Speedy Gonzales? I'd say this: http://tasvideos.org/1349M.html - NES "warpless" Super Mario Bros (JPN/USA PRG0) in 18:41.7 by Lee (aka. HappyLee). Basically world 6 where he stood at the right of the screen and was jumping and shooting very quickly. That was fast. I'd also say this: http://tasvideos.org/1380M.html - GBA "100%" Metroid Zero Mission (USA) in 1:01:08.0 by Filip Roskvist (aka. Cpadolf). Since getting the speed booster, when wasn't Samus blasting through everything?

My vote is for SDR, he took some really potentially boring fighting games and made them incredibly exciting to watch. He knows what it means to entertain.

I add HappyLee for many SMB runs. adelikat for a dozen runs. FractalFusion for several Mega Man X runs. cpadolf for exciting Metroid runs. Lastly, Phil, for taking several runs which were thought to be optimized to the limit, and surpassing them (DK, BC). I think these 5 players provided 80% of my entertainment from TASVideos this year.

The lack of a multitude of TASs published for a certain category is indeed a problem. Instead of lumping them in places they don't belong, why don't we have a category for systems which had <10 publications for it? Those with 10 or more I think deserve their own category even if new. Edit: Looking over Sgrunt's list, it looks to me like we have enough TASs for both PSX and PCE to let them have a distinct award this year. Edit 2: This would mean lumping N64, Nintendo DS, SMS, and arcade, and giving the rest their own award.

I think you're both missing the point. We don't need a real demonstration, or mentors. We need something which really explains what TASs are in a friendly "this is amazing" and a "you can do it too" fashion, with some pointers on how to get started.

I've looked over a number of our pages: http://tasvideos.org/WhyAndHow.html http://tasvideos.org/FAQ.html http://tasvideos.org/Helping.html http://tasvideos.org/GenericTips.html http://tasvideos.org/CommonTricks.html Nothing here actually tells an uneducated person how to make a TAS movie. A new user who only knows some video games he played on his N64 or something comes here for the first time, watches a video or two, and thinks he wants to do the same thing for another game he has. But he has no idea where to start. We need a "Creating" page. Can editors please work on this? I'm thinking we start off by briefly explaining what emulators are, and how our emulators provide special features for TASing. Then with careful planning one can record themselves playing these games, using these special features, being mindful of our tricks and rules. We don't need a full A-Z on a single page, but we need something more coherent than random assortment of links, none of which give a full picture.

I don't know what the heck Sunsoft was thinking when they made this game. Batman doesn't use guns. Batman doesn't use projectile weapons worse than guns either. Yet here we have a game which has Batman doing everything Batman despises. I tried to make the text of the movie match how absurd this is. As for the run itself, it started off a bit boring, but the flying levels and auto scrolling levels were actually rather enjoyable. Nice job MiezaruMono!

Regarding the boss scrolls, could you perhaps jump later, this way you're at the peak of your jump getting them, as opposed to catching them lower down?

Excellent :) I believe the boss route needs improvement. Also, in Cossack's stages, there were more places where you could've taken advantage of the balloon or rush coil than you did. Obviously this has to be carefully planned with refills, but I think the situation can be improved. Takes ~21:55 as an example. I didn't test this, but if you were damaged and were able to walk on spikes, could you get past the whales in Dive Man's stage sooner?

This didn't color a dinosaur, definite no vote from me. Edit: I thought perhaps I was a bit too hasty after rejecting two other runs today, so I went to rewatch this. Guess what? It's even worse than I remembered. What were you thinking? You didn't control two players, you didn't use any super missiles, and as art goes, this sucked. This run deserves a new option in voting: "Please kill the author of this run for making something so awful". Or better yet, "Please kill the author's parents for making something which could make something so awful".

If you can find a site which has no time limit or file size limit on uploads, willing to accept our content, supports embedding the video from them on your own site, and has no whacky issues, we'll use it, just point it out.

We get 70% of our information regarding the world around us from sight, so I would much rather have a good quality video stream at the expense of audio quality. In fact, several people (myself included) hardly ever watch runs with the sound on at all.
I find audio extremely useful for judging a run aiming to obsolete a previous one. It's hard to "see" if something in a particular area was done slightly slower, but it's quite easy to "hear" the BGM to see if its later on in the music loop than the other run. Granted, this isn't applicable for every game, or can be inapplicable for certain parts of certain games, but when it's possible to use it, I always do.

Interestingly in the last level I found 2 ways to get across the bridge where Bowser (equivalant) is. Sadly it ends in death, even if you don't grab the axe and let the enemy cat do it. You're left bouncing on it's head with a screen lock preventing you from going any further. Although there is actually a way of going down the area 51 pipe. It was not to my surprise what the outcome ended up being.
The most obvious ways of getting across end in death. IIRC, you have to set up a series of events near the end. I recall something about springing on the ceiling, and getting one enemy to take out another.

How much do the judges pay attention to the voting, anyway? It's always been my impression that it's the comments (and, of course, the judge's own opinion on watching the work) that matter the most.
I only use the votes if I'm not sure. If I see the video is terrible, violates rules, or there's no place for it, I'll reject it. If I see it's amazing (based on entertainment choices, how well the runs plays the game, comparison to other published runs of the game), I'll publish it even if I see some people didn't like it. If I thought the video could be done better, but I know there's a lot of work involved to do so, and it was somewhat interesting as is, then I'll look at the votes and see if the people want it or not. Edit: However, when I'm looking at the submission queue filled with unknown to me games, and want to judge something, it's nice to see a confidence rating along with vote count on the side to know which ones are ready to be judged.

Is this MotionMaker account fine with falling under the TASVideos umbrella? I'm thinking of setting up some automated system to upload to some of these sites.

I thought that the basic idea of "one movie file plays n games" is that you can take game 1 and play the movie file with it (and it completes it), and then you can take game 2 and use the same movie with it (and it also completes it), and so on, which is cool. (The publications simply show all the game being played simultaneously.)
The idea is that one controller beats two games at once.
Warp wrote:
With your idea the same movie file could not be used to play different games (at least not without modification).
That depends on the movie file. And don't ask me about current formats which aren't designed properly. Obviously the movie file should have a button mask if'd to the hash of the game each particular mask it is used for in the header.

So I was thinking... ...and the wood started burning. It is perfectly feasible to take one controller and wire each contact to go to as many consoles as you want, and we currently have done this on multiple occasions. However, it is equally as feasible to wire it that pressing one button which registers as A on one console, registers as B or down on another console, or perhaps doesn't even register at all. It is just as equally feasible for us to rig our emulators to make one set of input be processed as a bit different input on each game being run. So how about it, anyone think they can do something creative with this?

I think they should go on both. And a player can rack up a whole slew of awards under their title. You know how other forums have ratings for how long a person has been a member?, or how many posts they have?, or karma? That's all rather silly. Lets award actual hard work for the betterment of our site, with actual achievements that are objective and quantifiable.
