from what I've read and personally experienced, whenever you plan on playing back a movie, close dolphin and reopen it, then do the playback. also, make sure that frame advance is not accidentally enabled, and if you use the memory card instead of a dummy/no card, if the game needs to reformat the card in your replay, make sure to delete your previous card. that's all I can help you with. some games just outright hate being played back, but I've only had major issues with Wii games, all GC games I've tried so far work most of the time.

Is there any method to watch the RAM of a game other than the supplied Cheat Search in Dolphin? (r7718) I'd prefer something that updated dynamically with the game and can track multiple addresses at the same time (unless I'm missing something, and Dolphin can already do this). Right now I have to rely on searching for the address with the cheat search, then change the comparison to unknown and hit "next scan" to get the addresses to update. the only thing I can do to them after they are found is to create an AR code, which doesn't show what the address currently is, instead it shows what you chose to let the code set the address to if you activate it.

I've lurked for a while and been reading a lot of the comments, but have only just recently actually made a forum account, so I figure I'd put forth my opinion. First off, yes, TASs are about entertainment, not pure speed. That being said, there are very basic rules already set in place, and I'll be a dick and quote them directly.
If it exists, use the (U) version of a ROM unless there is a good reason not to (as an example a shortcut/trick which only works in a different version, or superior music). Good reasons for J over U A big time saving trick or glitch that isn't possible in U Less in-game lag vs U Marginal reasons Better graphics Gray area Less fade-out lag J vs U Bad reasons for J vs U A shorter title screen A shorter text
Abeshi's run that was published to this site was only (J) for a different reason. It was his primary language, not english. He didn't even plan to post it here, he was politely asked to, and so he did so. does he plan to post his next one here? maybe, but that doesn't mean anything now, since it hasn't happened yet, and that can be argued about when and if he publishes it. Because his reason of using the (J) version wasn't because of the shorter text, it was a non-issue, and even when it was beaten, a special note was made explaining that it was even faster than it looked due to text speed. If the next run is (J) and it is accepted, you can expect another similar note on it explaining that it's actually slower than it looks because of the faster text speed compared to (U). on that subject I should note that I did a bit of research. first off, votes alone don't get a movie published. a movie can have 100% yes votes, but if the judge/s feel that it shouldn't be accepted, it's not accepted. the voting process is simply something that those judges partly base their decisions on. Don't like that? the US elects presidents that way. Now, I browsed Abeshi's publication thread for his movie that was accepted, and here's some of the notable quotes of the judges I could find and their reaction towards it (also, I'm basing "judge" off of the people in the judge group on the forums.) Yeah right. In case you missed it, part of the reason this got published is that no one believed your movie would ever come out. If you hadn't noticed, adelikat and others had been desperately trying to get the other movie off the site. There was the attempted 'grue obsoletion' which was rejected by a majority of the site. Then, they farmed THIS movie from a completely different site. Perhaps if there was any believe your mystical, wonderful perfect movie was going to happen before the year 2020, this movie would have been rejected. Really, if there is anyone you should 'blame' for this movie being on the site, its you. But, you are Mr. Perfect. I'm sure you'll continue your passive-aggressive 'protest' against this site, because YOU didn't get to obsolete a 2.5 hour movie. Boo-friggin-hoo.

I think your conclusion involves a misconception. For publication purposes, time gained by text speed is irrelevant.
You are making it sound like you wanted to do the J ROM this whole time but didn't because TASVideos would reject it. Is this true? The majority of the OoT 'fans' would prefer a U ROM even if slower than a J ROM regardless. I'd recommend basing your ROM choice off them not what this website will or won't accept. In the long run, it will make you and the audience most happy. Or perhaps you are using the J ROM for a second reason. But I would hope you wouldn't do a monumental amount of work on a ROM you don't think should be used and would disappoint your audience just as a protest against a decision made by our website.

I find it very amusing and puzzling at the same time that so many people seem to have no comprehension of the idea of exceptions to rules. Particularly when this entire site is dedicated to finding ways to circumvent rules in games.

(here's a link to upthorn's post) no other judges posted on the thread. so in general, no matter the votes, if you publish a (J) run that is only chosen for the shorter text, it will very likely be declined. granted, there will be a long discussion, but accepting it would set an precedent, unlike Abeshi's run which was merely an exception to the rules due to extraneous circumstances. there are no guarantees about any of this anyways, if a decent argument is placed for why the (J) rom should be accepted, it may very well be. Now then, I'm going to go back and pull a word from the top of my post. "opinion". I'm not going to further argue my point, as my opinion will not change, and honestly doesn't matter in the long run. It's the judges you need to get to accept the publication, not the viewers.

at minimum, a 100% run requires doing the game twice. you could consider the 2nd time a New Game+, since while the areas are the same, the creatures will be slightly different. To beat a 100%, someone merely needs to get all 150 mutations, and you automatically win. The primary problem is that to do so you must also finish the any% run and then continue the game after the credits end. To do an any% run, you simply need to beat the killer cubivore. to do this, you need to have 100 mutations, at which point you get teleported to the boss rush, and after beating all bosses, you face him (and 4 colored cubivores, I'll have to find out if you need to kill them or not, if not, I'll just attempt to skip them). this is possible on the first play-through, but only if you very carefully choose what to eat and when. on the other hand, if I skip getting 100 by the time I end the first play-through by not going after the more annoying mutations that may cost time, I can get some slightly easier lower-limb count mutations, but to do so might cost me too much time with cut-scenes as well as the loss of a usefull EZ-mutation. Right now, I'm planning it. since it's a TAS I should never get hit if I don't mean to get hit, so I can ignore killing excess for exp (to increase my stomach, and thus HP), collecting scar points (increased defense), and collecting hump points (to increase the effect of healing). I have to consider whether taking the time to gather horn points for the bonus to attack is worthwhile, both the cubes I can collect and the training stations. There's also the matter of the tounge, which allows eat-n-run, allowing me to sometimes skip the animation for eating (but not always, only really works on weaker creatures, so it might not be worth the time). I also can either choose to collect rejuvinators to allow me to heal at any time, but to need to would be might be seen as sloppy, even if it saved a bit of time. As for what mutations I take, I have the choice in the end of yellow vs. grey. yellow is slower but stronger than grey, but grey is of course faster yet slightly weaker (they're both the top attackers) more than likely grey. I shouldn't need lovebits if I can correctly manipulate luck to make sure all females (or at least the ones I need) bear children, but to do so, I need a working rom/memory watcher, and the cheat tab supplied with Dolphin doesn't update adresses dynamically, only when you refresh it, so I need a better version. speaking of luck manipulation, getting a slot token would do wonders there, allowing me to pick exactly what colors I want (though not type sadly), so all the more reason to get a working rom/memory watch. The actual playing will be rather simple since the camera controls are nice; it has 8 fixed locations around you, so little in the way of figuring out complicated angles to be moving at has to be done (except right after certain cutscenes where the camera moves a bit). Edit: after thinking about it, I'll be doing a 100% run, but I'll set aside a .dtm that ends after killer cubivore as well, since looking at my plans so far, a 100% run's play-through to 100 mutations is exactly identical to an any% run, so while a 100% run will be longer than an any% run, the first 100 mutations will be the same length of time for both. to facilitate this, I've re-optomized my main menu to format and save to a memory card instead of having no memory card. this'll force viewers to delete their memory card manually before playback, but it shouldn't be an issue otherwise. For minor entertainment (and because I noticed it in the movie rules) I chose an actual name as opposed to "A" because the game isn't enough of a frame war yet to need to lose the entertainment of the character's name. still chose something short though, but it's fitting for the silly game. almost set to do the actual gameplay, just doing a non-TAS run to get my bearings and make some makeshift maps and layouts to make finding stuff I need easier.

Thank you for the helpful links. I had already browsed most of them by this point XD. I tend to be overly cautious when I do anything, so I tend to do a lot of research before I take on any task. Yep, I've already disabled dual core and idle skipping, I made sure to follow the suggested config on the GC/Wii emulation forum. The only thing I really need at this point is a working RAM/Memory watch for Dolphin. I remember reading that Dolphin isn't programmed to accept third party support, so the only thing I can think of to do something similar is use CE to follow the emulator's RAM, but that likely wont have the same results. Edit: I'm stupid, I just remembered that the cheat section of the emulator also lets me search ram values. Edit again: bah, doesn't work the way I though, it's of no use to me.

I apologize beforehand if there's a duplicate thread, my previous one was eaten, and I'm not sure if it'll show up again. anyways... I've got Cubivore to work in Dolphin, and I've already optimized the starting menu (with no memory card) as best as possible, but I've saved my work right before I take full control of the character. Just checking to see if anyone else happens to be working on it at the moment before I get too in depth on this project. And if no one is, would people prefer to see a 100% run or an any% run? 100% would be easier for me to do, but much longer and repetitive; the any% run would be much tougher to optimize and plan, but would make for a medium to short game (I'm estimating an hour and a half max, most likely an hour to maybe 40 minutes if I can plan it right). In the meantime, since glitches aren't well documented for the game, and there's no TAS or SDA run to compare it to yet that I'm aware of, I'm going to fool around for a bit to see if there's anything special I can do with it being a TAS (primarily I need to find out if I can sustain sprint indefinitely, otherwise there's going to be a lot of hopping)

Just a short while ago from this post, I posted a new thread on the GC/Wii forum regarding a certain game. It posted successfully, and when I went to go check the rest of the forums, my thread no longer existed. I figured maybe I had posted in the wrong forum, but I checked and it was definitely the right forum that I was checking. I then checked my messages and my email to see if maybe there's a message for me about it or something, but there is none. Luckily I was able to use my browser's Back function to copy and paste what I did have into notepad so that I can save it to post later if there is no problem. The only reason I could see this happening is if there is an automated detection system for certain words, since the name of the game does have 4 letters in a row than spell a certain sexually explicit activity, try to figure it out: Cubi----. It's for the GC if you need a hint, and the end rhymes with four. That's about the only reason I can see for why the thread disappeared. If it is, I'll gladly edit the name to something similar but different.

I'm quite surprised no one mentioned this game in the wishlist thread, but I wanted to start a thread about it because I'm planning on attempting to TAS it once I can correctly dump it (my current dvd drives don't support the method suggested on the Dolphin forums, and I'd rather not risk bricking my wii with mods). I'll post more once I finally manage to do so. In the meantime though, Has anyone else had the pleasure of playing this game, and if so, do you think it would be entertaining to watch a TAS of it? Considering how chaotic the game can be at times, having the speed and accuracy of a TAS run could lead to some very interesting results, especially during the levels where you're supposed to be quiet or not break anything. Edit: successfully ripped my copy, but dolphin crashes every time I try to watch a short replay of it, and I'm guessing it's due to wii games that use wiimotes, so I'll be doing GC games for now then, starting with cubivore, which I'll be making a different topic for.
