Interesting. That explains everything.

This is so great! I love the new route and the overall optimized look to the TAS. Obvious yes vote. One question, though: How does the BitS skip work exactly?

I made my temporary encode with ffdshow and it didn't let me select a bitrate or anything, so I let it encode and ended up with 16 2GB .avis and a separate sound file. Then, I just put them all together in VideoPad Video Editor with bitrate of about 2048 and it produced a 302MB avi, which I uploaded to YouTube. Whenever I tried to set my own preset for recording, it removed the "Encoder" codec from the drop-down and encoded with no video, so that's why I used the preset settings. I'm sure there's a better way to do it, but I don't know much about ffdshow.

What are you people talking about? Anyway, I'll watch the run as soon as I can (probably in about 6-7 hours).

OK, well I guess it doesn't need HD. Nice encode, Mister Epic!

That's not the HD encode, is it? It seems to only be in 240p and pretty bad quality.

I can't wait to watch this, but I'm in class, so I'll have to wait about two and a half hours to get home and watch it on DeSmuME, and then I will vote. Unless an encode is made sometime soon.

I think you should probably do the run over. The members won't accept your current movie because they'll know by looking at this topic that it's unoptimized. You and AKheon could always co-author it.

and we have to redo Bowser’s fight in BitFS due to new discoveries, hopefully it’ll synch but it probably won’t… so that’s like 10 frames we’ll have to give up on
Take your time; everyone is going to want to see it optimized. You'll be glad later when it's fully optimal and you won't ever have to TAS the game again (or at least for a while).

You could also translate/explain the TAS using subtitles—whether built-in, .srt, or Lua-assisted. There, problem solved.
The only problem is that might be a lot of work for a long TAS, but if the TASer is willing to put that much time and effort into it, that would be the middle ground.

Thanks for the HD encode, feos! Very nice TAS! I liked the improved boss fights and the fall through floor glitches. I found this less repetitive and more entertaining than the published run. (Yes vote, but the run's been accepted anyway so it doesn't really matter.)

I think it's because Paper Mario 2 (and Luigi's Mansion, too) appear to be 30 FPS games. Dolphin doesn't adjust the frame rate accordingly.
That makes sense. So if I tried encoding a game like F-Zero GX (supposedly a 60 FPS game), it would dump at the correct speed? EDIT: After reading this over again a few months later, I see that I was mixed up. Paper Mario: TTYD is a 60 FPS game, and I've heard Super Mario Sunshine runs at 30 FPS.

When I record part of a GameCube TAS, the audio seems to go at normal speed, but the video appears to be sped up by 150%. I usually edit the video afterward and slow it down to 66% [~2/3] speed, and it syncs with the audio and looks normal. It happens on both games I've dumped frames from. This Paper Mario: TTYD video was recorded in an area with no lag and then slowed down to 66% speed, and it looks like normal speed. Any reason why Dolphin records such fast movies?

OoT though is done so out of order that the story doesn't make sense anymore so there is no need to be able to follow it in my opinion.
I agree. The any% run's publication text says the Japanese ROM is faster by 6.5 minutes, and that's just for any%. Using the Japanese ROM would save so many frames in an all quests run, and I think it should be used.

The TAS input window (created and implemented by Toad King) has been included in every Dolphin revision since r7621. Just go to the Emulation tab inside Dolphin and click TAS Input. The TAS input window will pop up, and you can set the joystick positions and press/release buttons. It's awesome and really helpful! I agree that the issues sonicpacker listed need to be resolved, but I don't see them as urgent. The current input window is all I need to work on Paper Mario: TTYD!

I haven't played this game and I honestly didn't watch the published run, but I found this pretty entertaining. I liked the minor glitches and how you used death as a shortcut in some stages. My favorite levels to watch were Woods Act 4 (Ride the Rapids) and the Museum levels. Good job improving this! Yes vote.

Wow, this was really fast and technically good. The game looks pretty bad though (no music?). Great job beating this game so fast. Yes vote.

OK, I've been working with HxD, and I compared a backup copy of my .dtm before it desynced to my longer, desyncing movie file. There is a difference of about 7000 frames between the two, yet the backup copy of my movie file is a few lines longer than the desyncing movie file. How is that possible? EDIT: OK, I found it was some problem with the movie file. I tried loading several different savestates from before my movie ended and recording from there, but it would always either desync in one spot or randomly end the movie in another spot. I even tried making a new movie and loading a savestate from my current movie. Well, I'm guessing my .dtm is corrupted, so I'll just start all over with a new one. I do think we need an editor for .dtm files though (eventually).

Thanks for the encode, marzojr! Well, I have to say the levels don't have much variety or visual appeal, not to mention they look really easy (bad level design). I'm going to have to vote No.

Days of work on my Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door movie may be lost because my movie desynced by one frame. Is there a program to edit .dtm files? TAS Movie Editor and Notepad++ don't seem to read the format and I don't know what else to try. I would really appreciate any help!
