When we first start watching TASs, and understanding how and why they were made there were a couple things we never thought we'd see, such as dying in a game, which is used in some runs as a shortcut. For particular games, we didn't think a certain technique or item would ever be employed, as it takes too much time, but then someone comes along and finds a way to use it to save time. Lets create a list of techniques/items we don't think we'll ever see being used in a TAS for a popular game, and will be genuinely shocked if someone finds a way to use it effectively. 1) Super Mario Bros. 3 - Using an anchor 2) Super Mario Bros 2 Japan/The Lost Levels - Backwards warp

I remember getting this reaction the first time I saw the long-distance version of the Backwards Long Jump in Super Mario 64 (as opposed to the version used to clip through doors, etc.) I saw the "Mario on steroids" YouTube video that demonstrated but never realized it had speedrunning potential. Boy was I surprised :) If I might plug my own work here, I also had a similar reaction when I discovered the current method I use for Revolver Ocelot in my MGS1 run - I really didn't expect to break the boss that much, especially because canonically the guy is an incredible shot (as in, bouncing bullets off walls to hit you behind cover and stuff) when he's not being a magnificent bastard and resident quadruple-crosser.

For most games that have a warpzone: beating/glitching levels faster than taking the warp.

At NES Arkanoid, it's faster to use the demo glitch than use warps :D

Isn't in the no-warp SMB3 run a star used to beat the boss of a castle by just touching it? Edit: If fact... itsn't this done at SMB2(U) also?

Coincidentally I watched the warpless SMB2u run today, they do use a few stars in there. And IIRC the warps run of SMB3 uses a star in the final fortress.

That's not exactly something you see... And for certain systems/games that actually resets the game. We see games that reset the game to save time.

I doubt anyone will ever make use of any shop in River City Ransom. The Isis Scroll is conceivably useful: it substantially increases throwing power. You even start the game with the requisite $20, so you wouldn't have to waste time gathering coins. The problem is that shopping is so time-consuming that to actually buy an item and use it would take ~40 seconds, for a gain that is probably negligible. Even if there were some way to underflow the money variables and buy Texas Boots or Grand Slam, they still might not be worth getting.
