TASvideos has always used bleeding edge technology for video encoding, always ahead of everyone else. Thus the next logical step would be to use the newest HD technologies, which are becoming increasingly popular. Thus we should use 1920x1080 resolution and 5.1 channel surround sound in all future publications. Perhaps we could use some "Now in HD!" tag in the videos.

Let's consider that choice when we get our first 35-games multirun, so we can put 35 256x224 windows to fit that 1920x1080 screen, and pack the whole cacophony into that plethora of channels. More realistically, perhaps you'll get that in a decade when some high-res game TAs comes out…

AngerFist is on his way to the 35-game multirun. Meanwhile, we can do what many major publishers do with 2D games: upscale + filter!

The resolution I can understand, and it sounds like a cool idea- the encoder could use HQnX, or some other filter, possibly one so processor intensive that it cannot possibly be used in realtime. But what good is surround sound? I'm sure you're aware that most consoles output in stereo, at best, so...?

Who cares? There are autopanning filters for audio, too.

There are surround stereo reverb filters which we could apply to the audio to make it sound like it's coming from some precise point in a room of certain dimensions. Wouldn't that be ubercool?

I don't remember alot of games being in native widescreen though. Gameboy in HI DEFINITION would look cool, and fat.

We can do what they do constantly with 4:3 movies: Just zoom it to fit the screen. (The upper and lower parts of the image will be lost, but that doesn't seem to worry anyone with movies, so why should it worry us?)

Well, Jet Force Gemini is a wide-screen game. All the cinematics are in wide-screen regardless of the game's configuration. I was planning on making those portions wide-screen should it ever be encoded. And get this: the video plugin does up-scaling, texture filtering and the game does in fact support surround sound! I think we have a winner here! Someone TAS this game! (Like, now.) Sure it'll be a 6 gig .mp4 video which demands at least 1.8 GHz of CPU power to decode and I'll need a small supercomputer to generate the video in the first place, but I think it'll be well worth it.

Not to totally buzzkill the sarcasm, but I watch N64 runs at 1600x1200 as it is, which is only an aspect ratio change away from 'true HD'. Just put some useless info or eye candy on the boxed out area on the side and you're in business.

that reminds me of that port of the sonic games to XBox Live. They praise the port to be of "HD resolution".... agreed... the picture frame around the blurry scaled image looks sharp and nice... crazy idea to call that HD. Then again, if it's 1920x1080, then it probably must be HD *sigh* Philip

I would prefer more effort going in to the quality of submissions and publications, rather than the quality of encoding. Also, less effort on useless threads.

I'm surprised at the number of people who took this seriously, and didn't realize it was a joke...

I didn't mean to imply I was actually going to do that with JFG. Widescreen yes, 1920x1080 and surround sound no. 448x336 and a bitrate that my modem can actually tolerate. The 6 GB figure was meant to be sarcasm (albeit probably accurate)

448x336 isn't very widescreen, though. 512x288, on the other hand, might be a good choice (unless there are 4:3 sequences in the game).

Well, then the widescreen portions will have to be letterboxed, as they were originally supposed to.

You can select an option to view the gameplay in widescreen too. But I don't know if that's preferable.
