Resync [1275] PSX Castlevania: Symphony of the Night "Richter mode" by pirate_sephiroth in 05:41.73 with latest psxjin, 99% of the input is essentially carbon copy.

Summary

Comments

This movie quite demonstrate the timing can actually be pretty much identic between pcsx and psxjin, the time difference is due to extra "fake" lag that wasnt in pcsx-rr originally, it doesnt create a lot of difference by itself, the other difference is the rng seed is affected, so on bosses some time is lost.
It wasnt very complex to hex and resync the movie, thx to text movie format. Took only a few hours of work, there was probably less than 30 desync in total.
Upgrading the run to a newer version of psxjin later sound pretty easy.
As for why theres no improvement, im not aware of any possible ones, given the very small ammount of touching on the input im safe to say its at least as good as old one, aside from rng seed of course.
All credits goes to pirate_sephiroth, i doubt his run is any improvable, unless there would be a sort of new glitch.

As for those asking why submit or do this, and why not after all ? if the problem is my name in the submision, idc to just leave pirate credits, i dont see why we should abstain ourself to have a _nearly_ identical run but on a better emu.
If someone feel manly enought he can beat it, at least will start from a run with a more decent emu.

Mukki: Judging...
Mukki: This is a difficult decision. The main benefit of accepting updates would be more accurate runs. However, the key word here is more accurate as the limitations of emulators are well known. Updating, therefore, should be a matter of degree. It would be worthwhile where the differences in emulation are considerable, in this case the difference is only a few seconds. There is a potential downside to accepting updates: firstly, as in this case, they can be submitted by someone other than the original author, thus taking control of the work out of the author's hands; secondly, and similarly, it could result in users updating popular runs in order to one-up others and join in the glory of a particular run; finally, as said in the thread, I see no point in compelling our encoders to re-encode movies with no material difference. Also, Circus Charlie was mentioned as precedent for updates. I don't think the circumstances are quite comparable. In Famtasia we had an unsatisfactory emulator of hellish proportions. PCSX sucks, but it is not quite in the same league. As stated in the Famtasia obsoletion discussion the purpose of striking-off these runs was due to the representation of TAS quality very early on, rather than a compulsion to have slightly better timing. Therefore, I do not feel bound by it. For lack of a compelling reason to accept this update I am rejecting this submission for not improving the currently published run.

Updating an existing movie for better emulation accuracy? People should do that more often.

How inaccurate is PCSX, though, really? I'm not sure I see the point with this. The main comparison I can make is to adelikat's movie of Eggerland, which was more accurately emulated than the Famtasia run by Bag of Magic Food. However, by that point, Famtasia was obsolete. In this case, PCSX isn't obsolete yet. I'm not necessarily saying I'm against this movie yet, but I'd like a little more explanation as to why this change was made.
Used to be a frequent submissions commenter. My new computer has had some issues running emulators, so I've been here more sporadically. Still haven't gotten around to actually TASing yet... I was going to improve Kid Dracula for GB. It seems I was beaten to it, though, with a recent awesome run by Hetfield90 and StarvinStruthers. (http://tasvideos.org/2928M.html.) Thanks to goofydylan8 for running Gargoyle's Quest 2 because I mentioned the game! (http://tasvideos.org/2001M.html) Thanks to feos and MESHUGGAH for taking up runs of Duck Tales 2 because of my old signature! Thanks also to Samsara for finishing a Treasure Master run. From the submission comments:
Shoutouts and thanks to mklip2001 for arguably being the nicest and most supportive person on the forums.

I don't get the point of submitting this - I'd prefer there be actual improvements found, as opposed to submitting a near-identical run. I'll also point out that the time stated here is longer than the old run. Where did the extra delays come from?

Also note that he did improve the famtasia movie, it is just the lag that killed his time, iirc. The only accuracy increase between PCSX-rr and PSXjin was the SPU. The CPU and GPU were left relatively untouched. If the sound has no discernible difference, then there isn't much need to update. Also, Grunt, the SPU is very important for timing, and causes timing differences, so that would lead to a longer time. As much as I dislike the turd that is PCSX-rr, I have to say I don't see the point in a non-improved update.

I have no gripes with this movie, but please do note that when adelikat did the exact same thing with Circus Charlie, he did not list himself as a coauthor. Edit: Apparently arukAdo made a note on this in the submission text simultaneously with my post.

Does this will last forever like that? /debate By removing lag theres a chance to "catch" back the right rng seed and get identical time, i think. Also, its important to understand the process to make this movie was simple, boring for sure, but simple, upgrading to a futur psxjin will be even more easier. Thats to say, i realy dont mind if this get rejected since i havent wasted my life on it, but i dont get whats so wrong with it, and that would be a pretty assy precedent to set imo. "your not allowed to migrate good movies to newer version of emus" i dont see the point either of such a rule, and all players points will go to the original author anyway. i dont see hordes of people claiming for improvements or whilling to tas it, its been made with pcsx 0.5 i think, its 2 years old almost now (few days away from the pub date), realy i dont see whats so wrong.

Doesn't it mean that the emulation is more accurate as well? Isn't this site about movies being accurate with the real thing as possible? No "cheating" or using emulator specific bugs, like the old SML2 pipe bug. Not to start a fight here, but I feel that this is a case where an emulation flaw has been discovered. No matter if it's a second or two slower, it still means that it's the actual time to aim for and the old time was (more)incorrect when comparing with a real game. I'm all for accuracy and fixes like these. Not that every game absolutely must be de-published since it runs on inaccurate code, but more like updating those that people are willing to update. I might be wrong about the accuracy, but I see really little reason to do this otherwise (like porting an fceu movie to famtasia).

Ive been doing some tests today, at first i thought the bosses were improvable, but i havent been able to pull more than 5 frames on medusa, so i was wrong apparently, the extra damage from all crits in the original movie is actually very marginal, for sure it doesnt compensate 2 seconds. It would appear that the biggest time loose is within 2 extra jumps im doing, 1 in normal chapel and 1 in the reverse, it is due to misalignement with subpixel, well i havent found a better explanation at least since the original input was getting me just a pixel away from where i should end up. I will assume that the whole time difference is simply the accumalation of all lags that delay 1 or 2 frames across the run and the extra jumps.

Since there was no mention of this, I'll mention it now. There are sound issues (though slightly) with PCSX and SotN. This was fixed in PSXJin. I'm not sure if you knew about this, Mukki, when you made your decision.
