Labyrinth (魔王の迷宮) is an adventure game released in 1987 for the Famicom, based on the Jim Henson movie of the same name. The game features a series of mazes that the player navigates to find parts of a key in order to rescue her baby brother from the Goblin King.

Game objectives: Rescue Toby

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 2.3.2
  • Aims for fastest possible completion

Comments

I recently discovered that it's possible to clip through 1-tile walls, which saves time in particular stages.

Stage by stage comments

Area 0: Goblin gate

Movement is deliberately manipulated in order to spawn the worm close to the door.

Area 1: Brick road

Several walls are clipped through to save time.

Area 2: Hedge garden

Nothing particularly interesting.

Area 3: Depression forest

Clipping through hedges to save time.

Area 4: Stench bog

More clipping to save time.

Area 5: Pavement puzzle

Nothing particularly interesting.

Area 6: Forest of laughter

Nothing particularly interesting.

Area 7: Evil garden

Nothing particularly interesting.

Area 8: Ballroom

The Goblin King shows up and continually drains time. Shooting him recovers some time. I shoot him to keep my time high enough so that the next Wiseman visit won't slow the run down with a prompt to buy time.

Area 9: Terror maze

A couple of walls are temporarily clipped into to avoid the enemies.

Area 10: Bewilderment forest

Ordinarily, you scroll the trees off-screen in this stage to re-arrange them until you find a gap. But for the TAS, it's faster to just clip through the 1-tile arrangements instead.

Area 11: Junk city

Nothing particularly interesting.

Area 12: Goblin city

Nothing particularly interesting.

Area 13: Castle

Clipping here to walk straight over to Jareth's stone, the final piece of the key.

Area 13: Castle part 2

More clipping to get to Toby as fast as possible.

slamo: Optimization seems good to me, good work finding that clipping trick. I can also appreciate the luck manipulation that went into this.
As far as entertainment goes, the feedback was pretty lukewarm. The gameplay is a lot of walking in straight lines around enemies, which gets very repetitive. That being said, accepting to Vault.
