I wanna thank you for this. It really adds to the movie to have the tricks displayed while they're being used, and helps a lot in the slower parts. I wish all movies could do this.

I got it just cuz it's a TG-16 run, and was pleased to see it's JJ and Jeff, a game I remember fondly. It's fast paced and there are tough sections where I remember that hesitating at all made the platforming and dodging enemies really tough... the best strategy was to just plow through as fast as possible. In the usa version they changed the farts to bursts from a spraycan. Did they really think people would take offense? >_< A much slower paced platformer that I hope someone does next: Legendary Axe (and sequels)

This was much more entertaining that I expected, I'd love to see more if it's possible. I liked the creative divejumps off monsters to get to higher areas, and the big tossing.

oh man, that does sound kinda slow. I'll watch anything someone is willing to make though. Unless it's a sidestroller version, without using backdash etc :P

oh, haha, I guess I see your point. That's true. You probably already have it worked out, but if you still occasionally get a codec error trying to play something, ffdshow + media player classic is a wonderful combination. FFdshow decodes everything so you can just double click your movie and sit back as it plays, and not hassle with which codec it wants.

That's encouraging about the PSX stuff at least. I know I can search by system among published movies, but Is there a way to search for just unpublished PSX movies?

It's looking grim for PCE fans T_T I never even noticed that rule about the emu needing to be free, AND have ports on mac, linux, etc. I kind of felt like now that we saw one PSX speedrun, I would be seeing a bunch more. Then again it hasn't been that long since we saw it. On the other hand, as far as I know the ability has been there for a while. So maybe it's unrealistic for me to expect much in the way of future PSX runs eh? And if people aren't bothering to speedrun PSX games, which has more emu support and 10 million popular games we'd like to see... what are the odds anyone will fool with TG16? :(

haha ouch dude, it stings. I guess speedrunners are supposed to be happy when they find a big timesaving shortcut but this is one where I don't blame you for being like... "#$%@#$@#$"

Awesome, I will check back for those updates. I dunno exactly what you go through to make this possible but it sounds like some hassle. Your fans appreciate it :)

Super, go for the single-class speedrun :) Unless you see some ways to majorly improve the calculator-flare strategy. It's cool you have looked into memory addresses etc. There are a lot of weird and fun combinations in that game and I wouldn't mind seeing more of a "playaround" too, maybe anything that's optimized for speed is doomed to be a bit boring. I have just put like 200 hours into FFT A2 and I hope someday to see a speedrun of that as well. There is no single "waste every enemy on the screen in 1 turn" cheap job anymore, though there are some powerful combinations. I think what might make that game interesting to speedrun is that there are only like 20 required missions, a ton of stuff is optional... and you really can't get good equipment and jobs early, they were pretty careful to make sure you only unlock stuff when you're meant to. And you have only certain races available etc. So it's unlikely any speedrun will have nothing but 6 guys with the same race and same equip and same job. There'd be some variety.

Dude! You can't hate mkv's, they're awesome. Without getting too technical, it's pretty much the perfect format because it's free, open source, and allows you to put every audio or video format you could ever want into a single file... from mpeg2 to divx to h264 to whatever.. and any audio you want too, mp3, ogg, aac. Plus subtitles, extra language tracks, chapters, embedded subtitle fonts, and a million other little things. I know this is the kind of topic that can start people arguing so I apologize in advance for the fanboy-style defense of mkv :)

yeah, I guess that's a good point :/ Still, it's a lot of work, I don't mind someone wanting to get paid for it. I guess we're lucky that the vast majority do it for free. One thing though, the watchers can see the movie without paying for it, by downloading the the AVI/MKV instead. So it's not entirely hopeless.

Simply awesome. I stumbled on this a few days ago before it was published and encoded, I dunno how... was searching for something else... and I thought "LordTom, didn't that guy do some other really awesome stuff? And didn't I used to love this game on my friend's Amiga?" So even tho I normally hate to do it, I went fishing for the rom and appropriate version of snes9x to watch this. I was immediately reminded why I hate doing it, it was a real pain finding that one specific version, and of course other versions desync :P From my browser cache I think this was the link for the correct one: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?bjxw3im0pvo Anyway, fantastic job, and now I can see you also tackled the sunsoft levels. Looking forward to finishing my dl and watching those. PS: I'll second the idea that this deserves a star. Even if there are slow patches, the efficiency and clever solutions are outstanding.

Just bumping this to say that since we now seem to be able to TAS nicely with PS games, I'll second this. I will say that I think there's already one on youtube and it seems damned efficient. Basically the author uses some repeated skill to learn all the JP necessary to get the calculator job in one or two battles, then makes everyone a calculator, then just flares every enemy to death for the rest of the game until victory. I didn't catch what combination he was using (height-prime flare maybe?) but it hit every enemy and didn't seem to hit him, and they all died in 1 round usually. To be honest it was a bit boring. Not sure how one could be made interesting, there are some fun combinations in the game. Maybe do one of the single-job challenges as a speedrun?

So far I like it a lot. Something I was wondering about, I used to jump and spin my way through the game on full turbo also, and I think I remember (my memory is rusty)... is it maybe a hair faster to not use full turbo speed on spins, like maybe play with the timing between spins? Maybe that just increases the vertical drop rate but doesn't help the horizontal movement. BTW, it sounds like the emu is ok for TASing, but you might be interested to check this out: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=190733#190733

Howdy... I recently was inspired by the first PSX video here to write to the developer of Magic Engine and ask him how he's doing with the record function on his emulator. I told him a bit about the TAS community and what TASing is about, and basically asked him if he'd make the recording function happen and if he could make it "TAS-friendly". He actually wrote back and said he would :o He seemed to like the little bit I linked him to on this site and I'm hoping that the next version will have a nice set of recording features that will TASing easy for TG-16. PS: I know at least one other emu has working recording, and I hope that works out, but I really like MagicEngine (enough that I paid for it). Not sure which is better in terms of timing and compatibility, but I hope people will support it if the author actually implements a feature request like this :D PPS: I don't want the guy to get mad at me, he didn't make any guarantees or promise a time or anything like that. So I hope nothing gets back to him like... "SOME DOOD SAID U WERE MAKING RECORDING WHAIR IS IT????". My fairly elderly computer plays it fine with media player classic. If you aren't using FFdshow to decode everything, probably you should try that. And if you already are using it, in MPC you can switch it off and set it to other decoders. That cartoon as probably the most obscurely nerdy joke ever. I love it. Like, if I hadn't seen this video recently, and seen the cartoon in this thread, I wouldn't get it (despite beating the game years ago). Props to the author for doing a fine drawing of drac :P

I'm just a casual watcher who doesn't ever post here but I had to say... 1. I am so glad we can finally TAS PSX. I don't know why it took so long, I guess the emulators weren't good enough until now, but I'm looking forward to more. Especially glad this game was first.. when I thought of PSX games that have to be TASed, this was always the first game that came to mind. In fact the only other post I ever made I am pretty sure I mentioned hoping this game gets done. 2. Without it being a source of argument, I hope more versions are done. We did a zillion versions of super metroid and the like, and I found every single one of them entertaining, including all-items and non-glitched versions. Since you get pretty nice speedy movement options right at the start of SOTN (better than Samus' for example) I bet a 100% would not be too long at all, even without warping through walls etc. 3. Really nice job on the run and the encode's pretty nice too. I saw some old youtube attempts at this game, probably by someone else, and this just blows them all away. Thank you~

I've had MagicEngine 1.0 for years now, and I see a greyed out record option. Does anyone know what's up with recording on it? As an emulator it seems excellent, nice GUI and every game I've thrown at it works great, and they feel like the real thing in terms of speed (yeah I got a TG-16 still collecting dust). I don't know much about programming but having something record keypresses and then play them back within the rom doesn't sound very difficult to implement. Is this emulator not considered much because it costs money? Are the others out there just as good? I see he has an update posted just 4 days ago so I know it's still being actively developed. Maybe if people clamor for some recording tools it'll get done...

I registered just to say I'd love to see this done. I owned the console long ago and there are a lot of games that would make really entertaining TASes. So I hope the project is alive. Games: I'll second Castlevania. There are a lot of nominations for bonk. I remember that with the attack button on turbo you could simply do rapid-fire air flips and skip through a lot of the level. Maybe that'd be slower than the direct route, dunno, but it'd be neat to find out. Legendary axe 1 and 2... bloody wolf... various bomberman games (unless they're already TASed on other consoles)... ninja spirits, which has the feel of ninja gaiden... fighting street... kieth courage... Devil's Crush... I dunno, maybe this would turn out to be dull and it'd be better as a playaround that shows off all the bonus levels etc.. You need to play for an awfully long time to get the score maxed out, but maybe someone can find some combination of multipliers and bonus levels that makes it quick. One of the best - JJ and Jeff. I remember this game as being very fast, and having levels where the only way to get through a series of tough jumps is to simply ram forward at full speed, and everything seems to time itself. Even some of the shooters would be pretty entertaining. There's a lot of room for playing around in games like Blazing Lazers, which had lots of weaponry and some easter eggs.
