Still a dumb rule. WIPs are WIPS for a reason, generally the runner hits a wall or a desync which is why they didn't carry on their run.
Otherwise anything could get accepted just because an author was unlucky.
Beating the existing complete record is not 'anything could get accepted!" Far from it. Not finishing a WIP is also not 'unlucky'. EZ's had plenty of time to work on his WIP, hence the discussion between the two of them over priority. This is what happens when WIPs don't get finished and another runner wants to take a crack at it. If it's supposedly 'easy' to beat, well, EZ should make it so. He's beaten HOTD, should be publishable unless EZ wants to finish his run.

Wow. Real tour de force. I actually wouldn't mind a run that unlocks both of the bonus levels and then beats them. Some might consider that 'tedious', but what are we here for if not to watch absurdly precise video games? In any case, I don't think that discussion should detract from the merits of this excellent submission. Thank you for all the hard work you all put into this!

if this was any other game other than SMB3 (like if it was a shovelware NES title that had this glitch), would you still be saying this?
Yep. One of my favorite TASes is the Kings Bounty one. :)

Great achievement. I want to give a shoutout to Masterjun's and ais523's triumph here. If I had put in the work that they had done and achieved this stunning result I would be rather annoyed by the whole debate around it. Should be in moons, IMO. forget about the whole Vault.

Ultimately, I think this site is primarily about entertainment. Making your movie less good but faster is counterproductive. If it were something that was known to be faster but you weren't quite sure how to implement it, that would be one thing. I generally feel that way about scoreboards in general. There are games where it's faster to finish second because of victory animations, etc. I'd go so far to say that Victory animations shouldn't count against the player in terms of assessing the speed of their submission, only the actual time that they can control. This would do away with a lot of the nonsense, where you are slower and less accurate, over an optimal submission in terms of performance.

Run was ok. Game choice was not. No from me.

Watched it. Have to say the loops is a meh for me. I don't think that removing them particularly constitutes an advantage on the SRAM, given that you're not powering yourself up more. With the loops you're still under 10 minutes so I don't think that it's a great justification to not include the key acquisition. If it were substantially longer, then yeah, that's a different conversation, but I don't think that is the case here. The Mokujin spawn is the biggest issue I have with this movie. There is a more optimal spawn than the one available, so this movie is improvable, and relatively easily so. I don't think the optimality of this movie is sufficiently bad to warrant a no from me. So meh.

First off, great movie. Is the game breaker necessary? Secondly, with the failed 2pt attempts, is it all because of the inability to get a good frame for that attempt and the next play?

My no vote would be a yes if this were an actually published game and not just a lame hack.

Small improvement is 16 frames and the 99 ups in one autoscroller? Take my yes vote!

Finally done watching this. Yeah. Great TAS, not so great a game to run. Thanks for the patience in doing this game. There's a lot of games out there where the cinematics run > 50 percent of the content (and some of the best games here). Don't see any reason to hold that against you.

1 to 5 would seem the appropriate order, given as the game presents them in that order.

Ok. Finally watched this. Why does only one player go at the boss when both could attack him? I see what you've done with the life management to reduce boss health, but it seems to me that both players could team up. At times there are periods where there's nothing going on, or player 2, usually donatello isn't moving. This is good, but I can see what was being said about this not really feeling like a superplay. I don't get the feel of 'style' with this. Does it really belong in Moons?

On two holes I purposefully land in a Water Hazard instead of onto the fairway because it begins the next stroke more quickly.
Yeah. No. Just looks sloppy. Lowest score would be a better goal, even if it sacrifices some time.

Please reread this question until you understand why it answers itself.
For me the content is the dungeons and the bosses. I'm curious what others think.

Personally, 100 percent for me would involve all dungeons, all bosses. Lots of other games here use this standard. The purpose of 100 percent is to show off more of the game. When games get broken, we lose parts of the content. Is getting all the items really part of the content of this game?

It'd be hard to discuss the fundamental principles behind TAS rules without being aware of those pages.
Feos, yeah. Thanks for the reference. I've read it. As was posted there are quite a number of exceptions, publications that were accepted even with known improvements.

there are many reasons why they could be abandoned, one could be the author isnt working on it due to being demotivated, or if they are still working on it but havent posted updates recently, TASing should not be a quick and easy thing to do. they are projects that can take a long time to properly do. anyone who has actually done a tas before will tell you that it's not as easy as doing a speedrun.
This is a good reason to scrap this rule. Why should good submissions be held up by motivational issues on behalf of someone submitting a WIP? It's not like the publication cannot further be improved. It's not set in stone. How it tends to work is that improvements are incremental. Small improvements beget further improvements. Knowing that your movie could be improved and then losing motivation is a bad outcome. We'd be far better off with a published improvement to an existing movie than waiting around for an abandoned WIP to get finished off. I know I would be pretty demotivated if I spent time working on a TAS and then had it rejected even though I beat out the currently published run. Especially if I started it before the WIP improvements were published. I'd be like, "why bother"?
probably because some people choose to work on tases on their own, and splicing the inputs may not always work if the game isnt hex friendly. It's also imo very shitty to take someone's inputs without first asking for permission from the original author first. The author of the WIP not being active is a whole different story.
That the author of the WIP is inactive makes this pretty open and shut. This should be published as an improvement to the current publication.
