I just found this on YouTube that's faster than the published TAS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzbYRCEgIsc Interestingly enough, it doesn't require getting coins for a 1up as the death trick isn't required. It also skips a few areas. Edit: I've been reading through the old posts. I don't have the hack so I wasn't able to test, but I noticed Bisqwit added a movie in this thread that fits this movie's description and has a similar time frame. Did this person steal Bisqwit's movie and claim it as his own work?
It says in the submission text (http://tasvideos.org/866S.html) that the run wasn't necessarily the fastest, but instead was created to demonstrate the TAS in a good way.

From what I see, there are two main arguments here: People who believe the run is publish-worthy argue that due to the fact that this is such a mammoth improvement over Guano's run it deserves to be published, regardless of the lack of optimization and polish. People who believe the run should not be punished argue that despite the fact that this TAS is similar to Swordless Link and AKA's 1 star sm64 run in terms of innovation, it doesn't hold up to the standards set by other TAS's on this site. The run itself is an amazing demonstration of programming errors and sequence breaks. It's not an amazing TAS. Considering that this is a site for TAS's first and foremost, I'm voting no. I really enjoyed watching this run, but the lack of optimization doesn't hold up to the stringent standards of the other speedruns posted here. I would love to see a more optimized version of it, though >:3

Yep, I've just finished planning out all 70 stars and the routes that I'll take around the castle. BBH and VCUtM are still out, but more DDD and WDW are in. Basically, no star that I get is over 50 seconds non-TASed, and the vast majority are under 30 seconds.
This is quite an arbitrary goal. Please tell me how this will differ from the 120 star run? Recall that even the CCCless run was not well-received (though I really enjoyed it). I don't think a 70 star run is worth doing, especially when the 120 star could use a new run.
I agree. It would be more worthwhile to start work on a new 120 star run than to do a 70 star run. With the ability to beat the game with only 1 star, this is essentially moot.

Yes vote. At first I wasn't sure that this was the best choice for the TAS, but by the third level I was quite entertained. I've never played the world is not enough, but this was well done.

The SDA 100% run uses resets many times, IIRC. It's a very large shortcut. Frankly, I have a concern about the entertainment factor in this run, specifically about a 100% run, but moreover about any run that's more than an hour or two: Donkey Kong 64 combines relatively slow movement speed with large worlds that have a very large number of objectives to accomplish. This in comparison to say, SM64, with fast movement speed, or GE64, with small worlds and comparatively fewer objectives. Also, IMHO, to play GE64 and SM64 with a high degree of precision is very entertaining, whereas the same degree of precision in DK64 would be lost amongst most of the viewers.

oh fine, I'll have an encode up within the next 24 hours.
Is there a thread on how to encode avi files? I tried to tool around with it a little while ago and it quickly became apparent that I had no idea what I was doing. I have lots of free time, so I don't mind the time it takes. If there isn't a faq, could you tell me how to make them?

Given that the new one is not worse than the existing one, I see no reason to not to replace it.
Consider that encoding a video for this site takes a minimum of something like three times the length of the movie. Consider that the end result of this would probably be less than 1% different from what we already have on the site. And most people who download it probably wouldn't watch it. (Note that I am not even factoring in the work it takes to make a torrent and publish the movie, because I don't know what all that involves)
To turn down the run on the basis of it being too time consuming to publish is ridiculous. How many hours, comparatively, did it take to make this TAS in the first place? Many more than the four or five relatively straightforward hours it would take to encode the movie and make a torrent out of it.

I'm excited to see the next WIP, I played this game a lot when I was younger, and I've been waiting for some new progress ever since I saw the first few levels done.

Noone will notice the improvments, not to mention there's nothing to keep this run interesting anyway. IMO pokémon games aren't games for TASing, nor are any RPGs where there is no action. (I repeat, IMO). Although, it should be accepted as an improvement, since it is no less entertaining.
In that case, almost every single RPG TAS would be unacceptable. I don't watch runs like this one and dwfm's dragon warrior 3 run because I want to see action, I watch them to see the fabulous luck manipulation and extraordinary forethought that goes into them. The changes between the previous run and this one are pretty significant, IIRC: the previously published run used kyogre and marshtomp almost exclusively, whereas this one utilizes machop and its forms all throughout. To dole out No or Meh votes simply on the principle of the game TAS'ed is sort of counterproductive, IMO.

I'll be damned if majora's mask isn't one of the most twitchy games to get playing. For those who haven't been following the thread, to get the movie to play in mupen: 1: Load The Legend of Zelda - Majora's Mask (U) [!] rom 2: let the movie play up until the screen where you choose your name (only a few seconds), and let it desync 3: close the rom, and open it again 4: load the movie, and enjoy Now, if you've already played the game or have watched a previous WIP or something, when you load the rom you'll probably start in clock town on the second day or something like that. In that case, you need to go into the mupen folder, into the save folder, and delete the majora's mask save there (for me it appears as a winamp file - dunno), and then follow the steps above. I hope that covers it. I'm going to watch the movie to make sure that Rice's doesn't actually make the whole thing go to hell and desync after the first few minutes edit: just got a desync, switching to jabo's. edit: desync with jabo's, trying rice's again EDIT: silly me using 1.6. I should have learned my lesson by now and just have used 1.52 like it says I should. /sigh

I have almost no knowledge about dragon warrior 3, or for that matter any of the dragon warrior games besides dragon warrior monsters. I've never played them, but I did watch your older TAS of this game, and while I had very little understanding of what was going on before, and perhaps even less now, I still very much enjoy watching you tear through monsters without prejudice. Highlight for me was watching your magician (or wizard or..man I must sound stupid. The magic guy) get something like 50,000 experience points. Anyway, yes vote for massive time improvement and considerable entertainment improvement (imo) over your previous run. I recommend:

Do to poor planning (on my part, it won't happen again), we accidentally got three stars that we pretty much have absolutely no use for. Anyway, we've redone WF (we couldn't hex edit because the message at the beginning kept desynching it), and TotWC, PSS, and CCM are hexed back in.
any chance of a WIP being released ? we're all anxious to see more action

Also, I still mentioned trading Orson's weapons to Ephraim at the end of turn 6 before dropping him, which will probably save a pitiful 10 frames or so from your current version (the time it took to change Orson's equipped weapon).
Sorry, didn't notice that. Given that Ephraim's group will have to do some movement in chapter 8 anyways (as enemies will carge at them whether I like it or not), I'll have plenty of opportunity to trade Orson's weapons away from Ephraim, but I don't know if I'll take that opportunity. On the one hand, if I will be trading during chapter 8, it doesn't matter when Orson gives away his silver sword, as it'll take the same time to give it to Ephraim or Forde. So I just need to decide if I need the sixth javelin. Buying another from the shop is I believe out of the question, as it will be sent to storage. I think I also get a short spear some time during Eirika's route, though that may be a drop from an enemy I won't be killing, and I know I get a javelin from Tana in chapter 9. So 7-8 ranged weapons, over 10 chapters...I think I should be fine, given that some of those chapters are 1-2 turn victories. So I guess that means I ought to trade the silver sword to Forde, making me redo from midway through turn 2, same as last time. And here I was, hoping I'd be able to keep up through the beginning of turn 3. Oh well. At least I'm starting to get really good at redoing this chapter.
At least by the time you finally finish this chapter you can say you made sure it was as perfect as you could get it [=. I'm enjoying the WIPs, though I've only played the game once - though it was for like sixteen hours. I kept retrying the levels because I didn't want anyone to die

I don't think this is a good idea, the recently published quad was accepted because if was somewhat novel (as in the first). Don't expect people to be so warm to this idea second time round.
I seriously think that the entertainment value of a run like this should be considered before any real work begins on it. While it sounds like a good idea on paper, it's hard to watch more than one run at once, and the sounds overlapping isn't particularly enjoyable either. Personally I'd rather see separate runs that obsoleted the current wario games.

This site would not accept such a run, but if it is just for fun than knock yourself out. Slowdown in snes9x is usually the "-" and "=" buttons, but frame advance, which is "\", is much better.
If a run had arbitrary rules that made the game more interesting to watch, why wouldn't it be accepted? This site is about "entertainment."
The trouble with runs that have unusual goals or aim solely for entertainment is that there often very hard to obselete, since it can be quite difficult at times to remain constantly within relatively unclear goals or could pose problems much like the River City Ransom has caused or pose an impossible obseletion like the SNES Mortal Kombat movie.
why exactly is the snes Mortal Kombat movie inobsoletable (sp?)?

No, he means that if on that frame you can't pause, then that frame is lagging. It's a good idea, theoretically, but I wonder if pausing the game would eliminate some of the lag that would otherwise be experienced normally?
