As a kid I played Spritual Warfare to death. It seems to me that this would be quite a fun movie to watch -- the items required to finish the game are minimal (very little fruit, etc.) so taking the most direct path through a long and quirky game like this sounds like a lot of fun. But before I dive in and spend a lot of time with this, 1) Is any one else working on/planning to work on a Spritual Warfare movie? 2) Any advice (beyond that in the faqs) for this particular game? I've played around with making movies for the Bible Adventures game but they're not much fun to watch and the control is abysmal besides. But overall I'm fairly new to this. 3) Does anyone know of any documented programming errors for this game? I haven't found anything useful while playing and searching online for this hasn't been fruitful (no pun intended). I've seen some requests for this movie so I'm optimistic! Best, VMan

I haven't played much of this, but when I get some more free time I might look into it.

Not that I know of...

There are two different versions of this game, 6.0 and 6.1. It seems that nobody knows what the difference is, but I would guess that 6.1 might have fixed some bugs, so maybe you'll have better luck finding bugs if you use the 6.0 version.

I recently finished it, and planning the best route might be a little hard. But there's no leveling, and bosses are super easy. Be sure to grab a Banana!! As for bugs, I think I've experienced some weird stuff with the Raft... I'll have to check that out.

I investigated this hallowed game quite a bit (in terms of making a timeattack). But the reasons that I decided not to play it are that it would take longer than I had first thought, and there is the problem of collecting Spirit Points. It would be great to see it done, though. I have the notes for the route that I had planned, but I don't know whether or not it's feasible. I played through only about 1/4 of it.

I've played through about half of it at 100% speed to plan a route and here are some challenges/solutions that have come up: need spirit points for a banana (for final boss) and the jawbone (for the raft): I haven't yet found how to manipulate luck to get maximum points from enemies but there are enough baddies along the way to boss rooms to collect plenty of points. the angels that show up give you some but i think it takes too long with them need about 10 keys or so: I think the best way to get a key is to find one, then die and return to get another. keys are generally not along the fastest routes to boss rooms so this might be the best way (especially before the first two bosses so you take lots of damage from each hit) some bosses need lots of luck manipulation to defeat seemingly effortlessly. still working on this (I don't always have the patience for it!) walking: holding U/D + L/R makes the character walk faster but it's hard to go in a straight line...this does speed things up a great deal though. Arc: if you have a route you don't mind sharing, it would be appreciated!

I would have suggested that you manipulate devils to come out of enemies that you're walking through since they push you very fast for a few tiles in the direction you're walking. 1 spirit point isn't that much, so maybe in the cases where you can't manipulate a 5 it's better to get a devil for a speed boost. Also, bombs/pots can be made to explode instantly by putting them down then immediately firing a fruit.

Here's what I wrote in my notes. I don't know whether or not it works (it's probably incomplete), but maybe it will be useful somehow. Park - Pear (Apple?), Belt of Truth Downtown - Key, Keyhole, Breastplate, Key Airport - Key (5,4) Warehouse - Keyhole, Boots Hotels - Banana (Would the cheaper grapes work instead?) Shipyard - Samson's Jawbone, Key (3, C) (Raft?) Beach - The Sword of the Spirit Lost at Sea - Keyhole Woods - Helmet of Salvation, Key (A,8) Prison/Demon's Lair - Keyhole

So, this thread was kind of old, but making new threads is a big hassle. I recently played through this game for the first time in about 15 years, and it's actually kind of fun. I thought it might be even more fun to optimize. Many of the items in the game are not needed for completion, and there's very little scavenging for "Spirit Points" (money), so I thought this might turn out to be not so boring. In fact, I did a crappy little test run, and I made it to the entrance of the Demon's Lair in about 13 minutes, so this game could probably be completed in about 20 minutes or so. A few comments and explanations: -As far as I can tell, you only need a piece of fruit to hurt the Demon (the final boss). You can't reach him with a pear, but you can with a pomegranete, which has the second worst range (pear being the worst). -The Sword of the Spirit is not necessary for completion. It would be absolute suicide without it in an un-tool-assisted run, though. It's main uses are to uncover a huge shortcut in the Demon's Lair, and it's the only thing that can hurt some of the enemies in the Demon's Lair. -The Raft is not necessary for completion, and so neither is the Jawbone. That means you don't need to kill dudes in the street for 10 minutes trying to acquire 195 spirit points. The only advantage to the raft is that you could get the Sword of the Spirit. The jawbone is only useful to get the raft. Therefore, neither is necessary. -The Helmet and Shield merely eliminate damage you take, so they aren't needed. Although I ran into problems with not having the Helmet, as you will see (if you watch the run). -This run is purely a test to see if the route would work, and probably half of it was played in real time, which should be readily noticeable. So there's stuff like walking into walls, missing shots, etc. -This game also has an "End Game" option, which is similar to Metroid's. If you choose End Game, you're given a password and the option to continue or end. If you choose continue, you start with three hearts (Zelda style) at the entrance to whatever region you're in (Park, Shipyard, Downtown, etc.). This is very useful, especially when I have to backtrack after getting the Boots. However, if you're inside a building, or on top of a building (like when I'm getting the Breastplate), it transports you to the last door you entered, or something. It's not real consistent, but I do know that it wasn't helpful in those cases. -I have no idea what ROM I used, it was just called spiritual_warfare.nes. I do know that it's version 6.1, though, because that's what it says on the title screen. I'll get a less vague one in the future. Sorry. Basically, the route is: -Get pear (Park) -Get Belt of Truth (Park) -Get key (Downtown) -Get Breastplate [use key] (Downtown) -Get key (Downtown) -Get Boots [use key] (Warehouse) -Get key (Downtown) -Buy grapes (Prison) -Beat game However, I ran into some trouble, as I'll either need four more heart containers, or the Helmet to protect me from explosions. Otherwise, I can't enter the Demon's Lair, because of the forced TNT explosion right at the entrance. There are three heart containers that aren't too far out of the way, so I think what will happen is that I'll have to pick up those up. Also, I might just get a pomegranete instead of the grapes, but I'll figure that out once I actually make it inside the Demon's Lair. Any comments are welcome. If you think you have a better way of doing something, let me know; I'm not really an expert in this game. Here's the test run, up until I could go no further (at the entrance to Demon's Lair): http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/2011/Spiritual%20Warfare.fcm

No apple? I suppose it's not necessary, but I find it such a useful weapon because it can hit multiple enemies. Haven't played this game in about three forevers. Edit: Okay, I'm watching now and I see you make a number of mistakes. You did say it's a test run, so I guess that's okay. Just make sure you avoid these in the completed run: 1. You collect too many vials. You go out of your way to pick up some that you don't need. In that first room with four "7 vial" pickups, you pick up three and then pick up the fourth on the way out. You probably only need one, and it wastes time collecting the others. Later on, there are two "7 vial" pickups in the same room and you still have a crapload but still go out of your way to pick them up as well. 2. A couple of missed shots here and there. 3. In downtown, where you're heading straight south, it looks good, but at one point you move to the right to collect some spirit points and whatnot, but unless the movement of this game is particularly strange (which is possible) it wastes time to move east since you need to turn west at the most southern area. 4. I notice at a few points you actually bump into walls. Make sure you fix that. I'm guessing you don't care about the small stuff for just a test, and that's probably the reason behind most of the above, but just keep them in mind.

Yep, this run is purely a test to see if the route would work; I only used frame advance or savestates to prevent death. Otherwise I just kept going, regardless of mistakes. It appears I will have to get at least two extra heart containers. If I get two, I'll need to do some furious praying between TNT explosions, and also in Demon's Lair since there are 6-7 unavoidable hits I have to take, all of which cost a full heart. So that means a lot of extra Spirit Points, unfortunately. It will probably end up being faster to go slightly out of my way into Houses to pick up a third extra heart container, and not worry so much about praying, although either way I will need to do it at some point. I still haven't decided if the Pomegranate will work just as well as the Grapes against the final boss. The downside is lack of range, which means a much worse angle to get around that stone on the final boss. The upside is it costs less, so that's a little less time I'd spend killing stuff for spirit points.
