Writing most of it from scratch is probably a necessity anyway when you're going between such different hardware while both ends need to be written in assembly and emulation is impossible. You would think they would still have the source for one of the Sonic Advance games, but my guess is that they couldn't use it because it would be technically inadequate to handle the (ironically) more demanding Sonic 1.
I honestly wouldn't mind if this game had Sonic Advance graphics/engine - it would be better than the steaming hunk of fecal matter that he have now.
You are starting to remind me of some Angry Nintendo Nerd...

Spez's Mario64 run got me into TAS, and now that it has been improved so significantly, how can I say no? This deserves a STAR too!!! OMG, I have demanded for 2 stars already today LOL

Has anybody ever donated for PJ64 Beta 1.7? I heard that it is much more stable compared to the existing build... and the core of Mupen hasn't been updated for over a year now, whereas PJ64 1.7 will feature a brand new core with better compatibilities. Will there be any plans to make PJ64 the standard TAS emulator over Mupen when 1.7 is certified to be a better emulator (when I say emulator, I mean purely emulation rather than the tools)

I was initially skeptical on how this would work with a huge movie file, so I tried opening the largest movie file I could find on the site (ie erokky's FFVI which stands at a whopping 4+ hrs... the SMV was 1.7 mb :S). The outcome... the movie open amazingly quick for its size; only a delay of 1-2 seconds was noted, nothing too much to bother anyone I think. Scrolling up and down was also lagless, which is fantastic! Didn't expect the editor to handle large files like this so well! I'm running win98, and don't have any tools to check CPU/Mem usage of the editor with that SMV open, so maybe you might want to look at it to see if it's being as efficient on resources as you hope. On my side though, no detectable lag => good enough for me :) Right on Maximus! I can forsee this becoming a lazy TASer's (ie. me) best friend haha... You're extremely productive, don't think I will have to wait long for the next update. Looking forward to it EDIT: Ok, forgive me for being crazy... but you just might want to know this. I tried copying all of erokky's movie into the buffer (approx 880000 frame), which was fine, but when trying to view it, the editor slowed to a halt. Hmmm, correct me if I am wrong, but the whole movie file is copied to the memory or a buffer as it is loaded am I right (I am guessing since I can delete the movie file without a access violation error...)? It just came across as weird since the main screen managed to handle the whole movie from it's buffer quite well, but the copy buffer doesn't seem to be as efficient and basically forces me to kill the application manually. Just tried doing 180000, which works since the copy buffer showed after 10 seconds wait. But scrolling down the copy buffer is extremely laggy... sort of what I would have expected for the main edit but it didn't actually happen there

SWEET! That screen shot makes me drool... now I feel driven to start another project going, if only I can find a nice game :) EDIT: Ok, this may be useful now that there is a modify multiple frames option... 1) Undo button, since it sucks if you somehow stupidly overwritten some of the existing wanted inputs when trying to modify multiple frames 2) Insert input into every other frame button... useful for adding autofire inputs 3) Is there anyway to modify multiple frames of say player 2 only leaving player 1 input unmodified AND/OR a duplicate player 1 input to player 2 AND/OR copy and paste over player 1 input without screwing player 2 input up. This can aid editing of 2 player movies. Of these, I would presume (2) being the easiest to implement, (1) shouldn't be too hard I hope (not that I know a lot about coding)... and (3) is potentially the hardest which may require even some UI overhaul to accomplish eg. being able to highlight only player 1 input without player 2's input and vice versa. Still these are merely some new stuff you could implement to make this a more all-encompassing TAS movie editing tool. Hope you found this feedback useful.

o.0 hard mode is not fit for human players... how can it even be beaten with so many enemies around :S Hitbox detection in this game is laughable; going through enemies without taking damage ftw! The AI in this game got me laughing too... their primitive brains sure suit the theme of this game, especially those fishes in stage 3 haha. My only complain is that in certain places you waste your shots unnecessarily (especially against bosses). But the improvement is still very significant. Definite yes vote from me...

IT WORKS!!! Guys, try it out... though you may need quite a number of resets to nail it. Weird problem, ought to bring it up in the Mupen thread EDIT: Bleh, it still desyncs few minutes in... what the hell, I'll wait for the AVI

I'm wondering is what would you possibly want to do with a movie file in an editor?
I would like a function where 2 different movie files could be opened, and you could copy chunks from one movie and insert it into the other. This would make splicing much easier, since you could work on a separate file without touching your master copy (after all, if this tool was intended to be a replacement to hex editing movies, might as well have this function). I guess with the GUI constrains, it doesn't have to be open 2 movies simultaneously or the screen would just blowup; instead it can be like open first movie, highlight frames to copy, then open the second, and choose where to insert into. That would be cool...

if this site proposes a 600+ MB file, I don't see how this could be a problem to propose the quad run as well.
I'm not sure if I like the idea of torrents hosting the download; at least for me, BT screws my network. And anyway, I am not too sure how many seeds would actually be available long enough as the submission gets much bigger... I just took a look at the current host for the latest WIP, and I realised it boasts unlimited upload file size. Perhaps the hosting problem isn't as bad as I had expected... As an alternative, I personally like the idea of streaming videos, perhaps .FLVs hosted preferably somewhere private rather than on youtube etc, in case some losers go around stealing the content and bragging about their own (in)abilities. This would cut down on downloading time of each subsequent WIP.

I am not sure if it's normal... persisted for over 30000 frames... It's ok, this will probably get published anyway, I'll just wait for the AVI :)

I'm impressed that you could improve the old movie by such an extent.
I am kind of surprised myself. I started the run initially because I felt that there were actually shortcuts that could be employed to kill Mogoria (ie using Roadkill to zap her) so I had estimated an improvement of maybe 20 seconds max. But then I realised that as I progressed, I started discovering oddball glitches that allowed me to save up to 3 minutes! In a way, due to the innovative gameplay, the game engine can be abused quite badly... I wouldn't be surprised if some crazier glitches are discovered. I ever managed to get Sketch bumped out of the screen border and fall off the page, though I doubt that could be used as a shortcut to drop all the way to the end of the level... If it could, the run could potentially be cut to 2-3 minutes even!

I will go take a look at this now... been loking forward to it for quite a while. Mukki: Btw, you might want to relook the formatting on your submission text. If you wanted to bold text, you gotta use double underscores before and after the text. Not sure if the single underscored parts were intended... EDIT: I can't seem to playback the movie properly... although opening the rom in Mupen is fine, when I try to play the movie file, the screen remains black and a weird "ding" sound keeps looping in the background. I'm not sure what it is, but I've made sure my plugins were those you used

Just curious... would each subsequent WIP AVIs be the complete thing, up just the new updated portions? I could imagine the AVIs becoming huge as more stages are completed... Hosting would also become a problem wouldn't it?

Nice... a new version is out :) Hmmm, just wondering if any editors could update the Downloads page to list this editor there? Also if you could, update highness' Gen's Movie editor link... there new url can be found at this thread. I am not sure if it still works with the newer GMVs though... and I still can't seem to get it to open any GMVs even if they were made even 1-2 years ago.

It looks neat if you've never seen it done before, but it's really exactly as simple as it looks, which is very. Get a plastic cup and some dice and try it yourself.
It doesn't look easy to me... so I guess it's pretty hard to pull off eh? I've got to say this guy has got a lot of skill; usually the longer the distance you drag the dice over the table, the easier it is to get them to stack. But this guy manages to line them up on a rubic cube, which was o.0

Oh yes... I forgot to thank you too Maximus... you're splicer saved my run so many times when lose frames suddenly went missing for no apparent reason. :)

HAHA, YES VOTE! It is hilarious the way you toyed with the AI and made them look stupid... this ought to be merged with the off topic video game stupidity thread! This sets the bar for all new fighting games TASes... who ever said they had to perfect each round? Question: the audio seems to desync from the visuals... is it the game or my SNES9x? I am sure sync audio option is checked...

Manga_Maniac: you may want to use dehack's microstorage in case the link goes dead when someone in future decided to revisit this thread. EDIT: I just realised the link was made in 2005... it's long dead. Oh well...

Incredible run! Question: isn't it possible to avoid the tournament fights by releasing roadkill so he finds an exit? i've read this somewhere.
I doubt so, it's probably some rumour. So far the only place I know where Roadkill can uncover an arrow is in stage 3-1... I know it's weird that there is only 1 instance, but hey, in a way I thought this game looked incomplete and shoddy so maybe there were more to be implemented but the game production was cut short?!? Anyway, I tried releasing Roadkill but he couldn't find anything in the screen. Thanks for all the compliments, this run was a bitch to do, since there are just too many random factors. I had to redo stages 2-1 to 3-2 twice, since trying in any way to splice the movie desyncs almost immediately. In game luck for me sucked to the core, which made some scenes ugly; I was very lucky for most of the run in reality, since I discovered many weird unintended glitches etc. I guess that makes the run interesting, since almost every different screen has its own unique solution. I hope for the viewer, repetition is cut to the minimum :)

I have finished stages 2-1 and 2-2, and I am 6518 frames (~109 sec) ahead of the current run :) which obviously means that stages 2-1 and 2-2 were quite nicely done. I know that stage 2-1 looked bad at the arena (when I was dealing with the Mongoria, which I admit was a mistake, but I guess it turned out to be a blessing in disguise since the randomness translated into some lucky manipulations afterwards, ie the page tearing in the first hit on the last cel. That saved time for that cel and made it look more interesting since most of the creeps were killed by the projectile. The final kill looks also bad, but it was necessary since turning around for the kill was slower. 2-2 was less eventful which was a good thing. The well was the first real instance in the game where I abused damage invulnerability, which got me so fast ahead of the game a decided to do some can-cans :P Managed to get the paper aeroplane to hit Kung-Fung 3 times, and including the additional damage from his nails, I managed to clear him pretty fast. Oddly, staying near the side of the cel got him to shoot less fireball thingies, which reiterates the random nature of this game... which sucks big time when things don't work out This ZIP contains: - existing run up to stage 2-2 - a desync save which clears the arena screen about 1 second earlier but lags in the last cel - a save state at frame 17000 before the 2 runs branch.

Just curious, would it be possible to add a 'movie preview' function? For example, after playing maybe 100 frames, I can set the movie to play back the last 100 frames in real time so I can see how it looks? This would be nice together with input splice... I can't seem to find a way to bind a hotkey for frame seek... any chance to allow us to predefine our own hotkey for it too?
