I am a big fan of this game, but I haven't played it for over ten years. My guess is that yes, the fastest way is to chain bosses to death. If my guess is right, that would mean that the TAS wouldn't show off the game very well. Which would be sad. It would be cool if this TAS proves me wrong. It's really a great game though.

I think a TAS of this game would have value, seeing as how it is the original and complete version of a renowned classic arcade game. Unfortunately a TAS wouldn't be able to show off somebody getting into the highest possible levels.

I thought it would have something to do with UPX when I saw the thread title.

Cinema would look very nice at a high resolution. And, the rest of your ideas sound good, too. I say, go for it!

My impression was that this new thing isn't the same as voxels. Could be wrong.

Voted yes... because Dracula sucks... and this run blows... my MIND! This TAS looks and feels good. And for some reason, this game seems just so right for TASing.

I wonder what the next big Super Metroid hack is going to be like. Congratulations to Hoandjzj. Your run is so awesome, I had to post in this thread twice.

Awesome! I remember stumbling on to this game years ago. It seemed too tedious to actually play. However, the TAS doesn't seem too tedious to watch. Thanks for sharing this with us!

It's just that I couldn't figure out how you started on the second quest. Apparently the button presses begin after a savestate is loaded, but I wasn't clear on that point at first because when you open up the movie from the menu it says that it is "Recorded From: Soft-Reset". So that's what confused me. I got the main point you were making, though, and it was a fascinating main point. So thanks for making it.

Hi, Bezman. The girl's name is Elmyra and she loves those cute furry creatures so much that she wants to hug them and squeeze them to death. Don't ask me why. Also, I agree with you, this is one of the most densly entertaining runs on the site.

I must sound really dumb when I ask this, but how can you tell it is recorded from a savestate? When the movie starts, it says it is playing it back from a soft reset. I actually looked around to see if there is a legitimate way to start the game in phase two, with beetles instead of goombas. So all that encoded stuff at the beginning of the FM2 file is the savestate?

I voted yes because this is obviously an epic game that looks like it is perfect for TASing, and the TAS itself is obviously very high quality. I found the entire run to be entertaining.

I totally agree. This hack really lends itself to the potential for interesting TASes. Over the months since it has first been released, people have been discovering more and more cool stuff about it. It has been at version 2.0 for awhile now. The severe difficulty of getting 100% in this hack makes things even more interesting.

Wow, the person who wrote the description for this game really trashes it. I don't know about other people, but I remember having lots of fun when I played the Lost Levels for the first time.

Instead of cubes, how about rhombic dodecahedrons?

The map is huge. It is about the same size as Redesign's map. It's a blend of the Zero Mission, Super Metroid, and original Metroid general map layouts. There are a few rooms that are similar to rooms from those three games, but for the most part they are completely original. The two main added abilities are mid-air somersault initiation and shinespark cancel/recharging just like Redesign has. Besides all the extra items that wouldn't need to be collected for a TAS, there are a few other bonuses that can be obtained by doing optional things or doing things an alternate way. To me, there seem to be fewer possible ability acquisition orders that the player can choose from compared to Super Metroid. It's a very polished hack, and apparently the author is still releasing new versions of it on a frequent basis. It might be awhile before we see a submission for this.

This was thrilling to watch. Almost brought tears to my eyes, but that is likely due to how amazing Einhänder is. It's not the kind of game that is traditionally good for a TAS publication, but I think that it is still worthy, and I would like to humbly offer three reasons. Einhänder is naturally entertaining to watch. There is a lot of potential for a TAS of this game to be even more entertaining than this one, but at the very least this TAS is sure to be impressive to both anyone who is familiar with Einhänder and anyone who watches TASes to see a flashy game completed as fast as possible. Each weapon and method of defeating enemies is demonstrated. Those who have only played Einhänder casually will appreciate this, and those who haven't played it at all will get to see a shooter with what is likely a wider variety of weapons than they have seen before. It's more likely than other "unoptimized for entertainment" TASes to inspire somebody to try to make a TAS that obsoletes it. This is a stretch, but worth considering. Games from the shooting genre seem to appeal to TASers. One of the first TASes ever was a demonstration of what can be done with the game Gradius, which is obviously a fairly primitive specimen of the genre. The paradox is that shooters are games that aren't really ideal for TAS publications, mostly because the pace of the progress through each level is limited, causing the playthrough to seem like it isn't as hasty as can it be. Yet shooters offer gameplay that offers the opportunity for TASers to show off their understanding of it in an intriguing way. For Einhänder, even more so. It's certainly a deep game, maybe it's one of the deepest shooters ever. It offers an opportunity for a TASer to create a submission that is limited only by their imagination. If this submission is published, I think that most people who will watch the video will be pleased that the publication was there for them to select. It would be an intriguing display that has a positive influence on the prestige of TAS videos. Sparky, the skill and insight you have displayed in this submission does not go unappreciated by me.

This is stunning. My jaw was dropped the entire time. It is superplay nirvana. This game stimulated so much imagination in the late 1980s, and now many years later this TAS is a magical kinetic masterwork. This is a monumental TAS. There is talk of giving this TAS a star. It sure is worthy of a star! Maybe a star isn't enough! A magic subspace potion perhaps?
