^Kids gotta learn the meaning of "mediocre" because apparently Amurrikan public schools don't do it well enough. I wonder what would happen if he submitted a crappy freeplay video to SDA, do you think they care about self-esteem?

pretty sure from most of the comments you guys didnt even watch the video the least you can do it watch this super high quality encode(tm)
That encode was terrible, and at least one of us did go to the trouble of setting up the weird plugins the submitter used. Also, "freerunnish" means "not suitable for publication"...
The movie must be complete Your movie should begin from the console power-on and end when the last decisive action has been delivered. There are no specific rules for an exact endpoint but it must adhere to the following rules: It must beat the game. It must be able to reach the credits or end screen without the viewer needing to do anything.
http://tasvideos.org/Rules.html (if you violate these your run will be rejected) Also, when you can't seem to keep the Lakitu from stopping you early in the game, while that has been done in submissions here for the past couple years, that's a major red flag...
Be accurate. Be accurate in everything.
http://tasvideos.org/Guidelines.html (if you violate these your run will have trouble being accepted)

YouTube has officially invaded TASVideos. I predict shitty fan-runs of the latest OMG SO HARD hack of Super Mario World to show up next. If I had mod powers I would temp-ban the submitter and tell him to read what TASVideos is all about, with links to relevant parts of the forum and possibly a quiz over IRC if he wanted to get back in early. Still ya gotta give him credit, he's interested in a game that came out before he was born...can't say the same for myself (born in late 1984 so Flicky and Donkey Kong are probably the only close-to-interesting games IMO that came out before I was born).

We also need extra software to view or make input files, or even to watch the new MKVs, and tbqh 7zip is more ubiquitous than that. Also self-extracting archives are a bad idea, both because of the extra size and because lots of people are leery of downloading random .exe files...and because these archives would not open so easily in Linux.

The point is still the same: I mean it's hard enough to port the current dependencies, and the site will need to be in new hands soon, so it's best to keep the difficulties to a minimum. I guess the other idea that I had was that this might be like the move from avi to mkv for publications, from the old and familiar to a better format. Also, to go along with Bisqwit's facetious suggestion, it would be easier to just do LZMA compression without putting the movie file in a TAR because per the guidelines only one file can be in the archive anyway, so we don't need to package several files together (which is the sole purpose of TAR).

7zip provides superior compression, allowing longer runs to be submitted, and free and open-source 7zip compressors and decompressors are available for all platforms. Is it just too much work to reconfigure NESVideoAgent to unpack .7z files in order to calculate the movie length and possibly produce screenshots from local versions of the ROMs, like it does now with submitted .zip files?

Not much for me to add that hasn't already been said, but let me say that the Forbidden Box-dancing Darksol was hilarious. Yes vote for sure, and I'd recommend it be encoded with the map script running to help reduce confusion.
I'm trying my hand at it. Okay, I don't know how to make the AVI show exactly the emulator output, even with h.264 selected under ffdshow (I was following adelikat's method); I was able to get the map on the encode, but it's too smoothed-out to be readable, especially the blue text on a black background; that color could be changed to yellow or white for contrast, but someone more knowledgeable should encode this, because there's no way I'm submitting a crappy 800MB AVI even as a test encode (I mean I could use mencoder for a couple passes to reduce the size, but it would still look crappy). I will go ahead and show part of it, though, the first 30 seconds of Labyrinth time: http://www.mediafire.com/file/ziz2drhm2oo/SITD.avi I must say that changing the blue text to yellow makes it much clearer.

1. Use the AVI recording feature of your emulator: http://tasvideos.org/EmulatorResources/MakingAVI.html 2. Use Anri-chan to get it down to size: http://speeddemosarchive.com/kb/index.php/Anri-chan I know it was developed for SDA to easily reduce the size of DVD-Video captures, but it works here too. 3. This site is mostly about optimized full-game tool-assisted speedruns or works-in-progress thereof, not about the kind of crap that clogs YouTube and ruins the good name of the TAS.

Overpopulation is a myth. It does not exist. It's true that some places and cities are overpopulated, but there are other places to live in. There is no overpopulation, there are just people who choose to live in overpopulated places.
I heard that for everyone on Earth to live like the average American, we would need the resources of 5 Earths; it's not finding enough space to pack everyone in, it's finding enough food, water, minerals, and other things that support a lower-middle-class lifestyle. I also agree with nfq on religion, like I find some of the intricacies fascinating even though I am an atheist with a hard time believing that anything supernatural exists.

This game looks like a Chinese pirate "Mega Man X for Game Boy Color" hack. I still enjoyed it.

far from the truth IRL, it is possible to live a healthy life without animal products, although some nutrients, like iron and B12, will be harder to come by. IMO when I finally make a lot of money, I will work up the courage to go vegan.

Go to the post linked from the description, save that script as map.lua, and load that in along with the input file when playing back the movie, to see what it looks like. It's a small map of the labyrinth that appears on the left side whenever the player is in a labyrinth, along with an HP counter that appears during a boss fight; it does not detract from the movie because it appears in that large black border on the left.

It's too sad that most hosts won't let you install eAccelerator, because it sounds like an excellent way to make a PHP site fast.

Also afaik, you dont need virtual drives with SSF... it does read real physical cd drive too (like yabause...)
I should have been clearer: To use a Bin/Cue or ISO/Cue setup, as opposed to ever having owned the game, you need to use a virtual drive with SSF but usually not with Yabause.

I heard that the Saturn version has more enemies per level and a couple Robot Masters that didn't appear in the PSX version, so now that we have Yabause-rr maybe this version should be focused on. re: http://tasvideos.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8024&start=40

It's possible that Islam is going to be pretty big in the future. I once read that Islam and Christianity might unite into one single religion: Chrislam. According to Muslims, they have the same God as Christians. I think the Quran also predicts that Islam will become the biggest religion in the future. It's going to be wonderful. All religions will unite into One World Religion. Finally, all the barriers of religion and countries will disappear, and there will be no war anymore.
The biggest delusion of them all. So many people will be deceived. Allah has no son.
Yes, but it is still the same god (even Christians and Jews in the Arab world who primarily speak Arabic refer to their god as "Allah"); Christians are the only ones who believe that Yeshua was the son of God, while Muslims regard him ("Isa" in Arabic) as not God's son but still the fourth of the five most important prophets: Nuh (Noach, Noah), Ibrahim (Avraham, Abraham), Musa (Moshe, Moses), Isa (Yeshua, Jesus), and Muhammad. Also Chrislam is just a tiny sect centered in Lagos, not a future synthesis of the two most widespread religions; I'm sure the vast theological differences will keep Christianity and Islam from converging, and if anything the trend has been toward increasing doctrinal division within religious organizations (even though political and social unity among them may increase). Finally (once again, directed more at nfq than at Bisqwit), Islam is pretty big now, although not in the Western world (then again in the UK and probably other European nations there are now more Muslims than Jews, unlike the US); India, Russia, and China have huge numbers of Muslims, for example, and about 1/5 of the global population identifies as Muslim, although given where most of them live, their global influence is still disproportionately low.

I thought that using a virtual drive was only necessary for SSF...and I was kinda annoyed when I needed to install Daemon Tools Lite instead of using Microsoft's Virtual CD-ROM Control Tool.

As far as I can tell it isn't, in fact, this movie syncs on the (E) rom so I assume they are exactly the same. I chose the J rom under the general attitude here that if there is no U rom use the J rom, E roms suck. Obviously this is targeted at home console emulators, but for the sake of cleanliness I chose to also apply that reasoning here.
Why did you cancel it? Also, I had thought that the attitude is to use a ROM that is more likely to have English text, so the preference order would go like U-E-A-J-K or so (A for Australian, K for Korean); then again I remembered that at least for the home consoles (not handhelds like GB) U and J were both NTSC while E was PAL, so E actually is more different from U than J is. Of course if it turns out that there actually is some major glitch in the E rom but not the J rom (unlikely because J came first and usually bugs are ironed out instead of added over time), that may be why you cancelled the run.

It's a shame, but it's true; the new IE8, Chrome 2, and today's Safari 4 release do not support APNG, only Firefox 3 or later and Opera 9.5 or later do.
