Submission Text Full Submission Page
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! is a boxing game from 1987, which stars Little Mac and Doc Louis. The clock stop glitch (or CS for short) is a glitch that allows you to stop the clock by throwing a rapid punch. It is a very interesting glitch, and although it only impacts a small number of fighters, it is still a good glitch to try out. Here are the times:
  • Glass Joe: 42.00
  • Von Kaiser: 35.61
  • Piston Honda (CS TAS V1: 40.82, V2&3: 40.25, V4: 36.97)
  • Don Flamenco 1: 11.97 CS, 14.97 no CS
  • King Hippo: 37.61
  • Great Tiger: 47.48
  • Bald Bull 1 (CS TAS V1, 2 and 3: 57.82, v4: 53.82; not-CS: 55.25)
Bald Bull 1 has seen quite a few changes since the last CS TAS, and this one adds a few jabs here and there to lower the time. See the published TAS's submission comments for more information.
  • Piston Honda 2: 39.97
  • Soda Popinski 31.48 (was 31.82)
Soda Popinski's misdirection gutters saved a few frames. There are five of them, and each has a 25% chance of success. They do not require tool-assistance.
  • Bald Bull 2: 1:08.82
  • Don Flamenco 2: 44.48 CS, 58.00 no CS
  • Mr. Sandman: 2:16.48
  • Super Macho Man: 35.82
  • Mike Tyson: 1:58.xx
I have the same things to say that Adelikat said in his previous CS TAS's comments: "The clock stopping glitch involves delivering a rapid punch to the opponent then doing a delayed jab that will glitch the clock into remaining stopped. It will not restart again unless Mac delivers a stunned punch or uppercut (or either Mac or the opponent get knocked down). Not all opponent punches can be countered with rapid punches so the logic here is to get the opponent to throw such a punch as soon as possible. This leads to some very counter intuitive strategies. For instance, on both Soda & Don II, I have to get knocked down twice. In fact, in each case Mac is one punch away from losing the fight.
The clock stopping glitch makes a real time trade off of about 1 minute because once the clock is stopped, uppercuts can not be used which lengthens the fights (as well as being knocked down). However, real time is not the primary goal in this movie nor the no glitch version. And the no glitch version makes a number of real time tradeoffs. Sandman, Piston II, Piston I, and Don II could all be beaten faster if aiming for real time. Also, both take advantage of clock stopping. The clock stops momentarily during rapid punches, stunned punches, and uppercuts. Maximizing the time that the clock is stopped is a standard feature of most fast Punch-Out Strats.
This version shows off a nice glitch and some surprising strategies and so I propose that this movie be published along side the glitchless version."
Enjoy!

feos: Judging...

DJ Incendration: I didn't realize that it the glitch would be bad for all future submissions; I thought it wasn't good enough for the current one. Reading the discussion forums helped me decide to cancel this run.
DJ Incendration: Uncanceling this because one person wants to see a run of this branch published, and one wants me to uncancel it and see where it goes.
Edit: Recanceling this due to a new and improved submission.

Submission to compare against: #2956: adelikat's NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! "clock stopping glitch" in 19:17.96 (Which was made to be alongside this movie here) And since I mentioned alongside movies, here's what this one's alongside for the quick reference: [2488] NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! by McHazard in 17:39.46 Nach left a judgement note behind as well on that submission:

This glitch does not seem special enough to warrant a separate run. If the glitch changed much of the run it might, but as it is now, it does not. Rejecting.

This submission improves several fights, and I'll make a glitchless version with the improved Bald Bull soon. I still think this glitch is a good side branch.

You are missing the point. It has already been decided that THE GLITCH IS NOT REASON ENOUGH TO WARRANT A NEW BRANCH. Spike clearly showed that, and you somehow completely glossed over that fact. Just because you THINK it could be acceptable doesn’t mean anything.

For the record, I like the the clock stopping glitch branch(no surprise since I've made 2 submissions for it). DJ Incendration, I don't understand why it would be "bad" for future submissions. It is just a different branch. It will probably be rejected, but I say leave it uncancelled and make someone reject it :)

I agree with adelikat: leave that for the judges to decide. Nach had that opinion in 2010, somebody might have a different one in 2020. We don't really have a precedent right system where every executive decision made in the past holds true forever. It's much better not to discourage people from pushing the categories they like, even if they don't pass the judgment on entertainment or variety merits. Who knows, some day they might.

I cannot agree here. The decision made back then is very likely to happen now. Granted you’re right I’m not a judge, but to me this category is not as noticeably different to the other publication. I voted no.

Personally I'd like to see this as a published category (but I'd also like to see it not done on FCEUX.)

lucky for you, I just synced it to BizHawk 2.4.1 (I only had to remove one frame) http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/63210929574136733

That's cool, I thought that didn't work for punch out, I must be mis-remembering. Maybe it's worth a console test too, would be cool to see a console verified punch out run. EDIT: oh cool it's uncancelled, giving this a yes vote, I like the glitch and the different strategies.

As with the other submission. McHazard's input is used as a base with additional input made for the clock stop made by DJ.

Wouldn't it be alongside #6740: DJ_Incendration & McHazard's NES Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! in 17:39.19?

I wrote that before that submission's existence.

Submission has been bested. To keep it short, since it's 4 major points for the glitch. And only one bit supports it. Super Macho Man: 35.82 -> 34.82 As well as the same/similar lost time as with your other submission.
