I've been mulling this over in my head. I don't want to come to TASvideos some day a few years from now and have pages of only 2 minute save corruption runs demonstrating nothing from the game. Unlike some people I think entertainment is secondary to speed (thus my easy yes vote here), but the aforementioned scenario sounds depressing. I think a "uses save corruption" category could be very useful in alleviating that future and should maybe be considered. I am also very curious if this mid-frame reset could ever be accomplished on a real console, even just once. We wouldn't support an emulator only construct would we?

More importantly the currently published movie has been proven invalid! It relied on the fact that saving takes 2 frames, and so reset can happen after one frame and corrupt memory. But it only takes 2 frames because snes9x is inaccurate in its emulation, it should only take 1, thus sub-frame reset would be required to corrupt ram.
Reeaaaallly, thanks for pointing that out. Very interesting.

Timing for this kind of thing is even trickier than replicating a standard TAS on real hardware, because you have to send the reset command at a very specific time between instructions. The SNES's CPU runs at about 21MHz; if we assume it takes 16 clock cycles to run one instruction (almost certainly a gross exaggeration), and that the reset command can arrive at any point during a specific command to result in the desired corruption (probably not true) then that means that the reset command would have to arrive in a window of time only 16 / 21000000 = 761 nanoseconds in size. In short, don't expect to see this run verified on the console.
Thanks for the explanation. Aside from verifying the run, can the very concept of mid-frame resets be verified?

Regarding the run itself, I have to say this didn't look very different at all from the run inichi made back then. I think it's entirely reasonable to list him as a coauthor; he deserves credit for figuring out the strategy even if none of his input survives in the finished version.
+1. If this very concept and exact route is from someone else, I think that person is fairly a coauthor.

headexplode.jpg that was amazing! Yes vote...assuming these mid-frame resets would be possible on a real machine. If its an emulator only construct that I don't think its cool. Regarding the comments of it being boring...well, it is. But its the fastest run, and I don't see how it doesn't obsolete the others, without creating as suggested a new category for save corruption based runs. My 2 cents.

So, I will be able to save about 2400 to 2800 frames(400 * 6or7) if I use the glitch this way. But there may be many problems that you have mentioned. Also, killing more enemy will take much time. I won't be sure until someone tries both strategy.
I still really doubt that it would be worth the time to forge/level the whip.

New standard encodes, from the latest improvement, are now available! Stream Download - Alternate link (132 MB)
Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmCHViCZ_h0 Scoured this thread for a Youtube link and could not find one. If I read your earlier comments correctly Mister Epic then posting your encode to Youtube is OK. Posted as Unlisted for others like me looking to watch the submission, will remove if anyone has a problem with that. Yes vote from me. Entertaining, very different from N64 run and some great glitches.

I voted yes after watching, but before I realized its not actually "real time" faster than the current published run. My 2 cents is that if there was only going to be one published run, it should be the real time run. I think that's clearly the main goal. But there are already plenty of games with multiple publications of different interesting conditions (newgame+, 100% runs, etc.). Given that fact, the question then becomes whether for Super Metroid a "lowest in-game time" publication is interesting. That's obviously subjective, but I think it is.

Quick question: Why talking to the rebel girl in the south town of the Empire if you're going to walk past the guard behind the trees anyway? Or is taking to her a switch to activate?
Oops forgot to mention, I asked myself the same question, I'm pretty sure that part can be skipped...

TAS of the year!
+1 I waited to vote Yes until I watched it, but I've been following the WIP and knew this would be fantastic. Secret of Mana is my favorite game of all time and you did a fantastic job Touch-me, thank you for your run! I also wasn't aware you got the time even lower!!! I actually really like the running commentary, Japanese boss names, HP values, etc. Not sure if the final video would have it but I think more TASes should do that type of thing. Your English is great Touch-me, infinitely better than my Japanese :). Any one of us could give the commentary a once over to polish it up.

Gone but not forgotten my friend! Not only have I always viewed these runs as each building off the previous, but yours broke new ground and melted my eyes when I first saw it.

So wait, this is faster than the currently published MMX3 100% TAS and completes MMX and MMX2 at 100%? What?!?
My mind! These multigame runs are always awesome but this one was fantastic. Great job agwawaf!

To add on to this, if we could use the Virtual Console version of the game, I think it would be sub 5 minutes, due to the faster loading times.
Emulating an emulator? My mind!

Hell yes vote! Great new route, entertaining as always. I can't believe this game has been improved yet again. I've enjoyed watching Mario 64 get improved over and over again probably more than any other game on here.

OK watching the gradius run on a real NES brought me an inappropriate amount of happiness. I support the creation of the console verified checkmark, great addition. Thanks again micro500 for all your work on this project. Our community continues to amaze me.

Wow, that's pretty high. Back when I worked as a web designer the highest we saw (for Adwords) was around 20%. I guess for a more tech oriented site you'll have a higher portion of users using ad blockers. The real shame is that most people using ad blockers want to avoid the real invasive and annoying advertising, but by blocking out all advertising they also block the non intrusive advertising of websites who depend on advertising revenue. I think as adblocking tools get more easy to use the networks (YPN, etc.) will have to work around it. Just having one external linked file, wile efficient in other ways, makes it far too easy to block for example.

I am sure they had an index of many pages - but every subpage? Maybe not. Even if they had it completely crawled, they may not have been analyzed for contextual advertising yet. That may be a two step process - step one, crawl and index the page; step two analyze for contextual ads - who knows? I was just being optimistic about it. Better targeted ads = more clicks. Furthermore, YPN is currently in private beta. It's not as widely available as adsense. That probably means there are lest advertiser, which means that Yahoo would be less able to deliver a properly targeted ad. Overall, I think that Yahoo targeting will probably improve overtime. My 2 cents.

My first perception is that those are much worse targeted than Google ads. Yahoo offers mortgage and credit advertisements every once in a while (I get enough spam of those, thank you), adsense didn't do those.
Yea, I told you they weren't as well targeted. Here's hoping that: A. The initial bad targeting was due to pages not being crawled yet. B. If that isn't true, Yahoo continues to improve the service.
