Followed this as it was being made, nice improvement!

It's been submitted, for those following this thread but not checking the workbench. http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18307

It only took 10 and a half years but it's finally been improved. :) This should obsolete the other movie, the differences aren't significant enough to warrant two categories.

I've watched your WIP, it looks fine. You'll have to redo the end of greenwood to save more gems for world 3 though. A run of the japanese version would have easier bosses and one more death warp, I don't think that's significant enough to justify a version switch.

It's about time! The critical sword is skippable but I grabbed it figuring I could manipulate it later. Didn't really work since I couldn't make sense of the RNG for the life of me. It and the medical herb are still very minor detours for something with such potential, but I guess if you can easily manipulate bigger gem drops you won't need it. You need the lucky blade. If you don't have it, the grandpa next to the passage to the underground lake will block your way and tell you to go get it. I'm not sure I'd support a version switch of such a text heavy game.

Hey I just noticed the linked youtube video is only 1:12 long when the movie is 1:46.

Hyper cubes look like they waste a lot of time. Couldn't they be avoided?

A year ago you PM'ed me about this run and I didn't think you'd really go ahead and bother making it. It's not as bad as I thought it'd be. Seeing Maxim blaze through the castle this fast is kind of neat. The boss battles are as boring as I feared though.

The GBA Castlevania games are also a good example of games that shouldn't be TAS'ed on hard mode. Everything is identical except the player does less damage, so the fights take longer. They aren't any more entertaining, they just slow down the pace of the run.

I used Final Fantasy II (U) (V1.1).smc and Snes9X v1.43+ v13. No desync and I even fast forwarded through quite a few parts.

You don't need to split it. VirtualDub can encode a specific range. Go in Video --> Select Range...

For some reason this is the only movie I've ever watched that I couldn't use fast forward without causing a desync.

Thank you Quietust, that worked beautifully. Windows is suddenly a lot less laggy too.

It appears it's explorer.exe that keeps the file handle open. Killing the process does nothing as Windows immediately restarts it and it presumably reopens another file handle on the AVI. Rebooting doesn't work. The only solution I found is using a third party app that allows files to be deleted on startup. Again, I reiterate that this only happens with AVIs downloaded from this site, which is downright bizarre.

Every time I download an AVI from this site, which is pretty rare as I usually get the emulator movie file, it is undeletable by normal means. Windows states that it is in use by another user or service, even right after a fresh boot. This happens regardless of the bittorrent client used (tested with bittornado, azureus and utorrent) or where or on what I save it on. There appears to be nothing wrong with the file attributes. This only happens with AVIs downloaded from this site, I have no such problem with any other video or file from any other site. Anyone has any idea?

You might as well use the Japanese version if that's the case. It's not like there's any story to be missed.

Nice, you finished with 0 hearts. I think this one is sufficiently good for publication despite the turboing which I don't overly care about. You optimized the early game movement, which was important. Luck manipulation also looks excellent. It's too bad you took damage, but if it saved time I'll have to live with it. Yes vote.

You're very brave to attempt this on the US version. The Japanese one is much easier because of the level ups. IIRC, you can get 2 stat points above average instead of 1 and every 10 level the average goes up. This progression is kept in the US version for all apprentices except the player, which would explain why they're so much stronger than you.

An improvement over your test run but your movement is still lacking. The most obvious mistake is how you're holding left or right while dash jumping at the beginning. This slows you down a lot.

In hard mode you do about 25% less damage. That is the only difference. It should be called "longer mode".

Presumably because the game assumes you've collected them all since it's normally the only way to reach the final boss room in castle B.

Eh, better experiment before rushing off to redo the old route minus the bolt book. Shortcuting through the clock tower A/B front door might be worth it if devil/legion can be killed really fast, for instance. This might make subweapon launching for speed less practical since the cross is 5 hearts and has a longer animation IIRC.
