It's sadly not the longest, but this April Fools style TAS of Rampage is amusing. Every time you use a continue, the game advances slightly no matter where you are, so if you just continue for 7 hours, the game beats itself with no meaningful gameplay. http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5400&highlight= If every speedrun category had a TAS, the longest TAS would be the same as the longest speedrun - Baten Kaitos 100%. https://www.reddit.com/r/speedrun/comments/3s2rk5/wr_baten_kaitos_100_in_3450312/ Because to get 100% in Baten Kaitos you have to wait for the Shampoo to evolve, which takes 2 weeks in real time, it is impossible to complete the run any faster than that. (Time losses are to menuing during the 2 weeks, getting the shampoo from the start of the run, and going from the shampoo evolving to beating the final boss) AFAIK all the real time speedruns that are theoretically longer but have never been finished single segment are so long because of huge amounts of RNG, so TASes of them would probably be faster than a Baten Kaitos 100% TAS. Another good candidate for an absurdly long TAS would be Super Mario 64 "120 stars, minimum A presses", as many A press minimizing strategies require you to perform repetitive actions for hours at a time (for speed to build up, to overflow/underflow water level, cloning over and over, etc).

Some of the timing and randomness changes are possibly suspect. It has to be deterministic for playback, but actually altering the behavior is questionable. I'll let others weigh in on this what they think.
Based on 'Such an execution is always consistent with a possible execution in the base game.' I think it's OK. (I think the idea is that it's morally equivalent to RNG manipulating each screen shake so that relevant entities don't load sooner or later, which you could eventually do by e.g. changing what system time the TAS is started on, or whatever causes the RNG initial state to change.)

Hmm, let's see. My forum account was created 2005-10-02. Back then Youtube was in its infancy, my internet was bandwidth limited and TASVideos didn't store all its videos on Youtube yet. I remember watching TASes on stuff like Webnations account, and in some cases having to download or even torrent the encode. I don't remember the exact TASes I saw around that era that inspired me to sign up, but here are some likely candidates: MM1/MM2 Gradius 1/3 (I remember re-watching Gradius 3 a lot, seeing everything blowing up was extremely satisfying) SMW/Super Demo World Marble Madness SMB1/lost levels/SMB2/SMB3 Battletoads Snake Rattle n Roll Castlevania Circle of the Moon A Boy And His Blob Tetris

Due to the difference in control scheme and possibly in other things, it may not be possible to match PC times on PSX. As long as you're optimizing as much as you can and using the best route and tricks available, it's fine.

I'm fine with deaths, but not fine with continues. Many shmup world record scoring runs use deaths on purpose to restock on resources. This is especially the case in Battle Garegga - it is nearly impossible to beat the game without dying at strategic times, due to the way the rank system works. Continuing, however, is intended by arcade developers to be the way weaker players can bypass the game's difficulty and systems and see the ending. It either resets your score to 0 or marks it as having used continues (such as by setting the lowest digit to 1), making the run tainted or incomplete. Many arcade games don't even give you a true ending if you use continues.

Unless the enemies are killed in the most entertaining way possible, the run probably will not find much interest here. Mario himself will also have to progress as quickly as possible while killing all the enemies.
Oh ok I didn't know that. My bad. I guess nevermind.
If your TAS isn't optimized enough to be published on the site proper, you can still post it on the forum topic and people will watch and enjoy it: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1337&start=1100

Those dialogs might be handy, but they sound like they're a sloppy workaround in this case. There should be no way to misclick in the first place.
IMO any destructive action should be possible to undo. That doesn't necessarily mean adding a dialogue - it might mean saving backups whenever something otherwise irreversible happens, for example. (I know it seems ironic to select 'Stop Movie without Saving' and have a save occur anyway, but the intent of 'Stop Movie without Saving' is that you don't care to preserve the movie long-term. If it saved a temporary backup, then if you made a mistake, you could go and find the temporary backup. Otherwise, you don't have to care about it.)

Unless the state as a whole is proven to be possible, we're not going to accept runs that tweak bytes specifically for some kind of advantage.
And just to be clear - the tools currently do not exist to do this, right?

Yes, it was sci-fi. Still though, it's weird to say that fantasy is ok, sci-fi is okay but having technology yet not being sci-fi is dubious. :) How do you think sci-fi gets started? It had to be modern before it was sci-fi.

So I bought FF XV, given that it was a bit on sale. I have played one hour of it so far. Since long I have been a bit dubious about the setting of the game. I mean, modern cars in a Final Fantasy game? That's nonsensical!
Remember FF8? That had cars and tanks and even freakin' spaceships.

Because of what I can see in the encode and in the submission text, I'm giving a Meh vote. But on the other hand, I must note that there looks to be no consistent difference with RTA records... http://www.speedrun.com/clocktower#SNES_Wii_VC (click on "H-Ending" tab) Edit: I've just noticed that the two 2:04 records have been added today. Looks like this run was easy to reproduce without the use of TASing tools.
If you time the speedrun.com runs the same as the TAS, the TAS is ~4.25 seconds faster. Note that there is precedent for a TAS being rejected because it is too easy to reproduce in real time: See for example http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18367 FatRatKnight's NES Overlord in 03:57.34.

Count me as among the people who'd like to see an S Ending run.
I assume the other categories aren't interesting enough to warrant separate runs?
They need to both be entertaining enough to qualify for Moons, and different enough from H Ending/S Ending to be accepted as a new category. e.g. if it's mostly the same gameplay, just that it ends slightly differently at an earlier time, that isn't enough difference.

If the credits can only be seen by beating the game normally, then this should be acceptable. I'd love to see a technical explanation of what's going on in the TAS submission notes, also.

Also, what is that variance formula? It gives a variance for a dice with 1 side equal to a quarter, when there is only 1 output value (and hence zero variance).
Ah, you're right. It should probably be (y^2 - 1)/12 instead. I'll edit the post.
