Well... I keep forgetting that the guideline even exists. I'm for removing it.
I've always supported this guideline, and as such I have in the past named playarounds in such a way for my encodes. however, I also feel that replacing 'tas' with 'superplay' is less than ideal. Perhaps both should be used in the case of a playaround. Also, I dislike that because you forget to use it, you therefore feel it must be removed...

make sure the img folder is in the lua folder (so if gens is in a folder called C:\gens, your img folder needs to be in C:\gens\lua).

Hello there. I don't like score tallys. I do, however, like your script. So I modified it so that with skip_boring_stuff and skip_s3k_score_tally (a new variable) set to true, s3k's score tallys are also skipped. I've uploaded the modified version here, though it'll only be up for a month. Just incase you want to merge or include such functionality in your own script. Changes are made line 28, lines 754-760.

That, and it's alot of hassle for just a WIP. If you're that interested, watch it on the emulator. Hell, you could even encode an AVI for us.

So I need your help! I need you to check out the video below and share it with people who you think would be interested in it, whether it's actual interest, laughing at how I'm acting in this video, or just wondering what the hell I look like.
While I can't exactly see why TASVideos needs $100, let alone $300, I will still spread this like the plague. I'm wondering if this could be posted on 4chan in an attempt to meme-erize it. Would negative comments be a problem for you?

oh, it was just an april fool's joke, i see... too bad you didn't say it before i deleted my TASes and formated my hard drive. seriously though, i thought it was serious business at first, but when raiscan started talking about his balls, i started lolling out so loud that i realized that it was a joke.
I wasn't actually aware of the "scheme" until a few hours after everything had started (and I certainly wasn't told by the administration, not directly anyway). I was kind of against the whole thing but once the point was explained I decided that the best thing to do was to indirectly persuade some people who thought it MIGHT be a joke by coming up with a bizarre way of explaining the 'problem' that wouldn't be done in a serious situation. thus my balls were primed and ready to be displayed to all. I AM BALL.

No. There is always entropy. My balls would never be black on a new console (though it's entirely possible for them to be black). They will always be a random colour, regardless of the age of the game/console.

And what about RPG games that get their initial RNG from an entropy pool? the entire outcome of the game is decided by the RNG, e.g. King's Bounty (which I might add *does* start it's RNG in entropy, so the TAS on-site is impossible to run on a console).

Can someone explain all this in english for people like me who don't really know the complications of TASing?
Absolutely! Let's consider a hypothetical game, called "Raiscan's fantabulous awesome ball". It displays a ball to the player. That's about it. In our emulators we get this. It's a nice black ball right? Quite clearly. However, on our real console when we turn on from a cold start we get this: Even more bizarrely, when we do it again we get this: What's going on? The emulator is executing the game's code 100% correctly. Where are the colours coming from? What's happening is the game is initializing a ball and getting the colour information from a source or part of the hardware that is constantly random. An entropy, if you will. It's possible it's reading such information entirely from uninitialized RAM which may have left over residue information from a previously played game. This is how Banjo Kazooie's Stop 'N' Swop was going to work. How far does this stretch? Almost every game, and it causes the entirety of our work to be invalid under our single premise of theoretically working on real hardware.

And it sucks if this is the end of the site, I come here for the speed and precision, not necessarily the absolute authenticity in the emulation.
I'll be making a clone of the site shortly and hosting it myself. Any name ideas?

Oh, I see. So we're voting no because you think this run doesn't follow the same ideals as Guano did when he made his? Philosophical rejection!

I'm not saying that we shouldn't aim for perfection with out movies. All I'm saying is that it should be more of an iterative process. Currently as it stands here we have an improvement. It's not perfect, and the runner has no intention of improving it, but it's still better than what we have. I don't understand why this is a problem. I agree with you completely that the ultimate goal is to have a polished run, but this shouldn't be a Start-->finish with no steps in between. TASing can and should be a gradual process aiming towards perfection.

if you care, I want this run not to be publish not because of the language, but because of the low level of optimizing.
So this is what TASvideos is becoming: an obsession with optimization to the point we have no iterative improvement? Here, I thought it was all about godly reflexes and entertaining our viewers. Oh wait, it is:

Using these tools, we overcome human limitations to complete games with extremely high precision, entertaining our viewers as our players tear through games at seemingly impossible speeds. The end result of this process is simply a series of key-presses which could theoretically be performed on the original hardware.
No wait, that can't be true either, because we have an Ocarina of Time run that is 7 minutes slower than an unassisted run. Sometimes I wish that were a joke, but it really isn't. So, let's see; what does this run provide that our current one does not?
  1. A run faster than the current world record for unassisted runs
  2. Less boring parts (fewer cutscenes, less backwards walking)
  3. A more accurate demonstration of what a TAS is.
  4. More wtf glitches
  5. Many more improvements outlined earlier in the thread
So why are we voting no again?

Swordless, Grunz you care to publish on a site that is not a dictatorship in the future? ;D That's sounding better and better by the minute, Slowi. :)
So wait, I'm confused. Are you bitching because people higher up are voting to publish this run and as such disagreeing with you? Or are you bitching because you wanted to take all the glory for making a new run that obsoletes an old run by a sizable amount, and someone has beaten you to it? I can't see why a run made on the Japanese ROM would be any concern to you, because you should know that any improvements due to language changes are not considered to be improvements by the judges. So even if you submitted a run after this with certain sections slower due to more text you wouldn't be penalized for it. Also, apparently there's a quicker route which I assume you are using, so this run doesn't even pose a threat to a run you're supposedly working on. So that just leaves the first two options..

Hey guys, was just wondering if anyone here has experience converting game music formats into something generic. I'll be more specific: I'm looking for a way to convert NSF and SPC files into a format playable in FMOD. For example, NSF --> MIDI would be okay, but I'm hoping there's a way to retain as much of the original's information as possible. As such I'm wondering if it's possible to convert to a tracker format such as MOD, IT or S3M. Is there a program that can do this, or would it have to be done manually? Why I'd like to use a tracker format:
  • Loop points (which are very much needed)
  • Smaller filesize
  • Compatibility with the system I'm working with
I'd greatly appreciate any help/suggestions.[/list]

I was under the impression that lossless h264 had some problems under Quicktime on Mac OSX. Also, runs don't need to use lossless h264. just high settings on x264. It doesn't need to be lossless to LOOK lossless.

The cheap SSDs are sometimes slower than hard drives or suffer from performance degradation and/or lower lifetimes.
This is one of the big letdowns of my EeePC 1000. It has two solid state drives; an 8gb and a 32gb. The 8gb is pretty good performance; possibly slightly better than a traditional hard drive, however the 32gb SSD is terrible. While the burst read speed is pretty good still, the sustained read/write speed is awful, and this is really noticable when loading an operating system off of it. So yeah, stay clear of cheap SSDs because you might end up with something that's only really useful for lower power consumption (and possibly not even that). Of course, these aren't likely to be problems for PCs... Also, you might consider looking at Samsung's Spinpoint F3. I bought one recently and it's pretty impressive. While platters will never be as fast as SSD overall, it's still fast enough for all my needs.

I'm not going to say whether this is a good game or not. That isn't in question. The question is: did I enjoy this run? I found it pretty interesting. I liked the labarynth zone glitch and the general play-through speed of this run (though I am sure it's optimized). As such, I'm giving it a yes vote. Sometimes I feel people are too concerned about the game itself rather than the run. Just because they don't find it interesting doesn't mean others won't.

While I agree that King's Bounty is pretty much the pinnacle of Luck Manipulation on the site and can certainly be impressive to watch for some, it almost requires having played the game before or someone next to you explaining what the hell just happened. For that reason I do not consider it a good pick for a newcomer to watch (I can't even properly remember what the current star definition is, but I believe that "newcomer-friendly" was still there at least somewhere).
Why would a newcomer watch a movie of a game they've never played (or even heard of) before?
