So this is a Rockman Zero 4 TimeAttack, the newest series of megaman by Capcom adapted on GBA... It mixes all the ingredients of many other megaman games:
  • 8 Bosses
  • A bad and mean Vilain (Dr. Weil)
  • EX-Skills which are gained from bosses
  • Parts improvement
  • 8 Bosses you have to fight again in the last level... and so on
Only one is missing : MEGAMAN??!!
Yes, you play, ZERO in this game with his Z-Saber and you help Ms.Ciel, who hopes for a better world with no war...gnagnagna...
I used VBA 1.7.2, but the rerecording-10 version (the one which is compulsory for this site)
I played the game at 15% of the real speed in order to improve my moves for this TimeAttack... I used no shortcut keys (for diagonals for example), and I play the japanese version of the game since the US or EU version are not out yet.
The sound is 44kHz and no filters were applied...
I do not use warp (there isn't any to knowledge) nor passwords, nor cheats... (anyway there is no passwd for this game)
Here is a list of the hints I use :
  • I don't know very much about programming errors in this game, i use a bug in Pulpula Cockapetri stage in which you can do a dash jump without touching the ground right after you went through a gate to acces the first "conveyors handles" room...
  • Also when you dash you can jump a very short time in the void before falling, i use it twice or thrice in the stage...
  • Moreover at very low speed you're able to hit up to four (end even five) times when you do a jumping saber slash bit turning very rapidly to the opposite direction and then turning back to the original one... I use it all along the game to kill enemies.
  • However, it is possible to kill an enemy in one hit by using the very end of the jumping saber slash which would logically take two hits to kill, as it seems to deal double damage... I use it sometimes in the game mostly against the flamethrower enemy...
  • It appears that jumping to kill enemies is faster than dash-slashing them, so I (almost) always jump to kill them...except when you will from a ledge a the end of your dash...
  • Using the flameshooter in Fengli Lunaedge stage at the beginning when you stick the wall allows you to take the lower part which is faster than the higher route and which is usually block by snow...
I think that it sums up quite well the hints I use to do this...
Here comes the goals of this TimeAttack :
  • Completed in 37min 20sec (game calculated... see the very end of the movie)
  • I played the game through hard mode (you cannot use the three saber slashes, nor charge your weapons, and the weather is always set to normal conditions which are the hardest ones and cannot be changed)
  • I take NO hits (not a single one)...it's more professionnal ;)
  • I DO NOT die... nor do I restart...
  • This is an (almost) Z-Saber only Run, what I mean is that I only use this weapon to defeat enemy as well as bosses... I do not deal damage with the Z-Knuckle, however i use it in some cases to make the game more interesting, i shall list afterwards the times I used it...
  • I use no cyber-elves (of course)
  • I use no recipe to upgrade ZERO's parts (of course as well)
  • All missions cleared at 100% (with S-rank of course)
  • All (except two) levels cleared in less than 2min.
  • I aim for fastest time this way...
Here are the times i used the Z-knuckle :
  • To power down the very first boss
  • To pull out Tech Kraken out of his Yami (in which he is invicible)
  • To kill a flameshhoter enemy at the beginning of the stage to take the fastest route
  • To kill the waterthrower enemy in the first intermission to complete it at 100%
  • To pull out the plug in Pulpula Cockapetri stage
  • To power down the four generators in Randon Bandom stage
So I only kill two enemies with the Z-Knuckle...
To sum-up, i think that you will like this movie because it's a "good" game (in my opinion) but it's mostly a megaman game, the legendary hero (even if he does nor appear in this one), so it's pretty popular... And When I watched it I thought that it was pretty nice to watch and quite speedy...
So I hope you'll enjoy it everyone, even if it's not perfect :)

Same. This happened with the last run I tried to watch too. Since it relies on a battery save with a clear game, and therefore can't get into hard mode.
I like my "thank you"s in monetary form.

Hi does not desync here - at least not withing the first 10 minutes of the movies (as this is as far as I've watched so far). Seems very well played to me. I like how Zero does take no hits, though this may be inefficient speed-wise. /me runs off to watch the rest now... Philip

As Nrg said, the problem lies in the fact that Hard Mode is an unlockable. And I've never beaten Zero 4, thusly rendering me incapable of watching the movie. If someone would throw a save file with Hard Mode unlocked up somewheres...

Bouhouhou... For my first movie... it will certainly be rejected as they do not seem to accept SRAM movie... Anyway for those who want to watch though, add this to your folder and it should work (logically), then tell me what you think ;) http://rockman.hosthelpers.net/rmz4_hard_sram.zip

Anyway for those who can watch it (those who have already finished the game once) tell me your opinion, so that I will improve my next movies ;)

I voted no, I haven't seen the whole run but there are some obvious mistakes that really stick out. Overall, this is MUCH better than Iriasu's attempt. First the whole hard mode thing. I don't think hard mode is a good idea and not because it breaks the rules. It simply makes everything slower, no EX skills against the bosses and no combo attacks makes boss battles slower and less attractive to the casual viewer. About ranks, a TAS shouldn't care about ranks. Ranks are a sign of skill when someone plays through the game unassisted and a TAS is not about skill (well, not the skill of playing through the game), they are about perfection. Perfection in the case of this game is speeding through the game while killing everything in you parth IMO. Don't go out of your way to kill enemies, it simply looks unnecessary. If you want to show off S-rank skills, then do an unassisted speedrun. Overall your dash timing seemed really good for someone who doesn't use frame advance. You let go of dash only for a frame, I don't know if you held dash for as long as possible though. Falling acceleration still applies to the Zero series. Jump so when you need to fall, you will already be falling at max speed rather than simply falling off and waiting to accelerate. If you don't understand what I'm saying I'm sure there is someone else who can explain this concept to you. The most blatant example of lack of falling acceleration is during Tech Kraken's stage. I noticed when climbing you used non-dashing jumps, which is fine until you reach the very top. You should use a dashing jump once you climb up on top of the wall so you can move faster horizontally. A few individual stage notes: First stage: You should collect one of those exploding boxes with the Z-knuckle. They help you kill the boss faster. Nice job using a jumping turnaround slash against the purple robots. It looks smooth. However, it does cost a tiny bit of time to pull off the jumping turnaround slash and you might have been able to dodge a few more purple robots. Second stage: Are you sure taking the lift is faster? I'm pretty sure climbing up the wall while slashing those wall turrets is faster. The final pit of spikes right before the boss can be jumped over without touching a wall on either side. The positioning is precise, but I have done this without slowdown so it shouldn't be hard in a TAS. I'll comment more later.

Thanks for all mikwuyma, your advice are pretty good and I will take those to improve the next one... ;) So you think that i shouldn't take care of the rank...right as it is a TAS I won't nex time, but i thought it was more professionnal (i'm not used to TAS), as well as for the bomb thing in the first stage as I didn't want to use the Z-Knuckle to inflict damage... And the last thing is that if I do not grab the wall before the last spike floor in the second stage I get hit by the enemy shot... that's all... I'm longing for your advice... The next one will be in normal mode... but I hesitate, i want to do it also on Rockman ZERO 2... so I don't know yet... Thx ;)

Umm... you can retire in most missions. So if you're not aiming for a rank then it would be far faster to enter every mission, retire, until the end. And that would make a boring game. S-Rank is the only logical way.

I think he means while still completing the game normally Omni, just not aim for S rank and go for speed

You can still complete the game normally. You just get F-ranked.

Omni, what you mentioned only works in Zero 1. You aren't allowed to exit a stage until you beat it in the later Zero games. Your logic only applies to Zero 1.

If there is a English version movie in the future, that'll be more widely accepted.

I don't think that the language is important for a movie... as most of the time you don't have enough time to read.... And i think that you don't watch TimeAttack to understand the story of a movie ;) However, were u able to watch it ramon, and what did u think about it??

Watched the entire thing. First, again, i would like to point towards Mike's critique. Especially about the ranking stuff, a TA video should just go for as fast as possible. Second, i will list mine. There's some from the former submission review i did, looks like you didn't do any research at all.. Anyway, here's some my critique: - You don't seem to understand that the axe (knuckle weapon) rapes all in hardmode. Although your saber left-right-left-etc thingy is much faster, the axe does way more damage on the boss than the z-saber, so they die faster. Always use an axe against a boss if possible, even the final boss. - in the first 'final-level' where you have to clear the eastern, northern, western, and southern parts; at the south section (i believe) you have to wait for the bombs to come in so you can blow up the boxes and go down. Earlier in the level, you can get a drill fom a certain enemy. (i don't remember where) You can then use the drill to drill your way down instead of waiting for the bombs. - at some boss fights, the bosses weren't flickering all the time, or as much as possible, even at some points it would be possible to hit the boss sooner. - i also think (if possible) the bosses should be manipulated into never going off-screen. Like pegasus should never go off-screen so you are able to hit him as much as possible. And like kraft, he should go into his 'cloud' where you have to pull him out. i'm not sure if it's possible, but i think it should be researched. It's good to see a more serious run for Z4 this time around, but it still has too many flaws. Vote: no.

I personally enjoy the Zero games ran at an S level. To me it's far more entertaining. Of course, though, a true speedrun is also entertaining but a TAS doesn't need to focus on speed. Look at saturns secret of evermore 100% run for example. I voted no only because it was a hard mode video and thus I could not watch it. If you do decide to make a video of this again I suggest you strive for S rank (at 100 points) again. Or even better do both a S run and a speed run. Also don't limit yourself to a certain weapon like you tried to do.

Good, some more advice... i didn't know for the drill thing in the first final stage... Thx for that McBain i'm working on a new one thx to Mike Uyama's advice, so this time it'll be in normal mode ans it'll be a real TA (S-rank... too bad!!)...

Perhaps someone can't replay it correctly, but I can run it and it runs well! Though some adjustments or improvements might be in need of, still I vote yes for it.

When it comes to "calculated time", then yes, it certainly does beat my last movie by about 4 minutes, but... besides the hints given by McBAIN and Uyama, there are other things you missed that I need to point out. MAIN POINT TO CONSIDER IN HARD MODE: - The Z-Knuckle CAN be charged up in Hard Mode, yet, you were unaware of that function and didn't use it against the bosses. Charge it up WHILE you're damaging a boss or using the Saber, and the moment the boss is about to stop flickering, you should have a full-charged Z-Knuckle attack ready. Use it to deal tons of damage, and keep charge it up, use Z saber in-between, and repeat the process. And other points to consider: - Pick up the Burst Bomb from one of those Yellow Crates in the Intro Stage and use them at SubDesert Core (Intro Stage Boss) to deal tons of damage, while also unplugging the boss and attack with Z-Knuckle afterwards. - Tech Kraken's stage, you choose a very good route through the "labyrinth". When I did my run, I only did it from mind and not from a sheet, so that's why my route wasn't so efficient, but I did kill more enemies this way, even though it was truly unneccessary to do so. Moving on, after killing the midboss Spy Rarrier (Larrier?) I, you seem to stand still infront of the RB Cannons, waiting for them to be vulnerable. I think that (although not tested yet), you can jump over them right at the tip of the edge they're standing on, gaining a couple of frames this way. - Heat Gemblem's stage, you don't need to kill the very first Gan Ga Gahn (drill enemy) seen after you jump down one floor at the beginning of the stage. Just skip it. When Gemblem uses his fire wave attack and you stood infront of him, you could've used the charged up Z Knuckle on him inbetween your saber attacks. - Fenrir Lunaedge's stage, on the elevator with spikes on the sides when going up, there's no need to attack the Valiant Fire's on the left side of each floor. Just ignore them, since you're killing some Metools during your trip to Lunaedge, and they count as kill score as well. - Sol Titanian's stage, on the first area, before continuing the stage indoors, you seemed to take a different route than supposed. It's better to just stick to the right side route at all cost, since it saves a few frames. And also, since you didn't seem to bother bringing a Lamp Shield (from Lamproid X enemies, fire-type) with you, why not bring a Mega Axe (from Axeroid enemy) with you, like McBAIN suggested. It works efficiently against pretty much everything on that stage. But I did like the nifty "helicopter-ride" you pulled in the second area with those Sandozers. - Mino Magnaxe's stage, you forgot the Mega Axe deal again. Bring at least one axe with you, even though you think that swiping weapons from enemies wastes frames. In the end, you'll gain frames instead. - Purpura Cockapetri's stage, you were right about using the lower path, since it's faster. - The other stages were almost flawless. - And unless you were informed of things here, when you record a TA movie, you CAN skip the ending and credits entirely. And you should stop recording your movie the moment you make the last hit against the last boss, since people can actually take time to see the ending themselves, and you save more frames on your movie this way too. Endings are only supposed to be recorded on AVIs, unless Bisqwit or anyone else has a word about this matter. Overall, that's a great overall time you got there, but for people to be able to view your movies from now on, and for more efficient play, make sure to record from "power-on", thus forcing you to play Normal Mode rather than Hard Mode. ^_^

Thx Iriasu for your advice... Though I were aware of most of the things you told about the Z-Knuckle... It's just that i didn't want to use the Z-Knuckle to do an almost Z-Saber only run... But i guess that i did not get the spirit of TAs this time... Now that i've been informed of all that i will do another one without thinking of getting S-Rank missions... I'm already working on it :) :) :) ;) Be sure to check it when it'll be out... Thx a lot again!
