hey hey, or Technos samurai, its alot like RCR but more oriental. Its very fun, very colorful changes in scenery and the music is awesome. that would be very fun to play 2 player, and if you dont want to 2 player, the 2nd player is normally controlled by AI ^-^
I'd love to see a run of Jidaigeki, but it's a long game (in comparison to Monogatari) and I'm not familiar enough with it to make it..

Wouldn't a 100% run take forever? If you were trying to get every chip?

I'm leaving life at 1. It seems more impressive to beat the game with no Shield, no Life, no Heart Containers, and life at 1.

By the way, what strategy did you use against Carock? Did you beat him the easy way and stay on the edge the whole time or did you move around and use save states to you advantage to make sure the reflected magic always hits him?
I moved around and used savestates. It doesn't help much, because even when you know where he will appear next, you can't get to the right position fast enough.. a majority of the waves hit, but not everything. I also cleared the Temple on the Sea.. definitely some changes there from the US version (Mazura guards the fake wall and the guardian of the statue is Gemma Fencer). All the way up to New Kasuto and grabbing the last Magic Container, Spell, and the Magical Key.. The FMV is now 346 kb... grab it here.

Just killed Carock. I probably wasted about 30~45 seconds overall doing this sequence (Maze Island to Darunia to Maze Island again) from not having MP (and no level in sight, sadly) and from Carock's attack pattern being almost entirely random.. Anyway, as I'm paused at the statue right now, I need some style advice.. I'm not taking any damage for the entire run, so of course I didn't get Shield, Life, or any of the Heart Containers.. but should I level up Life or just leave it at level 1 and level Magic again and again to refill it / get extra lives (that I won't use)? I'm also thinking of making two future versions of this, both much faster. One will use UP+A and death, and the other will use the 'negative edge' glitches. Timestamps to come sometime later.

The run is fully edited and compressed now, and only needs a home. Is Suprnova the best public tracker? Should I start my own tracker? Any other suggestions?

Yes, what I described would be hard.. NP-hard, actually, but because the dataset is small you can still find an optimal solution. I was going to measure distances in screens. If ever actually coded, it would show the shortest route through the game (and the same program could be used for 2nd quest, too). But yeah, it seems to be a lot of work for a game that you're pretty close to getting "good enough" anyway.

There are two 100x100 avatars and one 85x85.. Kinda makes me want to change mine to my 80x100 one ^_^;; Anyway, I'm for custom titles that can be defined after a certain limit. THat way, it doesn't matter how silly the default titles are.

The full list of rules is.. 1 before 6 3 before 4 4 before 5 4 before 6 4 before 7 5 before 7 9 last arrows before 6 meat before 7 candle before 8 ..plus needed rupees before purchases Right? So you have a program that finds all possible paths, keeping in mind these rules, where to buy stuff / costs for buying, and where the Secrets to Everybody are.. ..then you have a program that uses a table of travel times between each place to find the time before the Flute.. ..then you have a program that figures out which Triforce pieces you have and finds the times after the Flute. Not nearly as complex as the TSP.

This is starting to sound like a mathematical problem.
It is totally a math problem! I might just actually break down and write a solution program in Scheme or something. I mean, you had that program that knew the rules for what orders are legal.. you just need to map those places onto the real 8x16 map and have it count distance between each place in screens, also factoring in where the Secrets to Everybody are and the shops that sell candle, meat, and arrows. Once you know how much time the upgraded swords save (without even bothering to figure out how long it takes to get them) you can add that in, too, to see if the cost of getting the overworld hearts and the swords is justified.

You can also do it per-case. Like, what you said about not knowing whether it takes longer to get White then beat 5 versus beat 5 without White versus beat 5, THEN get White.. time just that. Like I said, if you don't want to do a whole dungeon, time how long it takes to clear a room of Darknuts with each sword, then use that information.

Boco, yes the levels themselves are optimized. There are places (if I remember correctly) where two equidistant paths would take you to the same room. (Say, going up then right, or going right then up.) In those cases, I think accounting for enemy lag may be the faster way. For example, in Level 4, Michael went into a room with one of those blue four-headed things, then bombed right. In the Japanese guy's video, he goes to the map room, and bombs up. I think the latter may be faster just because it doesn't have to load that guy and the fireballs.
So time both routes. It should be easy to get there, and go through those rooms at optimal speed, so record both variations and see which one is longer for those two rooms (and all other locations like this). See, you say the dungeons are optimised, but then you don't have times for these things :-þ
Ramzi wrote:
The secrets to everybody are faster because you can get 100 rupees and only have to wait for the guy's text to load once. Whereas the gambling room you can only get 50, so you'll have to wait twice.
Okay, then we need to redefine the overworld route to get the Secrets to Everybody instead of gambling.
Ramzi wrote:
I have my doubts about even getting the white sword for level 5. This is how picky and stupid I am. Note, though, that I can't validate this, but I think just the detour (walk to the sword place, go in and wait for the guy's text to load, and then walk back) is slower than just fighting the guy's with the first sword. [...] Having said that, I'm not even sure getting any sword upgrade would be faster, but I'm probably wrong. The only place where I could see a better sword would make save a drastic amount of time is Level 9, because that level has more fighting in it that most of the entire game. So if we do want to get the sword upgrades, we want to do them as seemlessly as possible. [...] 11.L2 12.Rock Heart Container 13.White Sword 14.L5 If you're going to go left to get the heart container, you're gonna have to go right again. I'm sure you knew that, but just pointing it out. Also, to get the White Sword before level 5, you'll have to walk there and back. As I've mentioned, I'm not too fond of getting the white sword, but if you want to, you could get it after doing level 5, that way you could whistle wherever you want after getting it, and you can skip the walk back from the sword to level 5. Granted, you won't have it for the darknuts, but blah blah blah.
Like I said above.. time each dungeon with each sword using the optimal path, and make note of alternative optimal paths (where it's faster to go this way with this sword, but with a stronger sword it's faster to go that way.. are there any of these?). And then figure out how long it should take to get each sword upgrade from each point along the route, factoring in the overworld heart containers and what levels should be completed by then. You should then know when it's most efficient to upgrade, if ever. You may not like my method of optimisation, but that's your loss :-þ You could always just fight a room of darknuts, and use that as the time for each darknut room, or whatever, if you didn't want to basically time the whole game multiple times over.. just get an idea of how much time you'd save by getting / not getting a sword.

Lezard has the perfect method of capture on the Machine Intelligence System and the Dual-Container Alarm! And executes a beautiful performance throughout the levels. Except I think he takes some damage in unneccessary places, too :-þ And uses the Dirk a bit too often, but that's just personal preference. If someone were to combine the best parts of all three runs....

I got 11:30. But I'm not satisfied with how it looks like, so I'll publish it only as a supplement to Bruno's movie. It looks too unskillful - which is exactly what it was. It was training :)
It takes far too much damage, and there are meaningless jumps, and there are meaningless weapon-selects... all-in-all, despite the faster time, it looks like there's a ton of room for improvement. The other video looks flawless even if time can be shaved off by not killing enemies. Some comments, though.. isn't it faster to kill bosses 4 and 5 the way in the longer video? Also - I love how you handled Joker. That's the best Joker battle I've seen. It's probably the best part of your video.. Also.. you can jump straight up?? I've owned this game for how many years without ever doing that?!

Do we have the dungeons themselves optimised? That is, are there pretty much enough keys on the main path to everything no matter the order? Has someone timed just the dungeons, with each of the swords? If the route through the dungeons is optimal, we should be able to make those constant-time. Once you know how long each dungeon takes with each sword, you know when it's best to upgrade (when the cost of upgrading is less than the cost of not upgrading). I think the video should use IT'S A SECRET TO EVERYBODY rather than gambling, even though gambling would probably save time.. but that's just me trying to find an optimal route for actually playing the game ^_^;;;

SOTN can be finished in under an hour with Alucard, even quicker with Axelord, and in ~10 minutes with Richter.

Why not a Zelda 2nd Quest, if you'd rather not remake the first? Of course, that would take even longer :-þ Aside from that, I'd like to see Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. Score Attacks.

Also, I wish somebody would redo Zelda 1. All the information on how to do it the fastest way is in the Zelda thread, but no one seems to be paying attention to that.
I think that's just a basic outline for optimisation. I was thinking about the problem, and though I'd be no good at actually playing the game, I could probably find the quickest solution given time with the game and a few maps. The route in Michael Fried's video is horrendous, but he optimises it very well. Equipped with a superior route, I bet he could pull it off.

It's not a very long game. If no-one's done it after I finish this run of Zelda 2, I'll do it (though I'll use Kamen no Ninja Hanamaru, which has better graphics, 100% less pizza, and many many more ninja).

Now think about something like Mega Man X. That would be something fun to watch.
I'm actually planning 'clean' time attacks on both Rockman X and Rockman X2. I'm pretty sure I can get 100% completion on both in well under an hour. X2 takes a bit longer.. or maybe it's just me being less familiar with it. But anyway, if it weren't for the registration process on Twin Galaxies asking for demographic information, I'd record videos of them being played off a real Super Famicom and submit a tape to claim the records for them. Once I have a free hour I'll make a zSNES movie of Rockman X.

I'm already making such a video, using the Japanese version, Link no Bouken. So far I've just reached Maze Island at 29 minutes 15 seconds, with about 90 seconds of load time that isn't in the US version (it's a FDS game). And that's not the best way - I could've shaved off about a minute if I'd been smarter about where I pick up keys. (for those unfamiliar with the game, Maze Island is the first location after reaching East Hyrule, which is approximately the halfway mark of the game. The world record for 100% completion is 1:36 or thereabouts, and this video seems able to finish under an hour.. I don't know any record for minimalist completion, but...)

Using Famtasia, adjust the speed by Config > Speed > ExecSpeed. The speed is in percentage of normal speed, so 200% is 120 fps, 50% is 30 fps, etc. Make sure Max is unchecked. To record, use Edit > Movie > Record. During a movie, use F5 to save and F7 to reload - you will be rerecording from where you saved. It's a good idea to periodically pause the gameplay and make backup saves in case you need to "rewind" more than a second or three.
