

Yes, because of the fast-paced action and the impressive combos.

AnotherGamer, your progress is so fast since your first post ! That's really impressed. I'll enjoy it tommorrow and then soon vote yes for sure. Because I had already watched your update many times before. I wonder what's the most difficult part when you are making it so funny. :)

Difficult parts...well, in relation to its lenght, I spend quite a few days with the autoscrolling stage since I couldn't really come up with a good idea to make it interesting after my main plan failed. Other than that, the 2 stairfights in Muscle Tower weren't fun, as the height difference makes it hard to see all the enemies at any given time, and the railings block thrown grenades from view. Few of the ! fights in the last stage were more or less annoying too, as the screens they take place in have large buildings in them, and if you screw up, you might end up with an enemy stuck on top of one of them with no way to reach them, but you have to kill'em to spawn the next set of enemies or advance further in the stage, leaving waiting there for them to kindly hop down as your only option. The pirate robot and Akuman were also pains in the ass, as their appearance and behaviour gave me a brainfart in regards of what sorts of juggle physics they'd follow: I initially though the robot pirate was too heavy to be juggled and couldn't be knocked down like most other mech bosses can't, and I thought Akuman would just air recover if I tried to juggle him the normal way. Shows what I knew.

Yatta! I watched it and liked it, like I told you before. A yes from me.

Yes vote from me. How many extra lives do you gain from those 99 hit combos anyway? Seeing as I remember your score reaching 30(0?) million, and you get an extra life every 100 thousand points... O_O
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

According to AnotherGamer, losing is faster than winning because if you win, the result will be the same except you'll be given a long cut-scene as well.

While it's been already explained, winning that and another battle accomplishes nothing: even if you manage to win despite the odds that hint that you should go and take a dive willingly, you still get a faceful of Ki, lose regardless and can't do anything about it. Plus even if you could win, it'd still take far longer than losing.

I just downloaded this timeattack/speedrun, but as soon as i load it in wmp, my screen flickers and i get 2 errors - Windows explorer as well as a WMP error - you know the popup that says such and such has encountered a problem and needs to close...my friend also gets these, so i am not alone...anyone else experiencing this or know what could be the cause?

Yeah, of all the people, I got the exact same error and thought it was because I hadn't defragged in a while and spent hours on trying to fix it, just like the last time. Turned out that the H264 codec was outdated, get today's build from http://www.free-codecs.com/FFDShow_download.htm . [Edited by Bisqwit] Made the solution a little easier to spot.

The movie has its lenghts, but that is due to the leveldesign rather than your play. Careful YES vote because I don't know if you maybe could've chosen a wider array of moves.. it sometimes seems like all Son Goku knows is multiple kicks into his enemies' faces.

Yes vote appreciated, although it's been published already. And yeah, I asked if people found that too repetitive earlier, but nobody said anything so I decided to go for it. Besides high combo counts, quick boss kills and ridiculous score make up for the repetitiveness.

The video crashes every player I try it with it, and it sometimes even crashes windows explorer and even drwatson postmortem. I tried the fddshow codec many months ago to view some video I didn't have a codec for (I think it had AC3 sound or something) and it made my system so unstable that I had to uninstall it immediately (I then downloaded a specific AC3 codec). When videos here started using the Hwhatever codec, I was forced to install fddshow again to watch them. Ok, no big deal, it was many versions newer and you could configure it to kick in *only* when a Hwhatever video was played. It seemed to work just ok, but now it's apparently crashing my system again. I'll try downloading the newest version mentioned above, but I'm getting pretty tired of this crappy codec which keeps crashing my system when something changes. Is it really so difficult for them to code it so that it would have some checks like "hey, this is a strange version of the Hwhatever format; perhaps I should issue an error message instead of just plain crashing"? The format may be superb, but the fddshow codec is crap. Well, I suppose I'll have to live with it. Edit: Installing the newer fddshow helped. Well, until the next time the format changes, of course.

I'll agree with the last statement - Attempting to play this video abuses numerous glitches in my windows explorer/watson that probably weren't intended :( Haven't had any problems with fddshow up until now, but not only will this video not play, my computer can't even open the still shot to use as a thumbnail, and can't even preview the thumbnail for the folder containing my superplay folder. Will try the other codec then re-download, I guess, but that was kind of a bummer.
YtterbiJum, on SMB3: I've tried 20+ times and it always desyncs there. Unless, of course, Genisto meant to die, use a star on the map screen, go in a pipe, and jump around till time runs out.

Are you sure you didn't get the newest version of it (dated 1st June)? I got it to work fine with it.

http://x264.nl/ have removed the 2005-07-01 build due to playback problems. Try the 2005-06-19 build first, and if that still doesn't play this AVI, use the newest build (2005-07-01) but expect other problems!

When installing the codec, unselect all the other formats besides the H2whatever. It causes least problems to me this way (because then fddshow kicks in only when watching H2whatever movies and nowhere else).

Except that Omega and AnotherGamer had talked. If someone were DB fan, someone would understand that why Goku lose the first fight against Taopaipai. Right, there is a story behind it.

This thing refuses to work. Every player simply crashes. Some players will show a vertical gray rectangle before crashing. edit: ok, now the new mario speed run crashes too. It worked fine 20 minutes ago :(
