A few questions: Are TASs created from SRAM allowed on this site? TT makes a more entertaining run in my opinion. Is there or will there ever be functionality to do so on Mupen? Are soft resets such as the one from okaygo's modification allowed? Are codes allowed? A few that come to mind are maximum upgrades or all balloons are blue.

I made a movie of getting 999 in the skate challenge thanks to noitisnot's idea. Video.

so im curious if the author or someone else will be improving this or is it too much work and what are the estimates for how much time can be saved, say, 6-8 minutes maybe?
I might do another run if there was a way to start with TT because he is much faster and makes a more entertaining run. I think that 4-5 minutes would be saved if banjo was used once more unless some new strats were found.

The only complaint I have is that you didn't mess with the computer nearly as much as I'd hoped. There were several times that you were lapping, armed with 10 rockets, and didn't do anything. that really pissed me off kinda. I would have loved it if you shot one into each person in cases like that. As well, IIRC you didn't use any oil slicks that you got, when you could guarantee it makes contact easily.
It's not as simple as firing a rocket on the right frame. In order to do stuff like that you need subframe precision and being in a position to do that usually loses time. I used oil slicks 3 or so times to hurt the computers IIRC. You never see the slicks hit the computers so there is not much point in my eyes.

About Drumstick, couldn't you easily unlock him in one of the Genie's challenges? On a close tangent, couldn't the hovercraft challenge be faster by instead of going under the arch of the ramp in the begining, to go around to the right?
Drumstick can only be unlocked after you finish the Dragon area and at that time all the challenges are complete. As I've already said, unlocking Drumstick takes 20 seconds so it is difficult to determine whether using him is a good idea. I'm not sure about the hover idea. Remember that if you stray too far from the course the challenge ends.

well documented drumstick is better in all three categories see: gamefaqs
The sources contradict each other and none that I found said that Drumstick is better in all categories. I tested them myself to come to the conclusion. If you really don't believe me I could upload video proof to show this.

Using TT is also a distinct possibilty as well, it only takes about half an hour to obtain him.
Unless it is a 100% run, no.

According to a brief calculation, unlocking Drumstick is roughly a 20 second diversion maybe less. In the nine tracks remaining you would be looking to save 2 seconds over Banjo. Banjo and Drumstick have equal acceleration but Drumstick wins out in top speed but loses in turning capabilities. It is therefore difficult to say which decision is better. I am sure that whichever driver is better is only better by a thin margin.

I finally beat Fried's Ancient Lake time. It was a very strong time so it wasn't easy. I think it could be improved by a few frames but it's about as good as DKR gets. The splits were 14.66 13.23 13.20 / 44.10 Low quality video.

From what a pro told me getting a green boost while using a hover craft or plane is a bad idea, stick with the purple one, except when using the ground based zipper
The colour of the boost is irrelevant. It is whether you are holding A that makes the difference.
AKA wrote:
There seemed to be a lot of unneccessary bumping which didn't seem deliberate and was avoidable
Maybe. But the instances in this movie, no time or a negligible amount was lost due to bumping so I wasn't particularly concerned about it.
AKA wrote:
For hover boosting while using a balloon , wouldn't it be better to hop before using a boost
In some instances, yes but in others, it makes no difference.
AKA wrote:
The plane spin that helps Banjo go faster seemed to not be exploited enough while in some areas while it seemed to be used in areas where it not necessary, also there where places where Banjo bashed into the ground perhaps the spin could have helped to avoid such situations
If you let go of A, start spinning and hold A again your speed goes down to 30 and slowly rises. Perhaps you were referring to instances where I was excessively spinning in order that my speed would not drop like that.

also why banjo? why not a faster racer?
Banjo is only second in speed to Krunch. However, Krunch has ridiculously bad handling and acceleration that would lose much time. There were instances in this movie where Banjo's handling wasn't good enough so I don't see how Krunch could make it.

i have one question for the guy who did the movie: any dkr vet knows that pressing "a" early terminates the green boost from a zipper early, what is the amount of time specifically before you can hit "a" after hitting a zipper to maximize the boost?
This is only relevent to the hovercraft. It seems the boosts in this game are often based on luck. The starting boost for instance varies in speed from boosting you to 60 to 90 even though you press A at the same time on a different track.

I left my no vote as well, I am gonna have to agree with AKA, plus I also tried to offer some advice to this user, having thoroughly beat this game on console I am fairly sure this can be done much better...I mean Banjo isn't even the fastest starting driver. I believe Krunch is. I could be wrong on that though...
Advice that came to me at the end of the TAS... All things considered I think that this run is improvable but I think you will find that there is not as much time to be saved as you think there is.

Run complete. Final time - 2:03:02.08 28359 rerecords. Edit: Oh yes, and thank you to all who posted with their comments and encouragements throughout this thread. This run would not have been completed without them.

How's the run coming along? I skipped a few WIPs so I could see the whole thing at once now. Gj so far (watched up to snow).
I recently completed darkmoon caverns non silver coin after a long break. I guess I just lost the motivation to run this game even though there are only seven tracks left now. I don't seem to have as much free time nowadays although I suppose if people really wanted to see this run completed soon I could make time for it. Here is the run up to date and here is a savestate at the start of the spaceland.

I made a video of getting 999 in the plane challenge as a concept video of what it is like to get super high scores. Video. I also managed to get 774 in the skate challenge but you cannot control the speed at which the game progresses so it is not nearly as interesting.

Perhaps the fireballs prevented him from flying like that in the second race? I haven't watched the whole WIP but so far it looks pretty good, I like the use of boosts in Boulder Canyon.
The two dragon races had near identical times. That's not to say they were both optimised but I thought I would do something different second time around. Sorry for the lack of progress but I will finish this... eventually. Only two tracks plus the ever so interesting credits this time. One of the tracks was Wizpig which I worked slightly harder on for good optimisation. State / Run

I have deprioritized this project in favour of other personal activities and as such, I have only done the first two races of Dragon World so far but nonetheless, I predict this will be finished in approximately three weeks from now. As of now I have completed 50 races with 23 to go. Here is up to the start of boulder canyon. You may notice that I only press A once during the whole of windmill plains. I found that mildly amusing.

sleep deprivation = eyes can play tricks on you. I'll have to watch later, but I could have sworn a dabble of sloppiness, especially in bumping into a lot of things. But overall pretty good.
Are you referring to the wall boosting? I use walls to change direction and give a small amount of speed

I noticed that you get slowed down each time you jump over the lake in Fossil Canyon. Check out this vid and see if you're able to copy his strat: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sh9H5UWqek Also I think your jump in Jungle Falls looks unoptimized, though I think I already told you that. Try to hit the opposite side of the lake closer to the wall on the right, and aim farther right during the jump, in order to go in a straighter line to the next zipper.
I tried the fossil canyon trick but to no avail. Banjo is too slow to make it. I find the best way to do the trick in the trophy race though. As for the jungle falls jump, I tried many ways to do it and that seemed to be the fastest. I have redone Taj's hover challenge with the A tapping trick to save a few seconds. I also did the first four tracks of the water world and the boss. Run. Also, here is a savestate at the start of boss 2-2. State. I think a video would take too long to encode although I am no expert in this field.
Do you need to go back and forth so much when you snake in the hovercraft? Can't you alternate between left and right each frame (to go in a straighter line)?
It's not faster to do that.

Edit: Btw does anyone have a save state with TT unlocked? I wanna play some DKR time trials (non-TAS), but I don't wanna have to spend so much time unlocking TT.
Here is a site with a .eep file of DKR with TT. I have now done up to the trophy challenge. Run / State

I finished the snow world trophy race and Taj's hover challenge. The trophy races are essentially the same but again the mini map is constantly displayed. I also redid the end of the second walrus race. Link.

Everything looks great. Any reason why you waited so long for that last boos in the second boss race?
yes, as with most racing games uphills slow you down. taking the uphill shortcut is a very steep hill, and the boost strip from the first race is not there, so it's better to save up two boosts for such a climb. will get to watching tonight, but of course I know I will like it. edit: I want a hovercraft like that for when I go sledding :P is the sidewinding faster? the CPU fighting in the icy room was real fast! some parts looked a teensy sloppy (explaining why it was done so fast), but nothing to redo over. Overall, it's looking way tighter than your first attempts, so this is a keeper. keep up the good work!
Agreed, I finally got a working ROM and there are some things that are fairly unexplainable to me, like why the prioritizing of bananas in some races but going for the silver coins first in others? And some minor route alterations when I feel the same route should be taken every lap assuming it is optimal. Also I suppose the sidewinding makes the hovercraft speed go a teensy bit over 60. Does the rapid-A technique accelerate hovercrafts even more? Also for the first few races (I know you're probably not going to redo at this point), if I recall correctly doesn't using the shield increase your speed a teensy bit? Other than that, you make this game look so easy. This game gave me nightmares (the good kind) when I was little. =) Keep it up!
The sidewinding which I call snaking is slightly faster than traveling in a straight line. Tapping A only works in the car. The mistakes from the run mainly arise from not switching saveslots so it is sometimes too late to go back and fix only minor errors. I don't go into the silver coin races with any planned route so I may collect things out of order. Coins are usually not out of the way so it seldom matters anyway.

Finished the rest of Dino Domain and did the car challenge. The races are essentially the same except the map is displayed instead of the speedometer all the time. This game is not hex edit friendly as I have recently discovered. Changing the map/speedometer at any point will cause a desync later and previous races cannot be substituted for the trophy races because of the way boosts work. I will probably not unlock the bird. Quick update. I did egg challenge although my kamikaze attempt at the end failed. I do the loopy thing because there is a time after when the eggs are dropped that they cannot be picked up. The CPUs lag me so I can't do the trick at the end of lap 2 of jungle falls as well as usual. Also, when is the finish point for this game? If it is at the space area I will need to do the trophy races which means 16 redundant races that will replicate what has already been shown. Link to run.

I changed my mind on the badger/banjo issue. I haven't been able to show that either is faster but I will go with banjo because I got a good JF time with him. I've done up to the end of AL but I'm not sure if I've used the best tactics in terms of balloon usage so I might have to redo. Does anyone know if using three blue balloons separately is faster than combining them? Here is the .m64 of the run so far.
