i played it using 2 controllers, not tool assisted, i could get to the twin shadow brothers, but they crushed me ( i had 3 and 4 energy bars, 0 lives for both.. ) 27 minutes to get there

one hand each controller, or most of the time leave the controller lying on the table and play only 1 character protecting the other one

The main problem in playing 2P with one person is that there's no fun in "accidently" hitting the other character.

pick mode A (you cant hit each other), thats the one i played. unless you want to do the refill vitality trick: kill friend that way you steal his life and his energy fills up, then friend kills you and he steals one life from you and your energy fills up. But you'll need to be extra carefull when playing this mode alone. especially on the fighting with spikes areas where you can easily through your friend into the pit.

Ah, you misunderstand--when I used to play this with my cousin, we would pick mode "B" and deliberately fight with each other, in between fighting the enemies. It actually was a lot of fun.
