Have you tried Windows 7 Johannes? It sounds like you've taken one look at biased information on blogs and taken it in as your own. Yes, Windows 7 has the capability to play media with DRM. No, it doesn't suddenly lock down all your files and ensure you can never play them again on another PC. If you're ripping from a CD using WMP, you can disable the production of DRM rips, and instead use traditional MP3s. If you aren't using WMP to rip a CD, then you won't have a problem anyway. As for "nothing new except UI polishments and eye candy", I think you'll find a lot has been added. New network stack, new audio engine. DirectX 10 & 11. A whole plethora of built-in drivers. If you want to trim it down, the image file can be cut up further with vLite. With the price of hard drive space these days though, I wonder why you'd be annoyed about such a thing..

Win7 is practically Vista SP3, and it's still basically XP with higher hardware requirements, a polished UI, more eye candy and more restrictions. And XP's excellent sound recording feature, "Stereo Mix", is still absent.
XP (2001):
  • 300MHz Processor
  • 128MB RAM
  • 1.5GB HDD space
  • 800x600 Capable Graphics Card
7 (2009):
  • 1GHz Processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB HDD Space (though can be installed in just 4GB)
  • 800x600 Capable Graphics Card (Dx9 /w 128MB VGA memory for Aero)
So all in all, 8 years later and suprisingly the requirements have gone up. Shocker. Also, I challenge you to find a new computer in a major store that's less than those specs these days. Hell, my netbook runs it better than XP! Also, what are these "restrictions"? And as for Stereo Mix; sorry, but you're flat out wrong. It's still in for both Vista and 7:

I've been trying to search for a post on how Bisqwit did it, but for some reason I couldn't find it. Basically, you make some arbritrary bash script that reads every media file and greps for some of the common fourccs. if it isn't there, the site posts 'unknown'. ...Though since media files can be quite large, it is likely the script only searched the header of a file.

For the mkv and mp4, I am getting excessively jerky movements made. This occurs most prominently in the level starting around 1:30. UraniumAnchor also seems to be having a couple of problems with it streaking everywhere. Aktan, can you take a look and see if you can see the same problems?

Sounds like an award acceptance speech. Yo Flygon, I'm really happy for you, and imma let you finish, but DeHackEd has some of the best encodes of all time. Some of the best encodes of all time!

Might I suggest a name for this program? Hourglass. (Since hourglasses are associated with time and this doesn't actually emulate anything as far as I can tell, instead working as a wrapper for the game)

I personally agree with you on the -2, one of the folks on the IRC channel thought -2 sounded okay, but evidently, I am not the only person that thought he was wrong.
Personally I have used anywhere from -0.8 to -1.3 For most runs I've encoded. While I do suggest you experiment, going to the extreme of -2 does (unfortunately) have very noticable effects in alot of games. As for the run, yes vote from me.

How so? Because the samples were cut from the original arbitrarily? Nobody said anything about there being frame boundaries on these samples.
Because the brass note is missing in 1.43, the whole sound gets played earlier and ends earlier. I'm assuming that the 143 and 151 are at an identical time index, meaning 143 starts slightly earlier and ends sooner, where 151 starts slightly later and ends a bit later. I'm not sure what OmnipotentEntity's wave difference shows, since it looks like in that picture the waveforms have been aligned (which is not the case in reality). This would be a more accurate overlay:

The only discernable difference I'm hearing between those two samples is an extra brass note on the 1.51 recording. But I'm also without my old sound system, currently restricted to laptop + headphones. Take that as you will.
The lack of the extra brass note also seems to effect the timing:

The better way to do this is to stop supporting 1.43 with upgrades and let people change to it as they see a need. Benefits to doing it this way
  • Gocha no longer has to work with an old, messy, codebase.
  • People aren't forced to stop using the version they prefer.
  • Nobody is making unilateral policy decisions for the entire site,
  • People have a chance to try snes9x 1.51 again to make sure all the kinks are really gone before they use it.
This is an excellent idea, but I'd also like to suggest that people are informed why 1.51 is better than 1.43. Specifically, people did not use 1.51 sooner due to new bugs and problems. Do you know what these problems were, and more importantly, have they been addressed? Information encouraging users to change should be the goal, rather than forcing hand.

This is a 887 frames (14:37) improvement to previous run. Truncated's trick saved 13:06 in 2nd level, in 3rd level I had better luck with flames and saved 1:27. I gained 2 frames in 4th level and 2 frames in 5th level.
I'm assuming you mean seconds and milliseconds, not minutes and seconds. This should be written as 14.37 not 14:37. I got so confused reading this.

So now that this has been accepted, the question is simple; what exactly does this run have as a category? No level skips?

With one core, carrying on from previous encodes. As you can see the bitrate is also lower.

I can upload the mp4 if required. I'd also like to express my concerns with the rules; the option --no-psy should be banned as it's a feature that trades off visual quality for SSIM points. --no-psy is also part of the psnr and ssim tweaks so those would have to be banned also. Oh also: this could probably be beaten by changing threads to 1. Have fun with waiting an hour for 25 seconds of movie though :)
