I've moved a lot of older threads over from the Other Games forum which might serve as a few additional ideas.

After months of development, the emulator JPC-RR (binaries available in the TASTools repository) is now considered acceptable for submissions, allowing TASes of DOS games to commence again. For further discussion, see here and here.

Are you using the floppy.img I provided in the submission text? If that's the case, you can just put that into disklibrary as is.

The link in the OP goes to the Git repository for JPC-RR rather than the Google Code TASTools repository and does not host any builds; here is the correct link: http://code.google.com/p/tastools/downloads/list
The link has been fixed - thanks for pointing this out.

A 100% of Keen 4 would interest me (it's probably the best known of the series). If luck manipulation proves to be favorable, I'd absolutely love to see both X-COM games run.

With the glitched any% in the queue, we might want to consider a more complete run (100% completion, possibly?). This is a little shorter than 4 or 6 and not as varied, so it might not be the best idea, but it is an idea nevertheless. Thoughts?

This thread is intended to announce development work related to JPC-RR, a rerecording x86 emulator. Binaries are presently available at the TASTools page. The latest binary release is r11.2.

Not with the anaglyph encode; you could see if you could find a video player which would support 3D playback of the dual screen encode. I'll also be uploading the latter to YouTube in the near future to make use of the yt3d features (which support different colours of 3D glasses).

The repaired encode is currently deriving; it will appear in place of the old encode once that's done. While that derives, here's a dual-screen monochromatic encode: http://www.archive.org/download/VboyVirtualBoyWarioLandByAdelikatIn1919.5/vbwarioland-tas-adelikat_dualscreen.mp4

I made an error during the encoding process which results in low visual quality during the first part of the run; I'm going to redo the encode, and at the same time provide a monochromatic dual screen encode. I hope the latter is satisfactory (it will also let me make use of YouTube's 3D video feature).

Speedy and precise run, complete with gameplay mechanics seen on few other platforms (2.5D action - Tomba comes to mind). Yes vote.

Hacks no longer require prior approval to be submitted to the site; in that sense there has been a change to the site policy.

Or, you could use, say, the SDL builds of FCEUX. This is a recent enough FCEU movie that FCEUX should be capable of playing it back.

I really don't know what to think of this. On the face of it, it seems like something I would enjoy watching - the game short, fast-paced and has quirky gameplay mechanics, and the run is technically proficient and certainly builds upon the success of the run of the original game. Yet I don't find myself immersed at all in watching it, as though the run is missing something. Perhaps I don't ever get the sense that the character is ever in any sense of danger, or perhaps I don't understand the point of the game at all, but I just don't find watching this very entertaining. I grudgingly give this a Meh.

Hi! I have two minor problems with the encode: 1) The aspect ratio setting isn't present (a must for runs for consoles intended to be displayed on TVs) - when using mkvmerge please specify --aspect-ratio 4:3, or you can fix the present encode with mkvpropedit <filename> --edit track:v1 --set display-width=298 (where 298 is the appropriate width, 4:3 times the height). 2) Your subtitles obscure the action considerably. If you compare to the published encode you will notice that the subtitles are displayed at the top of the screen instead of the bottom; if you're using mencoder for your encodes you can set this with -subalign 0 -subpos 0. Apart from that, it is noticeably larger than Flygon's published encode (then again, Flygon is an experienced enough encoder that he is probably using additional techniques above and beyond what the guides are showing). I would encourage you to keep the above in mind and either try another encode for this run or perhaps encode something else (one of the other runs in the queue, for example, or something on our Unmirrored Movies lists).

Up to you. I personally prefer only to encode runs which I think are likely publishable (which isn't to say if I don't encode something I don't think it'll be published; runs that I encode are a subset of runs that I think are publishable).

I don't see the need to have this published alongside the 2P run, which flows significantly faster than this despite the disadvantages iherent in 2P gameplay (and the fact that the 2P run itself does not aim for speed at all costs). Further, the author of said run provided some criticism of one of your WIPs which seems to have gone unaddressed. I'm not well-versed enough in the game to point to many specific technical criticisms of my own (it inherently flows far too quickly for me to keep detailed track of what's going on) other then there are occasions when it doesn't seem like you are killing enemies as quickly as possible. Also, in the autoscrolling spaceship stage (I don't know which stage numbers are which or if they have proper names) you're making no effort to be entertaining; a very large number of enemies pass by without being touched. That having been said, the factors above, in particular being significantly slower than the 2P run, lead me to believe that substantially stronger optimisation could be done in this run. If you are intent on having a run published here, please take the time to respond to criticism and incorporate suggestions into your run so that your run can be optimised to the greatest extent possible; that's part of what we aim for on the site here. In the meantime, I will vote no.

My prior commentary stands, and I am glad to see that the improvement turned out to be significant. Re-yes vote.

Hardly. The state of the puzzle is randomised to begin with and it is not obvious without a lot of systematic analysis to determine the optimal solution to the puzzle as provided (even under TAS conditions), much less determining which initial states can be solved the fastest. We are not facing a situation here where the solution is fixed and quickly and easily reproducible by someone with a passing familiarity with the puzzle, as with another recently submitted run or some of the cited quirky game examples.

Rather fast-paced, and I can't think of many other 2.5D games of this sort. It has a bizarre charm to it. I vote yes. Encode is on the way. Also:

Good work with the encode. I am glad you got the aspect ratio setting right this time. Personally I think the encode is publishable, but as always that is up to the publishers. (And, of course, the run would need to be accepted for this to be published!)

I always encourage multiple encodes; it helps publishers ensure they can get the best quality video file to publish.

Ho hum. Another generic action platformer, and the presence of autoscrolling levels did not help improve my level of interest. I'm curious as to how you manage to kill the first two bosses so quickly, but that's enough to pull my vote above a definitive Meh.
