Umihara Kawase (海腹川背) is about a schoolgirl with a bag of holding and a rubber fishing line setting out to rid the world of giant mutant fish.
This video plays the longest path of the game having only two bosses, aka. Bob's path, which you can find at the Field Map page.
The Umihara Kawase page has more information about this game.
The boss levels are quite long in this movie ― they can't really be sped up, but the author of the movie has done his best to make it worth watching.

ActRaiser (1990) is a critically acclaimed SNES game which combines two major gameplay phases: a god simulator and an action platformer. You play the role of a deity called the Master, who awakens from his slumber only to find that the human civilization is completely wrecked, and hordes of demons are roaming free. Player's role as the Master is to restore and help develop the civilization anew, by controlling it during the overhead phases through a bow-wielding cupid, who also repels mischievous demons. The second part of the role is to open new locations for humans to inhabit, and to deal with the catastrophes happening there, which usually have something to do with grotesque monsters. This is where the action stages are used.

Vice is a good-looking platform game with some autoscrolling parts where the player gets to control a car. The game is great fun to play because of its sharp and accurate controls, and also because of its nice graphics.
The run itself is very entertaining. Even if you haven't played the game, the game's fast pace guarantees that you won't get bored watching this movie. The author has aimed for 100% kills and 100% items in the autoscrolling stages, but getting 100% of everything isn't always possible without slowing down.

Selected comments from the author:
Prince of Persia 2 is one of the most challenging games ever made. Maybe this is because of the terribly imprecise control, the nonsensical puzzles, and the character's amazing inability to survive falling any distance. There are no pits with spikes this time around, apparently there were enough complaints about the ones in the original Prince of Persia, but unfortunately, non-spiky pits are just as deadly as spiky ones, and the new traps are far more sinister.

Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island is a vibrant, colorful and fun game that stars the popular Yoshi.
We recommend reading the author's comments, because there's a lot more to this movie than meets the eye, even though the movie is very colourful, actionpacked and full with entertaining tricks and maneuvers.
In other words, the very essence we tool-assisted speedrun movie makers enjoy. :)
Technically, the game is very exceptional on SNES due to its use of the SuperFX chip. The chip allows for many cool special effects that are otherwise impossible on SNES.
If you liked this but want even more Yoshi craziness, be sure to check out the warped completion.

Here you can see a revision of this game by nitsuja, 04:35.32 minutes faster than the previous run by mazzeneko. The strategy used was changed radically, using Raphael instead of Donatello and using dash moves more often.
The damage for every move was mapped out carefully by monitoring the internal values of the RAM, to be able to choose the best attack for every situation. Luck was manipulated to make some enemies appear in more convenient positions.

This unusual boat game includes racing to the finish, preventing swimmers from being abducted, disposing bombs, killing sea monsters and shooting targets.
Whereas the previous movie's goals went for both speed and points, this movie's primary goal is speed, and only gets as many points as possible when it doesn't waste time. For example, targets and swimmers are deliberately missed to reduce score-counting at the end of levels. Altogether, this is 54 seconds faster than the previous version.
Stray shots are used to manipulate luck.

The second Dragon Warrior game beaten as fast as possible.

Dragon Warrior is an epic RPG series which now spans 8 games across many systems.
The second game greatly expands on the first to include a party of three heroes
(all descendents of Erdrick and the hero of DW1) and battles that may include many enemies.

The world is much bigger and there are many big dungeons to explore as well.
Luckily there are new abilities and items to make this easier.
Enemies can randomly drop items when defeated and there is a lottery which
is the precursor to the casinos which appear in each later DW game.
Finally, you might notice that many of the enemies in this game appear
in later games, particularly DW8.

Final Fantasy VI (renamed to Final Fantasy III in North-American publication) is arguably the most famous RPG on the SNES console.
This movie plays through the game in little over 4 hours by the means of advanced analysis of the game engine, and the abuse of certain game errors/features that give the ability to one-hit-knock-out even the strongest enemies ― most prominently (but not only) the Joker Doom lore from Setzer’s slot machine.
A glitch involving Relm’s sketch ability was not used in this run. That glitch cannot be performed on this version of the ROM. There is another run using this glitch on the 1.0 version of the ROM.
The boss battles, including the last boss, might be somewhat anticlimactic in this movie due to the unusual attack technique, but besides being a very nice time attack/TAS record, the movie is a nice trip down the memory lane for those who have played this game, and a graphically and especially musically pleasing experience for even those who haven't. This movie was made with the English-language version.
We recommend reading the author’s comments regarding this movie.

Earthbound is a great RPG, designed by Shigesato Itoi in 1994-1995, and is also known by the name Mother 2.
It is best described as "random", in a good way. The game has a great emphasis on a humor, and indeed many things in the game are almost caricatured, from subplots to characters. It also has a versatile soundtrack.
Although this being a speedrun (tool-assisted at that), most of the plot of the game is intact, making this movie very entertaining to watch even as a TAS.
Details about each scene and decision in this movie can be read in the authors' comments.
This movie does not use a death as a shortcut. Although that was a conscious decision by the authors, what it actually means was bent to the extreme.
  • The main protagonist, Ness, suffers a mortal blow once. Due to how the game works, he did not die.
  • A teddy bear was disintegrated in a battle. Although a party member, it was an inanimate object, and cannot be counted as "death".
  • Near the end of the movie, a death-like event is part of the game plot.

NapstrPSX made an audio commentary for this TAS.

TMNT2 is a classic beat-em-up game with 4 classic main characters: Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Donatello. The latter is the only turtle used in this movie.
This movie is Baxter's new and improved version, which is an astounding 4 minutes faster than his previous version. Donatello has learned the secret ninja art of teleportation and... no, actually, a glitch that enables the player to move around extremely fast is used to hit all the enemies as soon as they come on screen. But most of the improvement comes from outstanding luck manipulation.

Shatterhand is a bit like Batman. However, Shatterhand is longer, has no walljumps, and is a lot laggier. This movie by JXQ is about 108 seconds faster than the previous version by Juan. Most of the improvement comes from finding clever ways to reduce the immense lag that this game experiences at some points.

The games Mega Man 3, 4, 5 and 6 are all the same. Eight robot masters are defeated and Mega Man steals their weapons. After some kind of distraction, Mega Man attacks Wily's fortress and it typically gets blown up. If you don't believe that's true, we offer this movie.
While driving home the point in honor of our first multi-game movie, Baxter and AngerFist prove that Capcom really has been making the same game over and over again by playing Mega Man 3, 4, 5 and 6 using the same input.
No attempt is made to synchronize the endings of these games. Mega Man 6 finishes first and Mega Man 4 finishes last.
Encoder's note: There are more encodes (labeled multitrack) available in the Archive collection. Track 1 contains the audio of all four games arranged in such a way that Mega Man 3 and Mega Man 5's audio are on the left audio channel and Mega Man 4 and Mega Man 6's audio are on the right audio channel. Tracks 2 to 5 contain the sole audio of Mega Man 3 to Mega Man 6 respectively.

Before Sonic the Hedgehog, there was Alex Kidd.
This movie improves on the previous movie by a whopping 79 seconds thanks to a new trick allowing Alex to ascend through walls Rockman style.

A very important part of Nintendo's history is being presented here in the manner of our website — as a tool-assisted speedrun.
Donkey Kong Jr. (read Wikipedia article), among with Donkey Kong, were classic games that were played by millions of players on different consoles, including NES, Atari 2600 and Game and Watch.
Although one would not expect a movie of Donkey Kong Jr. to be interesting to watch, except in the retro sense, this movie is actually quite surprising. The vines are cleverly utilized to move the hero forward faster than any member of the Kong family before or after this game.
This is a 6 frame optimization of level 4 compared to the previous movie by the same authors. The rest of the levels are copied without changes.

The Lion King is about a lion who becomes king. It takes about 17 minutes and is mostly paperwork, but it does involve some prancing around the Pride Lands.
Mukki manages to complete the game (and, subsequently, expedite the process of becoming king) over 30 seconds faster than the previous movie. The author does this using tricks such as catching ledges and glitching past leopards.
We have a TAS of the SNES port here.

In Duck Tales 2, you control a duck who can use his cane as a pogo stick. He and his family (the NPCs that this run does not talk to except once when forced) search for hidden treasures around the world.
The author, adelikat, completes this game a little more than 5 seconds faster than the previous movie by himself and Brushy. The biggest time-saver was skipping a cutscene in level 1. Expect a lot of pogo action, jumping from ropes and hooks and across spikes unharmed, and quick beatdown of bosses.
This movie does not get the best (100%) ending, but also does not get the worst (no money).

If science fiction is to be believed, the ultimate evolution for biological beings is to discard the physical body and become an entity of pure energy. For video game characters, it seems to be the ability to zip through walls. In this latest TAS by zggzdydp, Simon Belmont joins the league of characters possessing this ability.
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest is the story of Simon's horrible weekend without sleep. Two years after defeating Dracula, the hero is physically weakened by Dracula's curse. He must gather Dracula's remains and incinerate them at the ruins of Castlevania in order to end the curse.
This movie is 2 minutes and 23 seconds faster than the previous effort by the same author. We recommend to read his comments for explanations on how this improvement was achieved.

The Legend of Zelda - Link's Awakening is a classic Game Boy Zelda adventure. Link must travel across the dream world of Koholint Island, collecting the 8 Instruments to wake the Wind Fish and go home after a terrible shipwreck.
Swordless Link (the author), however, decided collecting instruments for a one-man band was a waste of time, so he skipped all of that and went straight to the Wind Fish (with a pesky boss battle in the middle).
The author improved the run by 11.22 seconds, which was mostly achieved by using a new route.
If you liked this, be sure to also check out the Game Boy Color version (DX), which completes all the dungeons.

The Lost Levels is the remake of the game released in Japan as Super Mario Bros 2; it is an exercise in Fake Difficulty, containing very difficult jumps, many enemies, problematic terrain, poisonous mushrooms, and, at worst, Koopa jumps over walls or across pits. Most of it is senseless rehashing of elements in places where they don't belong (like amateur hacks). It's so difficult to beat that Nintendo of America released a wholly different game given a Mario theme as Super Mario Bros 2.
Of all the games in Super Mario All-Stars, it's the only one in the set that saves your progress at individual levels rather than the start of worlds. It's that bad.
This movie, about 7 seconds faster than the previous, plays all levels, including the secret world 9, and extremely difficult A through D worlds.

Pipe Dream is a game about keeping unsolidified jello in tubes long enough for it to solidify. More or less.
In this movie, Explosion Pills places pipes faster than a plumber on fifteen cups of coffee and only goes as far as absolutely required to contain the goo.
Unfortunately, the annoying music played though most of the game is the "turbo mode" music, and since turbo mode makes the goo flow faster, it can't be ignored in a run that aims for fastest time. It's a good idea to just turn off sound while watching this movie.
This movie stops after playing though all stages once. After that, the set of stages repeats endlessly, not unlike Elevator Action and Circus Charlie.

Final Fantasy IV (renamed to Final Fantasy II in North America) was a revolution to the RPG genre. It was the first to introduce the active battle system, along with many other elements.
This movie plays through the game in a mere 2 hours, 53 minutes and 14 seconds. It aims for real time, but has a secondary goal of lowest in-game time when that does not incur an expense in real time. The in-game completion time is 1:59:28.
The author also included many easter eggs, or surprise occurrences, throughout the movie. These have been detailed in the author's comments. We recommend reading the comments regarding this movie.
Note: This movie resets the game console a few times, first saving the game and then loading it, so to watch it on an emulator, you will need an emulator that supports recording the console resets.

This movie was made with the original English-language version. The downloadable encodes were encoded with the Action Replay code 0495DCFF, which keeps the music volume from decreasing while the game is paused. This greatly reduces the annoyance factor of constant pausing during battles, which is done to save time.

Batman Begins is a game where Batman basically acts like a ninja. A few glitches, especially the mid-air jump glitch, speeds up a game otherwise bogged down by a lot of lag. The game's engine also appears to be recycled from other GBA titles, such as Splinter Cell.
Because the game was new at the time of submission, the author had no other runs and almost no walkthroughs to rely on.

Super Spy Hunter (1992) was originally released in Japan under the name Battle Formula (バトルフォーミュラ). The game has "become" a sequel to Spy Hunter, the arcade classic from 1983, already after its initial release — when the developer purchased the license from Midway.
Since the main character drives a wheeled vehicle, this game shows to be the rare kind of a variable scrolling speed shooter, where you can slow the car down if you can't keep up with the action (which obviously never happens in a TAS). The core gameplay holds true to its spiritual predecessor, but this time it's spiced up with stage bosses and various sorts of powerups.
This movie is a 1 minute 14 second improvement over the previous one thanks to increased precision, lag reduction, and better boss fighting.

This movie proves the benefit of sleeping in late. In a departure from most runs, which try to start as soon as possible, the author avoids any input for over two minutes to enable a faster route.
This Wario game is a fairly unique platformer, where you not only play as "the bad guy" but normal damage is replaced with various status effects like catching on fire. In addition, the use of these effects is needed to complete the game.

Ecco: The Tides of Time (1994) is the sequel to Ecco the Dolphin. It is harder than the original, and continues its bizarre science fiction plotline. You control Ecco the dolphin, navigating the waters, circumnavigating the time-stream, saving lost DNA nucleotide pairs, and finding key crystals, schools of fish and pockets of air deep down in submarine caves.
Ecco is capable of moving at very high speed but has little in the way of brakes. Turning corners without smashing into walls is tricky to say the least.
This run plays on the hardest difficulty mode.
Note: The multimedia file for this run is an MKV with chapters. This can be played in most media players, but if problems are encountered then please see the Downloads page.
